A bustling and vibrant street in Kyoto.
Mu Chenshuang sat quietly alone in the carriage on her way back to the Marquis's residence. Thinking of Feng Ji's words, that Mu Chunxi loved Fu Junheng but could not have him, she kicked away the seemingly innocent oil-paper umbrella standing beside her legs in anger.
"It's all your fault for having so many romantic entanglements. You've made me the target of so much envy and hatred. And now look what's happened—you're gone, leaving me all alone!"
All along, Mu Chenshuang had forcibly suppressed her feelings of loss and sadness over Fu Junheng's departure.
But she knew that whenever she thought of Fu Junheng, the longing in her heart was not only tingling but also a little painful. Perhaps some small resentment had also grown in her heart, which she took the opportunity to vent.
Mu Chenshuang muttered a few words in a rare coquettish tone, and her anger subsided a little as she looked at the overturned oil-paper umbrella.
She suppressed the emotions in her eyes, instantly reverting to her usual calm, composed, and indifferent expression.
She stretched out her slender, white fingers, picked up the oil-paper umbrella that Feng Ji had given her, and set it aside.
Mu Chenshuang knew very well that now was not the time for her to be coy and indulge in romance; she had more important things to deal with.
Perhaps because it was a sign of impending rain, Mu Chenshuang felt the air inside the carriage, with all the curtains drawn, was somewhat oppressive, so she raised her hand and lifted the curtain.
As the carriage passed a street corner, Mu Chenshuang, with her exceptional hearing, twitched her ear and caught all the conversations of the people on the street.
"Have you heard? A few days ago, all the officials in those big houses over there were arrested. They were arrested overnight. I heard from people who know about it that there were screams and howls, it was terrifying."
"Oh my, is this for real? It's been a long time since something like this has happened in Kyoto. I hope this will cause panic again."
"Indeed, the last time something this disturbing on such a large scale happened was almost ten years ago, wasn't it?"
As everyone chatted amongst themselves, Mu Chenshuang, sitting in the carriage, couldn't help but frown slightly, her heart filled with sorrow.
Some of the gathered people had the same thought as Mu Chenshuang.
"Ten years ago? The most shocking thing that happened nationwide wasn't the Libei King's family..."
Before he could finish speaking, a middle-aged man next to him quickly pulled him by the shoulder, covered his mouth, and warned him with his eyes, "Are you out of your mind! How dare you talk about this!"
The man who had spoken realized what was happening and looked belatedly terrified. Everyone around him lowered their heads in unison, pretending not to have heard.
With another potentially fatal incident looming in Kyoto, no one wanted to get themselves into trouble.
The group, who had been gathered together discussing the matter, stopped talking after this little incident and all turned around and went home.
One or two people, perhaps embarrassed, smiled awkwardly, as if trying to find a reasonable excuse for leaving. "It looks like it's going to rain heavily right now. Let's go, let's all hurry back."
Upon hearing this, Mu Chenshuang looked up at the sky and saw that the dark clouds on the horizon were indeed pressing down even lower, indicating that it would probably start to rain in less than an hour.
Mu Chenshuang rubbed her temples. For her, rainy days were actually quite nice, perfect for catching up on sleep. The pitter-patter of the raindrops was also reassuring. Perhaps she had been too tense lately and needed a good rest.
