Chapter 40: I Don’t Climb the Fence at My Own Home
Xiao Peng was awakened by the Mediterranean breeze and felt a splitting headache.
How much did Fabian and I drink yesterday? We even emptied the fridge of beer!
Pascal's mother had a habit of drinking during her lifetime. According to Fabian, Pascal's mother cried and drank every day for a long time, and her death was also related to alcoholism: drunk driving.
With a father who doesn't care about his family and a mother who doesn't take care of her children, it's quite good that Pascal hasn't committed suicide yet!
In memory of his mother, Pascal filled the refrigerator in this house with beer and a wine cabinet filled with fine wine. Those fine wines wouldn't break you, so the beer in the refrigerator would be fine, right? So, they both got drunk!
Fabian has been quite unlucky, actually. Why is he so close to Pascal? They're essentially the family's "Underdog Alliance." There's a reason Fabian's been stuck guarding the database in Cape Adege: his older siblings are so much better than him! That's why he's taking this show so seriously; he's eager to prove himself!
He had his own plans for asking Xiao Peng to drink yesterday. It was not to alienate the relationship between Xiao Peng and Pascal, but on the contrary to establish a good relationship with Xiao Peng.
Pascal is his family's "Rain Man": when it comes to earning power, no other young person in the family can match him! And he makes his money not through family connections but on his own. Such a person would be a treasure in any family. However, due to his personality, Pascal simply can't fit in. He only has a good relationship with Fabian, who invested in Fabian's show this time.
But their relationship was only limited to the level of "not bad". Looking at Xiao Peng and Pascal, they both called each other "Little Pa".
It was difficult to get along well with Pascal, after all, no one knew what he was thinking, but it was easy to get along well with Xiao Peng! So he came up with a "roundabout way to save the country".
Xiao Peng climbed out of bed and went into the bathroom. Actually, he still hadn't developed the habit of taking a shower in the morning after so many years in France. But he drank too much yesterday, and it would be inappropriate not to take a shower.
What did you talk about when you were drinking yesterday?
Xiao Peng scratched his head, as if he'd lost his memory from drinking. He vaguely remembered topics like 'Cousteau Diving Association' and 'Undersea Salvage'. They seemed quite important!
But he couldn't remember it no matter how hard he tried, so he decided to ask Fabian first.
Uh, where's Fabian?
After taking a shower, Xiao Peng threw his dirty clothes that smelled of alcohol into the washing machine, changed into new clothes, and ran to the kitchen, where there was milk, bacon, and toast, all of which he had bought on the way back yesterday.
Xiao Peng heated the milk, fried the bacon in oil, put it into the toast, spread butter on it and it was ready to eat.
Xiao Peng usually makes do with breakfast like this; after all, when in a foreign country, one must adapt to local customs. But after a hangover, these things are really hard to eat. Although milk is good for the stomach, it's not as pleasant as millet porridge. If you add fried dough sticks and tea eggs to it...
My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
It turns out that there are no conditions to do all these things on the boat due to the limited space. Today when I go to Marseille to pick up the boat, I must buy some seasonings and ingredients to cook at home!
After eating and drinking, Xiao Peng dug out a few garbage bags: he had a mess on the rooftop yesterday after drinking. After all, this was the house Pascal lent him, and he had to clean it up after making such a mess!
Just as he was about to go upstairs, he heard a loud noise on the stairs which scared Xiao Peng.
He quickly ran over to take a look, and hey, there he was, Fabian! He had tumbled down the stairs! Fortunately, the fall wasn't severe, and he managed to climb back up unsteadily.
After seeing Xiao Peng, his expression was a little embarrassed: "Xiao, I'm fine!"
Xiao Peng nodded and said, "I know you're fine. I'm just worried about the floor! This is Xiao Pa's house. Don't damage the floor!"
Fabian was dumbfounded after hearing this. After a while, he said, "I know why you and Pascal are good friends. You two are both so irritating when you talk!"
Xiao Peng helped him up and frowned, "Oh my god, what the hell is that smell on you? Go to the guest room and wash up!"
Fabian smiled bitterly and said, "This is the first time in my life that I've drunk so much. Where is the guest room? I'll go wash up. Do you have any new clothes?"
Xiao Peng rolled his eyes at him. "I don't have any new ones. Do you want any worn ones? They've been washed!"
Fabian nodded: "Do I have any choice?"
Xiao Peng curled his lips and said, "It's troublesome! Okay, go wash up quickly, I'll go clean up! There's milk, bacon and bread in the kitchen, you can make something for yourself later!"
He had just finished speaking when he heard the doorbell. The person who came to see him so early must be Pascal.
He didn't know where he had put the electronic key, so he simply shouted, "Little Pa, climb over the fence yourself!"
Pascal heard this and shouted, "I don't want to be shot!"
Well, after hearing his answer, Xiao Peng could only run to open the door for him.
Here, in the entire villa area, except for Pascal's house which is surrounded by a high wall, the yards of other houses are surrounded by fences.
In France, private territory is inviolable. If someone enters the yard without the owner's permission, they can be shot without incurring any legal responsibility. This is what Pascal said, "I don't want to be shot."
But it was just a joke, after all, it was his house. Or maybe he just said it because it was a habit he had developed.
The Maasai are known for their passionate and unrestrained nature. If they build a wall, they will be criticized by their neighbors, which is not conducive to good relations with neighbors. So how do they prove that this is their own private space?
They simply enclose the yard with a waist-high fence or a wall made of green plants: this means, look out, this is my private territory, don't come in and cause trouble.
So why use fences or greenery that have no practical value, even if they only protect against bad people? The underlying message is: Look, I'm a very hospitable person. I don't mind friends coming over! I don't mind you seeing how I live my life.
They want to stake out their territory and distance themselves from others, but they also don't want others to gossip about them saying they're unapproachable. To put it bluntly, they want to be a bit of a jerk while also being a saint.
Pascal didn't care about that and built his villa like a castle, with all kinds of anti-theft facilities. Those who know him are just a collector with a strange temper, while those who don't know him would think he is a Latin American drug lord!
Pascal did not come alone, Felix came with him of course.
"Come in, what's the matter with you coming here so early?" Xiao Peng asked in confusion.
Pascal sniffed. "Did you use beer to clean the floor yesterday? Why does the room smell so strongly of alcohol?"
