Chapter 33, Falling into the Water

Chapter 33, Falling into the Water

Having been pampered by the Zhang and Li families since childhood, when had Zhang Youyou ever suffered such a great injustice? After running out of the teaching building, she didn't know where to go. She just kept running and running until she was exhausted. Then, with red eyes, she sobbed and ran to the school lakeside, where there were few people and no one would know that she was crying.

Li Donghao had been following her ever since she ran out. She was full of grievances, and if he went up to her, it would definitely cause an explosion. There were many people on campus, and it was not advisable to make a scene at this time. However, seeing her trembling shoulders, he knew that she was really aggrieved.

Actually, this whole thing is his fault. If he hadn't called Zhang Youyou to his office to help answer the phone, and if he hadn't rushed to the lab, she probably wouldn't have been unjustly accused. Now, she's being accused of "stealing the teacher's USB drive," no wonder she feels wronged. Ultimately, it's all because he didn't think things through.

Seeing her walk towards Lover's Lake at school, Li Donghao's heart jumped into his throat. Zhang Youyou had never suffered such humiliation before. Was she going to jump into the lake? Thinking of this, he disregarded everything else and ran over to hug her around the waist.

"Don't do anything reckless!" Li Donghao comforted her as he carried her away from the lakeside.

Zhang Youyou had originally intended to sit by the lake alone for a while, but was inexplicably carried away. Terrified, she struggled with her hands and feet but failed to escape his arms. In fact, her movements were so violent that both of them fell onto the grass. In her attempt to escape, she kicked and hit him. Unable to bear the pain, Li Donghao let go, and Zhang Youyou rolled to the side. The autumn grass was not yet completely withered, and being near the lake, the dew on the grass made it slippery. Before Zhang Youyou could react, she rolled down the lawn towards the lake. By the time Li Donghao realized what had happened, she had already rolled to the lakeside.

"Youyou!" Li Donghao's mind went blank. He felt as if his heart had been cleaved open, and the pain made it hard for him to breathe.

With a "plop," Zhang Youyou's feet landed on the lake first. Li Donghao scrambled to the lakeside and grabbed her hand just as the water was about to reach her waist.

"Hold on tight!" Li Donghao said. The grass was slippery and he was about to give up, but he still held on to her with one hand and dug his other hand firmly into the grass.

The anger of being wronged had long been forgotten by Zhang Youyou; all she wanted now was to live.

"Help!" Zhang Youyou barely managed to lift her head and shout, but unfortunately, with half of her body on the grass and half in the lake, she couldn't muster any strength, and no one except Li Donghao could hear her cries for help.

"Stop messing around, hold on tight to me!" Li Donghao was also about to give up, and he was afraid that if she moved around and dragged him in with her, it would be even harder to climb out.

The leather shoes tore through the turf and embedded themselves in the damp soil, barely holding him up. Li Donghao tried to push down harder to increase the point of contact between the shoes and the soil.

Li Donghao struggled on the shore while Zhang Youyou lay there, her grip on his hand gradually weakening. She wanted to say that she couldn't hold on any longer, but when she opened her mouth, she couldn't say anything. However, Li Donghao noticed that her hand was loosening, so he gritted his teeth and tried to hold her tighter.

Just as the two were locked in a stalemate, Li Donghao suddenly heard someone shout, "There's someone in the lake!"

He tried to call for help, but all his strength was used to support himself and he couldn't shout. Fortunately, someone came quickly and used ropes and shovels to pull them up.

Li Donghao was alright; his clothes were just covered in mud and grass. Zhang Youyou, on the other hand, was in a much worse state. Most of her body was submerged in the lake and she was soaked. Fortunately, someone brought her a blanket and wrapped her up, preventing her from getting hurt again.

Li Donghao sat on the ground, looking at the frightened Zhang Youyou with some concern. However, with so many people around, he couldn't do anything. He could only get up and thank them first, then go to Zhang Youyou's side and help her up. He wanted to take her back to her dormitory, but since she was in such a state, it wasn't appropriate for her to go back directly. So, he decided to take her home first.
