Chapter 45, Attitude
Stepping out of the office and away from the teaching building, Zhang Youyou turned to the girl and said, "Thank you for today. If it weren't for you, I would have been forever branded as a 'thief'."
"I didn't mean to hide it. There was no class with Ms. Jiang on Friday, and I couldn't find her over the weekend. If I hadn't heard someone mention it today, I probably wouldn't have known the USB drive was hers." The girl spoke softly, and Zhang Youyou had a very good impression of her.
"I guess this is what they mean by 'the net of heaven is vast, and though its meshes are wide, nothing escapes it,'" Zhang Youyou remarked. "How about this, as a thank you, I'll treat you to a meal—the school cafeteria or some street food, it's up to you!"
The girl smiled and declined, "If there's nothing else, I'll head back now."
Seeing her about to leave, Zhang Youyou asked if he could add her on WeChat so they could stay in touch. The girl glanced at Li Donghao and declined. Watching her departing figure, Zhang Youyou couldn't help but sigh, "There are still more good people than bad in this world!"
Lee Dong-ho, who had been by her side the whole time, couldn't help but ruffle her hair and ask if she was hungry. Then he took her to eat.
They ate together before because Zhang Youyou introduced him to girls, and they ate together today to appease her.
"I think you went a bit too far today," Li Donghao said calmly during the meal, while Zhang Youyou, who was wolfing down her food, didn't seem to care at all.
“If she had done the right thing, she wouldn’t have been so aggressive.” Zhang Youyou explained after drinking half a glass of beverage, “I didn’t want this to happen, but she accused me of stealing her things for no reason. How could I tolerate that? So what if she’s a teacher? Does that mean teachers can just falsely accuse people?”
Li Donghao didn't expect his words to elicit so many feelings from her, so he simply shut up and let her chatter on.
"I'm being generous to her. If it were Li Dongshuo, I would have beaten him to death!" Zhang Youyou said through gritted teeth.
"Have you considered that by doing this today you made her lose face, and she will dislike you even more in the future?" Li Donghao reminded her.
"We're not in the same department, so we won't run into each other," Zhang Youyou said nonchalantly.
"You're not in the same department. What about that girl? She was just kindly giving away the USB drive, and ended up becoming a witness by accident. What do you think Professor Jiang will do to her?"
Zhang Youyou couldn't help but shudder. "How could she be so vicious?"
"You can never be too careful!" Li Donghao reminded him.
Zhang Youyou's appetite, which had finally improved, suddenly decreased again, and she tightened her grip on her chopsticks.
“Youyou, there are all kinds of people in this world. Just as rice feeds a hundred different kinds of people, not all grievances can be seen, and not all injustices can be met with a fair response. You should endure what you should endure and let go of what you should let go of.”
After carefully considering his words, Zhang Youyou asked curiously, "Are you saying I shouldn't seek justice for myself?"
"I mean you shouldn't have acted so impulsively!"
With her chopsticks poking into the plate, Zhang Youyou looked at Li Donghao and said righteously, "I know there are many injustices in this world, and I know that many people who seek justice will eventually become victims of violence. But Li Donghao, if everyone suffers injustice and swallows it all, without ever speaking out about their grievances, wouldn't they be too frustrated? Don't tell me that good and evil will be rewarded in the end. If you can't even protect yourself, why should God care about you?"
These words left Li Donghao speechless.
Zhang Youyou placed the chopsticks on the plate, stood up, picked up the plate, looked at the top of his head, and said, "I know you mean well, but I'm not the type to take things lying down. From now on, you be my teaching assistant and I'll be my student. Let's not have any contact anymore."
After saying that, he picked up his tray and was about to leave, but before he even reached the table behind him, Li Donghao spoke up, "Do you still want your phone case?"
Without turning his head, Zhang Youyou said, "I want it! I bought it, why shouldn't I?"
