Chapter 69, The Competition
To maintain her best condition, Zhang Youyou didn't drink any water throughout the entire process, but every time she saw Meng Xiao make a successful shot, she would excitedly shout her support. If Liu Ping and Li Yanyan hadn't been holding her back from the left and right, she probably would have been even more excited than the cheerleaders.
I chose this ladylike outfit for her to show her gentle and charming nature, but I didn't expect it to backfire.
"Youyou! Youyou!" Li Yanyan grabbed Zhang Youyou, who was about to stand up and shout, and reminded him, "We're here to watch the game, not to cheer for him. There's no need to be so excited!"
"But they really played very well!" Zhang Youyou explained earnestly, still caught up in her excitement.
"Yes, I know, but they have cheerleaders and classmates and friends to support them, they really don't need you!" Li Yanyan regretted recommending Meng Xiao to her.
Zhang Youyou's ignited emotions instantly plummeted, and she sat there sullenly.
Liu Ping looked at them, and Li Yanyan was in a dilemma, but ultimately chose to let her be herself.
Li Yanyan silently prayed that Meng Xiao wouldn't be frightened.
Meng Xiao, focused on playing basketball, didn't think too much about it. He just felt happy every time he made a successful shot and saw a girl in a khaki trench coat waving her hands and excitedly shouting "Great!"
"Stop daydreaming, we're still playing!" As he passed by Meng Xiao, A-Kai nudged his shoulder to remind him. Meng Xiao quickly shook off his chaotic thoughts and focused on playing.
She had watched Li Dongshuo play basketball many times before, but she found it boring. Li Dongshuo, that simple-minded and physically strong player, could shoot three-pointers like it was nothing. Every time she saw so many people cheering for Li Dongshuo, Zhang Youyou would cheer for the opponents in a very cooperative way. The opponents thought that Zhang Youyou had seen their handsomeness and hard work. In reality, she just wanted to put Li Dongshuo down. But Meng Xiao was different. He was gentle, spoke gently, and played basketball handsomely. He was a sunny boy no matter how you looked at him, unlike Li Dongshuo, that annoying player.
"Go Meng Xiao!" After losing by three points, Zhang Youyou stood up to encourage him, ignoring the strange looks from those around her. Only the three people beside her silently lowered their heads.
During halftime, Zhang Youyou wanted to bring him water, but Liu Ping stopped her.
"To avoid mistakes, they all have their own water." Having spent years in the gym, Liu Ping knew a thing or two about this.
Zhang Youyou's lips twitched. "Does someone really drug someone in a situation like this?"
"This is called 'always being wary of others'!" Liu Ping reminded him, and Zhang Youyou silently put the water back into the bag.
During the break, Meng Xiao looked up at her, their eyes met, and Zhang Youyou gave him a "good luck" gesture. Meng Xiao smiled, wiped his face with a towel, drank some water, listened to the coach say a few words, and waited for the second half.
The first half ended 28-27, with only one point separating the two teams, making the first ten minutes of the second half crucial. Although friendship comes first and competition second, no one wants to be second if they can win first place, so the second half was exceptionally intense. Basically, every time F University scored a point, the opposing team would immediately follow suit, and vice versa. The two teams were locked in a fierce battle for victory, and Zhang Youyou, who had cheered for half the game, was too exhausted to speak. She sat in a chair, drinking a bottle of mineral water, and Li Yanyan suspected that she had bought the drinks for herself.
With five minutes left in the game, every second of those five minutes was precious. The score between the two teams was tied, and if there was no result in the last few minutes, it would probably have to go into overtime. The basketball players were also starting to feel fatigued, so the last five minutes were extremely valuable.
Taking advantage of the opponent's inattention, Meng Xiao snatched the basketball away. Unfortunately, he was surrounded and couldn't pass it to his teammates. Just as he was hesitating, he made a bold decision. Although he wasn't good at it, the game was about to end, and there would be overtime if necessary. So he gently dribbled the basketball a few times, jumped up, and shot the basketball towards the basket...
