Chapter 75, The Cold War
Zhang Youyou returned to school the next afternoon, taking only the bag she had brought with her and nothing else. Li Donghao tried to persuade her to stay, but seeing her indifferent eyes, he had no choice but to give up.
It seemed she remembered their argument. Lee Dong-ho sat slumped on the sofa, at a loss for what to do.
Zhang Youyou was stunned when she saw Meng Xiao downstairs in the dormitory building, and only came to her senses when the other person came up to her.
"Are you alright?" Meng Xiao waved his hand in front of her eyes.
"No, it's nothing." Zhang Youyou gave an awkward smile. "What are you doing here?"
“You didn’t reply to my messages when you were taken away by Teaching Assistant Li that night. I was worried, so I’ve been coming here for the past two days. Li Yanyan said you took the day off yesterday and she doesn’t know about today, so I thought I’d try my luck. And I was really lucky!”
Looking at his sunny smile, Zhang Youyou felt all the gloom of the past two days had been swept away.
"But you don't look well. Are you sick?" Meng Xiao said, taking a step forward and placing the back of his large hand on her forehead. When their eyes met, he realized he had been rash and immediately withdrew his hand.
"I'm sorry, I'm not..."
"It's okay, I'm fine now." Zhang Youyou forced a bitter smile.
"Alright, I'm relieved to see you back. Go on upstairs and get some rest!"
"Okay!" Zhang Youyou nodded. "I'll go upstairs now, we'll keep in touch on WeChat!"
"good!"
Zhang Youyou walked in with a blush on her face, and before entering, she couldn't help but turn back and wave goodbye to him.
When she returned to the dormitory, only Cheng Qiu was there. As soon as Cheng Qiu saw her, she immediately stepped forward, grabbed her arms with both hands, and looked her up and down. Zhang Youyou's body tensed up, not knowing what she was going to do.
"Thank goodness, it's still relatively intact!"
Zhang Youyou escaped from her grasp and asked in confusion, "What do you mean?"
"Of course it's Lee Dong-ho!" Although they called him Assistant Lee when they met, they all called him by his full name in private. "Didn't you see the look in his eyes when he came to arrest you that day? He practically wanted to kill us!"
Zhang Youyou hates hearing his name the most right now. She walked past Cheng Qiu to her seat, put her bag on the table, and said without turning her head, "Who does he think he is!"
Cheng Qiu's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. "Youyou, are you crazy?"
Zhang Youyou sat there silently, lost in thought.
She used to admire and fear Li Donghao at the same time. She envied his intelligence and ability, but feared his rigidity, seriousness, and high standards. Now, she only felt that he was domineering, old-fashioned, and yet she couldn't escape his control. She regretted coming here, but she couldn't leave either.
When Liu Ping returned, she saw Zhang Youyou and wanted to say a few words of concern, but Cheng Qiu gave her a wink, so Liu Ping remained silent. Zhang Youyou didn't say a word until she went to bed that night, just hiding behind the bed curtains, staring blankly at the WeChat messages from Meng Xiao. Because she was sick, she missed his messages, and now it was too late to reply, so she simply gave up.
As she put down her phone, the image of Li Donghao's expression when she left suddenly flashed into her mind—a look of grievance, restraint, and unspoken words. But so what? He ruined her and their celebration party, he caused her to get a fever and fall ill. What did he have to feel aggrieved about?
She pulled the blanket up over herself, turned over, and saw Yu Gui dog lying next to her on the pillow. She reached out and hugged it, burying her face in its side.
If it were Meng Xiao, she could explain it as admiring him and having feelings for him, but as for Li Donghao, she couldn't explain it. Sometimes she felt that he spoiled her, and sometimes she felt that he was very unreasonable. In short, he was a troublesome person. If possible, she would never want to live in his house again.
Actually, she has quite a bit of savings, enough to buy a small house here. But she doesn't know where she'll go in the future, so she doesn't dare to squander it easily. If she really wants to study here for four years, or even pursue a master's or doctoral degree, buying a house here like he did wouldn't be a bad idea. At least there would be a place to store those kids.
My mind kept wandering, but I couldn't come to any conclusion.
