Chapter 15 Crisis

The visitor was a short young man, about twenty years old. He looked at Zhang Jintao with some eagerness, "Chairman Zhang, there are still seven families in our community who haven't joined the self-help group. We sent someone to invite them today, but none of them agreed. Two families even kicked us out."

The short young man was called Guo Gang. He had originally been a security guard at the residential complex. He had come out to work alone, but he couldn't bear to leave his job and was selected as one of the on-call staff, staying with the complex's property management. Initially, he was on duty, quite content with guarding a pile of food. Later, when a resident came to their door, he took the initiative to hand over the food.

Zhang Jintao and his men detained the remaining security guards on duty. It was Guo Gang who persuaded them to join the self-help group one by one. Now, because of his most active performance, he was appointed as the security team leader, leading his brothers to maintain public order in the community, which made Zhang Jintao look up to him.

Guo Gang exaggerated how these families had refused to let him join the self-help group. "President, I think these families are just unwilling to cooperate with you and are hindering us from overcoming this difficult time together. What do you think we should do?"

When the self-help association was first established, it hoped that everyone would stick together for warmth and find food to survive the snowstorm. But now that food has been found, the nature of the self-help association has changed.

However, these two high-sounding words still made Zhang Jintao feel very comfortable. "Since they won't cooperate, don't blame us for not considering the face of our old neighbors. Gangzi, take a few brothers with you today, and let's go have a good talk with those families and do some ideological work. How can we disrupt the rules of our community just because of a few families' uncooperativeness?"

Guo Gang was also a smart man. After hearing what Zhang Jintao said, he knew his attitude and felt happy.

If he could plunder some supplies from those families, he could also make some money. As long as it wasn't too excessive, Zhang Jintao wouldn't care about the things he hid privately.

In fact, he had been wanting to do it for a long time. He was not a resident of this community, but now he was working under Zhang Jintao and wanted to show off his power.

"President, I'll take a few brothers with me and go again." Guo Gang said immediately.

Zhang Jintao nodded: "There will be meat for you brothers to eat when you come back! This morning I asked the kitchen staff to cook the two chickens in the freezer. The brothers in the club have worked hard, especially you usually have to do security work. Come back and have some good nourishment." As a former junior executive of the company, he naturally knew how to control his subordinates.

He has thoroughly understood the principle that if you want a horse to run, you have to feed it grass.

Sure enough, Guo Gang swallowed his saliva and instantly became more energetic.

Even he hadn't eaten chicken in a long time. Ever since the price increase, it was difficult for him to afford meat with his daily salary, not to mention the shortage of supplies after the heavy snow. It was really hard to taste meat.

“Bang, bang, bang!”

There was another rapid knock on the door. It was hard to believe that these people kept coming to Lu Qin's house, even shoveling snow in front of her door just to find them.

Fortunately, Lu Qin heard the noise and locked the door early, blocking it with tables and chairs. The windows were also closed tightly to ensure that no one from outside could see what was happening inside their house.

Hearing the unusual, rapid knocks on the door, Lu Qin felt something was amiss. She wanted to go see what was going on, but her mother stopped her.

"Don't go!"

Lu Qin squeezed her mother's hand soothingly. "It's okay, Mom. I just wanted to see how many people were outside. The door is blocked, so they can't get in for a while."

Lu Qin put on his clothes and found a baseball bat, holding it tightly in his hand.

The baseball bat was also something he had unpacked from a package. Based on the principle that there was no garbage, it was just something he couldn't use temporarily, Lu Qin had left it at home. Now it was just the right weapon for self-defense.

"Knock, knock, knock! Open the door!"

"We are from the Self-Help Association. Someone reported that there is a thief in your house! Open the door and check!"

The knocking on the door became louder and louder, and there was even the sound of metal colliding and hitting the door, shaking the whole door.

Fortunately, it is a high-end residential area and the doors are made of copper and cannot be easily broken.

Lu Qin was worried, and she felt a little nervous as she listened to the group of people outside yelling at her house. She hadn't considered such a situation. In her previous life, she had never imagined a safer place than this neighborhood.

It was a mistake for her not to consider the difficulties that would arise in the early stages of the apocalypse before the base was "recaptured." What if the door gave way and someone got in? What would happen to her and her mother?

Lu Qin panicked.

The comfortable life these days made her lose some of her vigilance. She shouldn't ignore important safety issues.

But there are few ways to remedy the situation now, and she can only hold the baseball bat tightly. If someone breaks into the house and does something bad to them, only the weapon in her hand can protect herself.

In a moment, she finally made up her mind: personal safety was paramount. If she lost the supplies she had painstakingly stockpiled, the worst she could do was to flee to a nearby shelter. While life would be difficult, as long as both mother and daughter were well, it wouldn't be worse than her previous life.

Sacrificing a pawn to protect the rook is currently the best method.

But it hasn't come to that yet.

"I knew this lousy organization had no good intentions!" Liang Shuyu cursed under his breath, "I wonder if the police still care about things these days?"

Lu Qin shook her head. Even if there was one, he would probably be too busy now. Far water cannot quench immediate thirst. At this time, she can only rely on herself.

"Listen up, everyone inside! We're from the Self-Help Society. If you don't open the door to check, it will be like you admitting you're thieves!"

Lu Qin still didn't respond.

She couldn't answer, and let the people outside know about her personnel situation, so that she would be less afraid.

Fortunately, the door was strong enough. Although the group of people outside argued for a long time, they were unable to successfully break the door open and had no choice but to leave cursing.

Lu Qin breathed a sigh of relief.

The door is the solid line of defense of her house. As long as the door is not broken, it can block the danger from outside.

But they will definitely not give up. This time they broke the door, next time they may score directly.

"Mom, starting tonight, let's all be alert. If they don't give up and come up in the middle of the night, I'm afraid we'll be in trouble."

Liang Shuyu was a little worried: "Okay, Mom knows. Anyway, Mom can't sleep well at night, so I'll keep watch at night."

Lu Qin shook her head. "It's definitely not okay if I don't sleep. I'll take turns with you."

"Alright."
