Chapter 31 Covert Exclusion

Fan Shengmei slowly got up from the sofa, went into the kitchen, and poured herself a glass of water. After taking a sip, she looked at the brightly lit city outside the window and clenched her fists. She told herself that since she had chosen this path, she must continue. Tomorrow, she would face everything at the company with a completely new attitude, and no matter how difficult the situation, she would not give up easily.

Early in the morning, sunlight streamed through the window onto Fan Shengmei's desk. She arrived at the company early, full of energy, ready to start the new day. However, in the days that followed, Fan Shengmei gradually noticed something was wrong. She was always assigned unimportant peripheral tasks, such as organizing documents and compiling statistics—basic and tedious work—while she didn't even have the opportunity to participate in discussions about the company's important projects.

"Fan Shengmei, please organize this month's market research report." The department manager placed a thick stack of documents on her desk, then turned and left. Fan Shengmei looked at the pile of documents, feeling a little disappointed, but silently accepted them anyway. She knew that to gain a foothold in this company, she couldn't let any task slip by, no matter how insignificant it seemed.

While organizing the documents, Fan Shengmei overheard several colleagues whispering: "Look at Fan Shengmei, she's always doing these peripheral tasks. I wonder when she'll be able to participate in core projects." "Hmph, I think she just doesn't have the ability. Otherwise, why wouldn't the manager assign her to these projects?" These words stung Fan Shengmei's heart like needles, but she pretended not to hear them. She only paused slightly in organizing the documents before speeding up again.

As time went on, Fan Shengmei became increasingly certain that she was being secretly ostracized by her colleagues. She began to pay attention to the actions of those around her, and after some observation, she discovered that it was some old guard within the company who were behind it all. These people had been with the company for a long time and had formed their own cliques. They were worried that Fan Shengmei, a newcomer, would threaten their positions, so they wanted to squeeze her out of the core project team.

Once, the company was preparing to launch an important collaborative project, and Fan Shengmei eagerly anticipated being included. However, when the project team list was announced, she was once again excluded. Looking at the familiar names on the list, Fan Shengmei felt a surge of anger and resentment. She decided she would no longer sit idly by and was determined to find an opportunity to prove herself.

After get off work, people gradually left the company, and the office area slowly quieted down. Fan Shengmei sat alone at her workstation, the air around her seemingly frozen. She stared at the organized data on her computer screen, lost in thought. Outside the window, the sky had completely darkened, and the city's neon lights flickered, creating a stark contrast with the silence inside the office.

Fan Shengmei knew that to break this deadlock, she had to take the initiative. She began using her spare time to study the company's past successful projects, learning from their experiences and techniques. At the same time, she kept abreast of industry trends and worked hard to improve her professional knowledge. She believed that as long as she was good enough, those who ostracized her would have nothing to say.

While studying the case studies, Fan Shengmei discovered some new ideas that could be applied to her current work. Excitedly, she wrote these thoughts down, preparing to report them to her supervisor at a suitable time. However, she also knew that gaining her supervisor's approval wouldn't be easy; the established figures in the workplace certainly wouldn't readily give her a chance to showcase herself.

As the days went by, Fan Shengmei diligently completed her peripheral tasks while searching for opportunities to prove herself. She kept a close eye on every development in the company, not letting any possible breakthrough slip by.

One day, the department manager called a meeting in the office to discuss a project plan that was about to be launched. Fan Shengmei arrived at the meeting room early and sat in a corner, quietly listening to her colleagues speak. Halfway through the meeting, the group disagreed on a key aspect of the project, each sticking to their own opinion and arguing endlessly.

At this moment, Fan Shengmei felt her opportunity had arrived. She took a deep breath, stood up, and methodically explained her views on this aspect. Combining previously researched cases and industry trends, she proposed a novel solution. Initially, her colleagues looked at her with skepticism, some even whispering, "What good ideas could she possibly have?" But as Fan Shengmei explained in detail, everyone gradually quieted down, and the skepticism on their faces was slowly replaced by surprise.

After listening to Fan Shengmei's speech, the department manager nodded slightly and fell into deep thought. After a moment, he said, "Fan Shengmei's idea is very innovative; we can discuss it in more detail." Hearing the manager's approval, Fan Shengmei felt a surge of excitement, but she knew that this was only the first step, and many more challenges awaited her.

After the meeting, Fan Shengmei returned to her workstation, her mind still racing. She knew she had attracted the attention of her superiors, but the old guard in the workplace certainly wouldn't give up. What other methods would they devise to deal with her? Could she successfully break through the exclusion and truly integrate into the core project team? Gazing at the bustling city nightscape outside the window, Fan Shengmei was filled with worry, but at the same time, her resolve hardened.
