Chapter 3 New Beginnings and Old Dilemmas

Fan Shengmei dragged her heavy steps out of the hotel. The cool night breeze hit her face, but it couldn't dispel the turmoil in her heart. She looked up at the brightly lit city, silently pondering how to choose over the next three days. Back in her cramped rented room, the surrounding silence seemed to be demanding an answer from her. Meanwhile, Meng Yanchen sat in his luxurious office, looking at Fan Shengmei's file on the table, a slight smile playing on his lips, seemingly certain that she would make the right choice.

For the next two days, Fan Shengmei was torn. The debts of her family of origin weighed heavily on her mind, making it hard to breathe. Every time she wanted to refuse Meng Yanchen's deal, the debt collectors' calls and her family's cold faces would flash before her eyes. Finally, on the evening of the third day, Fan Shengmei took a deep breath and dialed Meng Yanchen's number, her voice trembling slightly: "Mr. Meng, I agree to your deal." On the other end of the line, Meng Yanchen's voice remained calm: "Very good. I will arrange for someone to meet with you tomorrow to discuss the details."

The next morning, Fan Shengmei arrived at the company early. She deliberately dressed neatly and cleanly, trying to greet the new beginning with a fresh look. However, as she entered the company, she clearly felt the strange looks from her colleagues. Before she could react, her boss, Wang Qiang, walked over with a dark face and said sarcastically, "Fan Shengmei, you're really a busy person, aren't you? You still have time to attend high-end cocktail parties." Fan Shengmei's heart tightened; she knew trouble was coming. She tried to respond politely, "Mr. Wang, I took leave to handle some personal matters. I will catch up on my work as soon as possible."

Wang Qiang snorted coldly and slammed a thick stack of documents onto Fan Shengmei's desk. The dust kicked up by the documents made Fan Shengmei wrinkle her nose. "This is all work that's been piling up these past two days. The client needs it urgently; it has to be finished before the end of the day." Wang Qiang finished speaking, crossing his arms, his eyes full of sarcasm. Fan Shengmei looked at the mountain of documents and felt a wave of despair. The documents reeked of ink, mingling with the stale air of the office, making her feel nauseous. She quickly flipped through them and found that not only was the quantity enormous, but the content was also tedious and complex, involving the organization and analysis of data from multiple projects. Even if several people worked together, it would be difficult to finish in a day.

Some of her colleagues cast sympathetic glances, but quickly lowered their heads to continue working, as if afraid of getting into trouble; others whispered amongst themselves, occasionally letting out gloating laughter. The clatter of keyboards and whispers mingled in the cramped office, making Fan Shengmei feel extremely irritated. She took a deep breath, telling herself she had to calm down. This was an old predicament she had to face, and she also had new relationships to balance.

Fan Shengmei quickly composed herself, turned on her computer, and began processing her tasks one by one. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, her eyes glued to the screen, her mind racing. Time ticked by, and the temperature in the office seemed to rise steadily. Fine beads of sweat appeared on Fan Shengmei's forehead, and the back of her clothes was soaked with perspiration. She paid no heed to this, immersing herself completely in her work.

However, the difficulties were far greater than she had imagined. One important document contained obvious errors in its data. After carefully checking the original documents, Fan Shengmei discovered that someone had deliberately tampered with it. A surge of anger welled up within her, but this was not the time to assign blame; she had to find a way to correct the data. She rubbed her sore eyes and plunged back into the tedious data calculations and corrections.

Meanwhile, in his office at the Fu Group, Meng Yanchen appeared focused on his work, but his eyes kept glancing at his phone. He was monitoring Fan Shengmei's situation through various channels, and when he learned that she was being harassed by her boss at work, he frowned slightly. He was considering whether to lend a hand, and how to do so without making Fan Shengmei feel slighted.

While diligently correcting the data, Fan Shengmei pondered her deal with Meng Yanchen. She knew that from the moment she agreed to the deal, her life had changed. But she didn't want to rely on Meng Yanchen from the start; she longed to establish herself in this new beginning through her own abilities, while also resolving her old predicaments. She silently encouraged herself, determined to complete these tasks no matter what and prove her capabilities to Wang Qiang.

As time passed and night fell, her colleagues gradually left the office, leaving only Fan Shengmei still busy at her workstation. The office lights were dim and glaring, and the surrounding silence contrasted sharply with her busy work. Her stomach was growling with hunger, but she didn't care at all, just constantly switching between documents and the computer, her fingers becoming numb from typing for so long.

Finally, as the clock struck midnight, Fan Shengmei finished most of her work. She leaned wearily back in her chair, looking at the completed document on her computer screen, a sense of accomplishment welling up inside her. But she knew there was still some finishing touches to be done, and she wasn't sure if those would satisfy Wang Qiang.

Faced with Wang Qiang's difficult demands, will Fan Shengmei be able to successfully complete her work? And when will Meng Yanchen step in to help?
