Chapter 45 The First Signs of a Misunderstanding

Fan Shengmei watched Meng Yanchen leave, her heart filled with conflict. The party continued, but she had no desire to stay any longer. Su Ran was saying something to her, and she just nodded mechanically. Finally, she made an excuse and hurriedly left the party. When she got home, as soon as she got out of her car, she saw a familiar car parked not far away, and a familiar figure was standing beside the car, quietly watching her.

When Meng Yanchen saw Fan Shengmei return, he walked over, his face clearly displeased. "Get in the car," he said in a low voice, carrying an unyielding tone. Fan Shengmei hesitated for a moment, then got in. The atmosphere inside the car was oppressive, making it hard to breathe. Meng Yanchen started the car and sped off, neither of them speaking.

The city's neon lights flickered across their faces through the car window. Fan Shengmei stole a glance at Meng Yanchen, only to see his lips tightly pressed together, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. She opened her mouth, wanting to explain, but didn't know where to begin.

After a long silence, Meng Yanchen finally broke the silence, his voice filled with jealousy and barely concealed pressure, "What's going on between you and Su Ran? You two seemed so close at the party today."

Fan Shengmei was stunned, and immediately felt wronged. "What could there be between him and me? I went to the party for the project. Su Ran has connections and can help me, that's why I accepted his invitation. Why can't you understand?"

Meng Yanchen sneered, "For the sake of the project? You need to get so close to him to push the project forward? Haven't you considered my feelings?"

Fan Shengmei felt a surge of anger rising in her heart. "How could I not have thought of your feelings? I work so hard, isn't it all to help you and the company? And you, without even knowing the facts, are criticizing me."

Meng Yanchen frowned deeply. "You didn't bother to find out the truth? I saw him pull you along with my own eyes, and you didn't break free. You two practically announced your relationship in front of everyone!"

"Meng Yanchen, you've gone too far!" Fan Shengmei's voice trembled with anger. "He was holding me back then, and there were so many people around. How could I break free? You only see the surface, but you're unwilling to listen to my explanation."

The car stopped at a red light. Meng Yanchen turned to look at Fan Shengmei, his eyes filled with scrutiny and suspicion. "Then tell me, you really have absolutely no feelings for him?"

Fan Shengmei stared wide-eyed at Meng Yanchen in disbelief. "You actually asked me that? Is that the kind of person you think I am? I always thought there was trust between us."

The light turned green, but Meng Yanchen didn't respond. He simply stepped on the gas, and the car surged forward. Fan Shengmei was thrown backward by the inertia, her resentment and anger reaching their peak. "Stop the car! Stop the car!"

Meng Yanchen seemed not to hear Fan Shengmei's words and continued driving with focus. Fan Shengmei reached for the car door, "If you don't stop, I'll jump out!"

Meng Yanchen hurriedly pulled the car over to the side of the road. Before he could say anything, Fan Shengmei had already opened the car door and gotten out.

The night wind was a bit chilly, blowing across Fan Shengmei's face and instantly drying her tears. Looking at Meng Yanchen in the car, her voice choked with emotion, she said, "Meng Yanchen, I'm truly disappointed. I've done so much for you and for the company, yet you doubt me like this."

Meng Yanchen also got out of the car and tried to pull Fan Shengmei away, "Shengmei, I..."

Fan Shengmei shook off his hand. "Don't touch me! I really don't know if your feelings for me are genuine or just because you're possessive." With that, she turned and walked away, her hurried steps disappearing under the dim streetlights.

Meng Yanchen stood there, watching Fan Shengmei's retreating figure, filled with remorse. He wanted to chase after her, but didn't know how to face her. The argument earlier made him realize that, driven by jealousy and company pressure, he had said some hurtful things to Fan Shengmei. But he truly couldn't bear to see Fan Shengmei with Su Ran.

Fan Shengmei walked alone by the roadside, the streetlights casting long shadows of her. Her mind was in turmoil. On one hand, she was disappointed in Meng Yanchen; on the other hand, she was beginning to doubt his feelings for her. Their relationship had progressed from a contractual transaction to a gradual deepening of affection, but today's argument had made everything seem blurry. Did Meng Yanchen truly love her, or was it simply because she was the one he had chosen, someone no one else could touch?

She didn't know how long she had walked until her legs ached, at which point she stopped. She found a bench by the roadside and sat down, watching the passing cars, feeling utterly lost.

Meng Yanchen remained standing by the car, gazing in the direction Fan Shengmei had left, not leaving for a long time. He was pondering how to salvage the situation, how to make Fan Shengmei believe that his feelings for her were genuine.
