Chapter 30: Lyle, Scotland, and the Undercover Agent

Chapter 30: Lyle, Scotland, and the Undercover Agent

Matsuda Jinpei and Hagiwara Kenji were still secretly conducting undercover investigations, unaware that they were about to be caught.

As Morofushi Kagemitsu was pondering how to adjust his schedule, he suddenly found himself hearing a broadcast in his mind—the kind of electronic welcome message that automatically played when you entered a hotel decades ago:

[Anti-fraud expert reminds you: Latest news!]

Huh?

Morofushi Kagemitsu no longer cared about this old-fashioned new notification method. He quickly took out his phone and immediately opened the latest news notification:

[Is good fortune falling from the sky? Beware of those with questionable stances who seem likely to be recruited!]

Not long ago, he thought that Ray could be turned: ...

I have a feeling you guys are targeting me, and I have proof!

Morofushi Kagemitsu's focus was not only on the content, but also on the form.

He read the title aloud again in his mind, and he felt that this report looked different from the previous ones.

With that mindset in mind, he reread the content and confirmed that it wasn't an illusion. The style, or rather the narrative perspective, had indeed changed.

In the past, news reports from a neutral perspective, written by official sources or narrated from an observer's point of view, were so effective that it was easy to spot people being scammed and recovering their losses in time. Now, these news reports are more like educational programs to prevent undercover agents from being scammed.

This does indeed fit the name of the app more closely—the Undercover Anti-Fraud Center.

[The anti-fraud team has now added a new, user-friendly template for its target users, to better assist undercover agents in their infiltration and investigation work (heart emoji)]

I see.

Zhu Fujingguang felt a warmth in his heart and continued to study the reports to learn from the advanced undercover experience.

The main story of this report is about a rookie undercover agent who believed that a certain target still had a conscience and let someone who should have been executed go. Then, he was betrayed by this so-called "merciful" target and lost his own life.

Hmm... let's not learn from this last piece of advice yet.

Let's try to rescue this undercover agent first.

00:21

It will happen tomorrow at noon.

Morofushi Kagemitsu confirmed the key elements, and then habitually extracted the locations and names, one of which, a surname, seemed familiar to him.

Go to the village.

Tomorrow at noon, he and Lai will be setting up sniper positions across from their house, indicating that if threats don't work, they'll just take them out.

It's such a simple task, is there any chance of something unexpected happening? If he changes his mind, then there must be more valuable intelligence.

The Uemura couple ate very quietly; the principle of not speaking while eating or sleeping was ingrained in their lives.

Just then, the windowpane shattered. Mr. Uemura sat there, stunned, clutching his hand, while Mrs. Uemura reacted quickly.

She crawled under the table for cover, but worried about her husband's safety. So, she grabbed his trouser leg and dragged him off the stool, and the couple huddled together under the table, trembling.

...Just then, there was a knock on the door.

"Bang!"

...The husband's body was displayed in the house, and the dying wife still held a gun in her hand, as if she wanted to fight back against the thugs outside the door.

However, it seems it's already too late.

He'd seen in-depth reports like this before, written like a story, but this was the first time he'd seen one so detailed about the crime scene. Normally, he might not have agreed to revealing the details of the crime so easily. But now, he had too much information to verify, and the clearer the report was, the better.

However, things often don't go as planned.

The report became increasingly vague towards the crucial final moments, with no photos provided, leaving him to rely solely on his limited experience to make inferences.

He didn't think he and Lai would show any mercy to scum like President Uemura, so the only person who might let them off the hook was Mrs. Uemura, mentioned in the report. He had investigated President Uemura's family beforehand; his parents lived in the countryside, and the couple had no children. A housewife like Mrs. Uemura led an ordinary, unremarkable life.

How could someone like her have ties to an organization?

He was skeptical, but more than that, he was wary. Many seemingly weak prey are often the more cunning hunters. Since the anti-fraud expert had repeatedly warned him, he naturally wouldn't ignore it; he would be even more cautious in his next actions. Besides Lai, he now had two more seemingly defenseless targets to watch out for.

With heavy thoughts on his mind, Morobushi Kagemitsu did not sleep well that night.

When he got up in the morning, he only made himself a sandwich to fill his stomach. Before leaving the house, he hesitated for a moment before taking out a new pack of black masks from his medical kit, then hurriedly left with his violin bag on his back.

"Let's go."

Lai sat in the driver's seat, a cigarette dangling from his lips. He glanced at him casually, paused on the violin case in Lai's hand, and then turned to gesture for him to get in the car.

Morofushi Kagemitsu chose to sit in the back seat, which gave him enough space to put his instrument case away.

As soon as the car started, Lei subtly began to probe for information:

"Are you going to stake out someone with me?"

As a qualified sniper, he had already figured out that Morofushi Hiromitsu's instrument case actually contained a sniper rifle. And the company president they were going to ambush next had no bodyguards or other protection; one sniper would suffice.

Using this topic to probe is a good option.

Morofushi Kagemitsu understood what Ray meant. He brought the sniper rifle not for the case, but to spread the word that he knew how to snipe through Ray.

He didn't want to be just a money-making accountant; he needed to be both literate and capable to gain the BOSS's favor. Even if he could use this to control the organization's cash flow and even uncover the general direction of some of its activities, he wouldn't be able to obtain many secrets or more specific intelligence. To get more information, he needed to become someone the BOSS trusted.

"It's necessary for tonight's mission," Morofushi Kagemitsu gave him a pre-prepared explanation. "After Uemura's death, security in Kumagai will likely need to be tightened."

Having received the answer, Lei hummed in response, his gaze deep and thoughtful.

They remained silent the rest of the way.

The two arrived near President Uemura's villa.

After hesitating for a moment, Morofushi Kagemitsu decided to have Rai find a place to escort the couple while he personally approached them.

Recalling the contents of that report, he handed his Bluetooth headset to Lai and added, "Mrs. Uemura doesn't seem to be an ordinary housewife. If anything unusual happens, you can fire first."

Ray took the earphones, a hint of surprise flashing in his eyes, but he still nodded in agreement, thinking that Ray had other sources of information.

After assigning tasks, Morofushi Kagemitsu began to tidy himself up, taking out the black coat that the organization required him to wear during missions, and pairing it with the black mask he had brought, covering most of his face, which really gave him the feel of a gangster.

A while later, a letter arrived from Ray:

"alright."

Morobuchi Kagemitsu glanced at the time →

12:00

There are advantages to setting off early; at least it gives him some time to change things.

"Shoot."

"Bang!"

"Ahhh—help!"

Morofushi Kagemitsu stood at the door and could only hear President Uemura crying and calling for help. Mrs. Uemura, on the other hand, remained calm and did not make a sound.

He placed his hand on the gun, knocked on the door, and called out loudly, "Is this Mr. Uemura? What's wrong? Are you alright?"

President Uemura immediately shouted, "Ah! Help! Someone's trying to kill me! Call the police!"

"Bang!"

Another gunshot rang out, and it seemed that President Uemura had tripped and fallen on his way to open the door for him.

Then a soft female voice rang out: "Wait, honey!"

But her calls were to no avail; President Uemura had already rushed to the door and opened it.

That's so stupid.

Morofushi Kagemitsu shook his head, stepped aside in the doorway, drew his gun, and pointed it at President Uemura's head. Then, he shouted from inside the house, "Madam, if you don't want anything to happen to him, don't do anything rash. Don't call the police!"

There was no sound from inside the room.

"...It's you!"

President Uemura plummeted from heaven to hell. He recognized the group. He collapsed in the doorway, utterly humiliated, and cried out, "Don't call the police! Don't call the police, Keiko!"

Morofushi Kagemitsu cautiously peered into the house. Mrs. Uemura was very obedient at this moment, raising her hands above her head in a gesture of surrender.

He then looked at Kamimura, giving him one last chance: "Still unwilling to back down?"

President Uemura, sweating profusely, forced a fawning smile and tried to bargain: "I...we can discuss it further..."

Morofushi Kagemitsu didn't believe him, but then a thought struck him, and he felt this was a good opportunity to test Mrs. Uemura. He said, "It's worth discussing..."

The president looked hopeful.

"...However, there can only be two living people here."

The president's expression froze: "This..."

Morobuchi Kagemitsu adjusted the safety bar.

"Me!" President Uemura roared immediately, "I want to live!"

A strange expression flashed across Morofushi Kagemitsu's face as he turned his head slightly to look at Mrs. Uemura.

"I'm sorry, Keiko... I'm sorry, I'm sorry..."

Mrs. Uemura looked at the president in disbelief, but the useless man could only keep repeating the "sorry" that couldn't save his life at all.

"What a pity, Madam." Morofushi Kagemitsu shook his head and sighed, but his eyes remained fixed on her, as if afraid that she would suddenly pull out some weapon.

Keiko Uemura sat there without struggling, as if she had already accepted her fate of dying in place of her husband.

Morofushi Kagemitsu dared not relax, but the gun was not pointed at the woman waiting to die. Instead, it was pressed against the head of President Uemura and did not move away even an inch.

"Bang!"

President Uemura slowly collapsed, his body mostly lying outside the house.

Since we haven't figured it out yet, we shouldn't set so many obstacles for ourselves. We should focus on achieving our goal first to avoid any unforeseen problems in the nightlife industry.

He then pointed the gun at Keiko Uemura in case she did something rash.

Keiko Uemura just sat there with her eyes downcast, without exclaiming or screaming, as if the one who died at the door was just a stray dog.

Seeing this scene, Zhu Fujingguang suddenly had a thought.

The report never mentioned the gender of the undercover agent. So, is it possible that the undercover agent mentioned in the report is Mrs. Uemura?

Perhaps her original fate was to die because of her husband's betrayal.

A note from the author:

----------------------

So, among the living people present, who is the undercover agent?

A: Yes
