Chapter 51 The real illicit affair was with someone else.
in advance.
Morofushi Kagemitsu repeated the word in his mind and calmly replied, "I'm ready anytime, but it's frustrating that I don't have a suitable weapon."
Vermouth chuckled softly and pointed ahead, saying, "I've prepared a sniper rifle for you at the music store on the third floor across the street."
Morifushi Kagemitsu looked in the direction she pointed, but it was just a vague direction. At this distance, he couldn't see it clearly at all, but the terrain map of the area had already flashed through his mind.
The intersection he was about to cross was surrounded by distinctive buildings of varying heights and layouts, making it an ideal spot for sniping. The music store Vermouth had mentioned was located there.
However, the spot she pointed out to him was only one of the more suitable spots; if he had to choose, he would change it to…
He looked toward the spot he had predicted, only to see a shadow flash by in the window next to him.
There is someone.
The mission is almost over, and there are still people at the important sniping positions, which can only mean that Vermouth has arranged more than one sniper.
"Looks like you have more than just me on the list." Morobushi Kagemitsu parked his car in a nearby parking lot and found that the fee was even higher.
Vermouth didn't intend to explain further, nor did she think there was anything wrong with what she did. She simply praised him when the car came to a complete stop, saying, "Good eyesight." And that was the end of it.
This woman... It's a good thing Calvados is a love-struck fool, otherwise few snipers would tolerate her.
Morofushi Kagemitsu shook his head inwardly, but breathed a sigh of relief at the low compatibility between Vermouth and a sniper. If these criminals all cooperated closely, he would be the one with a headache.
[Anti-fraud expert #26: This is bad news. She moved the timeline forward a bit, and we're completely unprepared.]
Don't worry, the person can still be saved, we still have a chance.
[Anti-fraud expert #198: This woman is surrounded by rules; even our predictions about her are becoming uncertain.]
It seems that Vermouth will be our main focus of observation from now on.
["Vermouth" has been added to the watchlist]
In the short time he had already raised the alert level for Vermouth, this thousand-faced witch had personally increased her danger level by another star. She had completely changed; this woman had actually donned Gin's skin!
If he hadn't had enough self-control, he almost would have drawn his gun on the "Gin" sitting in the passenger seat.
As the thought of drawing his gun crossed his mind, a familiar, cold gaze swept over him, then left with a faint smell of tobacco.
Looking at the figure that was almost 100% similar to "Gin", Morofushi Kagemitsu slowly let out a breath.
[Anti-fraud expert #26: ...That one glance just now almost made me think Gin's soul had possessed her!]
[Anti-fraud expert #205: Her behavior has deviated again; this is the 34th time Vermouth's course of action has been altered.]
[Anti-fraud expert #198: I've compiled the data I've observed about this woman so far. In a way, she's my ideal test subject.]
[Anti-fraud expert #214: (Watching)]
[Anti-Fraud Guru #198: Stop launching data stream attacks against me. We're all in this together. What's the difference between this and slapping yourself in the face?]
[Anti-fraud expert #66: Okay, you two stop arguing. The most important thing right now is dealing with Vermouth.]
[Anti-fraud expert #148: Honestly, Jingguang, if you're going to fight her in close combat, you'd better go all out.]
Of course, he wouldn't underestimate the codenamed members within the organization.
Morobuchi Kagemitsu pulled out the car keys and walked in another direction.
[Anti-fraud expert #205: By the way, she was also carrying a hidden camera. We need to avoid that angle when we're doing our work.]
clear.
He skillfully evaded the surveillance cameras and walked towards the small building where the music store was located, glancing once more at the sniper spot where someone had been earlier.
[Anti-fraud expert #205: There's a person marking someone over there.]
It turned out to be someone I knew.
He thought about the few snipers in the action group who were currently able to get out and about, and their heights didn't match up.
Could it be... Ray?
[Anti-fraud expert #26: It's him!]
[Anti-fraud expert #19: That makes things much easier.]
That being said, I hadn't seen him for a while since the trip to Kyoto, and I never expected that our reunion would be for another mission from the organization.
To confirm his suspicions, he dialed Ray's cell phone number—a number he had specifically memorized after returning from Kyoto.
"You've arrived."
An old acquaintance greeted him immediately, indicating that the figure present was indeed him, and that he had been spotted in advance once again. This man truly was like a ghost.
Moribu Kagemitsu climbed the stairs, silently calculating the height of the floors, and said, "It really is you."
"Any ideas?" Lei asked more subtly this time.
19:32
Morofushi Kagemitsu glanced at the time again and asked, "When did she notify you to come?"
"This afternoon."
It seems likely that something happened in the morning or during the day that caused her to change her mind. Could it be the bombing? Or did she realize that someone was tracking the organization's test? Or perhaps, the reason for her sudden vigilance... was herself?
Morofushi Kagemitsu gathered his thoughts and briefly told Rai what he knew: "Vermouth suspects someone's identity and plans to set a trap for him today."
However, this trap should be set for tomorrow.
“Then he…” Ray asked.
Morofushi Kagemitsu didn't give a definitive answer. He pushed open the rooftop door, saw the black gun case placed to the side, and said, "According to my investigation, yes."
There was a moment of silence on Lei's end. While assembling the gun, Morofushi Kagemitsu patiently waited for a reply. He could almost picture him leaning against the wall, smoking and exhaling.
After a long pause, Lai only asked a few words:
"What should we do?"
Morofushi Hiromitsu adjusted his usual scope—Vermouth knew she couldn't let the sniper suffer by equipping him with this—and said, "She's not 100% sure of the other person's identity right now. So there will be a test, she'll probably say something unrelated before getting back to the main point. If possible, we might be able to warn that person before he steps into the trap."
Both snipers already knew the person's approximate coordinates and reminded him that all he needed to do was choose the right angle.
The difficulty lies in not revealing one's location or identity, ideally ensuring the other party is completely unaware that someone from the organization is helping them. After all, offering a helping hand to save someone is one thing, but exposing oneself in the process is quite another.
"Perhaps we can use the nearby police to create some chaos." Lai naturally didn't want to reveal his identity, so he thought of the group of Japanese police he had encountered before coming here.
“That would probably be hindered.” Morofushi Kagemitsu had considered this plan, but then he remembered his text message exchange with Hagiwara: “Because of restrictions on the flow of explosives in the market, the local police station will be holding an emergency meeting tonight. Too many police officers would be detrimental to us.”
Not wanting to get into trouble, Ray asked again, "Can you confirm which side he's on?"
Recalling what Vermouth had said in the report, Morofushi Hiromitsu guessed, "All I know is that he was probably suspected because of his involvement in that American operation."
After a two-second silence, Ray said, "Could the CIA be behind him?"
"I don't know." Morofushi Hiromitsu now knew it wasn't someone from the FBI. "However, that doesn't stop us from using our CIA identity to act."
"You mean?" Ray asked.
“Impersonate his contact,” Morofushi Kagemitsu proposed a bold idea.
"..." Lei seemed stunned by his idea and didn't respond for a moment.
"It's just providing him with information for now. Even if he finds out something's wrong later, he won't be able to find us." Morofushi Kagemitsu wanted to explain his thoughts in more detail, but then he saw a man in a black trench coat walk down the street and enter the small shop on the second floor where Vermouth was.
He used the scope like a telescope and saw the man take off his trench coat and pull out a playing card from his pocket—the Ace of Diamonds.
“It’s him,” Morobushi Kagemitsu said in a low voice.
So it was an Ace of Diamonds. It was probably a code Vermouth used to ask him to reveal his identity, or perhaps it was to help snipers pinpoint the location of the heart.
[Communication connection established with the other party]
Morofushi Hiromitsu glanced at Vermouth, who was dressed as Gin. According to the logic of her role, she probably wouldn't take her time like her original personality, but that might mean there wouldn't be much time.
He thought for a moment and said, "I'll hint to him that you keep an eye on Vermouth for me."
Lei said in a low voice, "...Okay."
The anti-fraud officer used the digital clock in the room to remind him. If he didn't notice, they used the left half of the billboard from the neighboring shop, away from the camera.
[Shop electronic system has been modified]
From his vantage point, he could only see the billboards, and things quickly changed. Seeing that the intrusion was going smoothly, he took out his backup phone, typed a text message below the receiver, and told Lai that he was operating it. He then had the anti-fraud team send it to Ace of Diamonds' email address.
The email contained only a time and place. If the recipient successfully survived today's ordeal, he would naturally go to gather intelligence; if he unfortunately failed here, the email would be secretly deleted by the anti-fraud team without leaving a trace.
Ace of Diamonds, I hope you survive.
Morofushi Kagemitsu looked at the man through the scope with a slight tension, especially when he saw Vermouth pointing her gun directly at the Ace of Diamonds, as if she was about to transform into Gin and empty the magazine.
Fortunately, it was another case of much ado about nothing. Just like Gin always fires cautiously at codenamed individuals, only to threaten them, this time Ace of Diamonds managed to save his life.
Of the four organizers present, three secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
The only one who was unhappy was probably Vermouth, who put on a grand show but gained nothing.
A smile finally appeared on Morobuchi Kagemitsu's face.
But this little bit of happiness was quickly ruined.
[Anti-fraud expert reminds you: Vermouth has sent you a text message!]
[Vermouth: Come downstairs and pick me up]
...Well, as a driver, he has to provide pick-up and drop-off services.
