Chapter 16
At 6:30 in the morning, the breakfast stalls were steaming with fried dough sticks, pancakes, and sauce cakes. The brighter it got, the more people came.
After coming out of the community, Lao Wang was about to buy some fried dough sticks. When he passed the sewer manhole cover, he smelled a foul odor. He covered his nose, frowned, and quickly walked to the side.
After walking a few steps, he felt something was wrong. He had never smelled this smell before. He had lived there for decades, and the sewer system occasionally had problems, but it had never been this smell.
He leaned closer, suppressing his nausea, and took a closer sniff. An indescribable stench was emanating from the gaps in the manhole cover.
His appearance attracted the attention of passers-by. An elderly woman who was about to buy steamed buns passed by and said, "It's been several days, and the stench is getting stronger. It wasn't like this before when it was blocked."
Old Li also felt that something was wrong. The smell was definitely not the smell of sour food, but he couldn't describe what it smelled like. It was a bit like rotten eggs, but when he smelled it again, it wasn't the smell.
He hesitated for a moment, but still called the police. What if something died inside? It would be even more troublesome if the traffic jam lasted too long.
A car with alternating blue and red lights passed by the oily ground. Several people in police uniforms got out of the car and quickly set up a cordon around the manhole cover.
Residents who had risen early gathered outside the cordon to peek in. A policeman squatted down and just as he lifted a corner of the manhole cover, a foul smell instantly came out.
He suddenly turned his face away and coughed. Lin Feng, the leader, frowned and motioned for the team members to get their tools: "Open it and take a look at it."
A man used a hook to grab the edge of the manhole cover and moved it away. The sewer was dark, and a layer of oily sheen floated on the surface of the water.
Someone reached down with a long-handled spoon and scooped up several irregular pieces with one scoop.
The meat was firm and definitely not pork or beef. No street vendor would just throw the meat away.
An old policeman came closer to Lin Feng and said in a very low voice, "This is probably a human body part."
Lin Tao stared at the pieces of meat and said, "These things must have flowed down the upstream pipeline. The food residue from the breakfast stall blocked the pipeline, so they didn't continue to flow downstream."
Two policemen in waterproof suits went down the ladder into the sewer. Holding searchlights, they carefully salvaged the body in the pipe, but they only found pieces of body in different sizes, the largest of which was only as big as a fist, but no bones were found.
"Captain Lin, there are no bones, it's all meat."
Lin Feng: "Check the directions of all pipelines upstream."
The news of the human flesh appearing in the morning market spread like wildfire, from mouth to mouth, and soon it spread throughout the neighborhood.
As the story spread, it became more and more bizarre. There were several victims, but one thing was certain: someone died.
The once bustling breakfast market stalls became deserted, with fewer people at the stalls and more people eating breakfast at other nearby shops.
The breakfast stall business had been bad for several days, and the police hadn't been able to find any information, probably because it was difficult to find. There were no bones, no identification information, only a pile of chopped-up body parts. This case was very difficult from the start.
After buying vegetables, Feifei passed by this breakfast stall. Originally, this was the most crowded place, but after this incident, all the vegetable sellers ran away, forcing her to ask for a morning market farther away, which was annoying.
She walked forward carrying the vegetables and saw a person on the road. She squinted her eyes. Something was wrong. How could the mystery be solved so quickly?
There was a knock on the door. Du Jiajia, who was sitting at the dining table eating strawberries, stood up and shouted as she walked away, "I'm coming, I'm coming, stop knocking."
She opened the door and sighed, "Can't you just come through?"
Feifei's mouth twitched as she walked into the room, saying, "Excuse me, check how many people are outside. Some are looking in from the nearby windows. I have to go door to door and erase their memories."
Du Jiajia closed the door and said, "I thought you could just wave your hand and it would be fine."
Feifei put the dishes on the table and looked back at her. "Not everyone is as stupid as you. They won't notice if they lose a day's memory."
"It seems your power is not that great."
"Don't be unhappy so early in the morning. Go to school quickly after eating."
Du Jiajia stepped forward, pinched a fried dough stick with one hand, grabbed the schoolbag next to the sofa with the other, and said to the two people reading on the sofa: "Let's go."
Feifei: "Let's go. If you don't leave now, you'll be late and you'll have to stand in the corner as punishment."
Du Jiajia said: "The teacher now turns a blind eye to me."
The door was pushed open and then closed. Feifei walked to the stool next to the tea table and sat down. She said, "Sir, there is a situation."
Lin An and Gu Yuan looked over at the same time. Fei Fei said, "I met someone this morning. He was glowing, but there was a faint blood glow around him."
Gu Yuan was puzzled: "Why is it entangled with blood?"
Lin An said calmly: "He killed someone."
Feifei continued, "Don't even think about this person's merits. If he kills someone, his merits will be stained with blood and will no longer be pure."
Gu Yuan said, "Is it related to the recent breakfast stall incident?"
Feifei: "Probably, and I guess he's coming for us."
Gu Yuan: "How can you be sure?"
Lin An spoke slowly: "Human nature is inherently evil, but most people don't have the opportunity to magnify it."
Feifei smiled: "I'm not sure, I'll know after a few more times."
Gu Yuan looked at Lin An: "Then are we still going to see it?"
Lin An: "Since they're coming for us, there's no reason not to go."
Things are becoming more and more complicated. The person behind this must be involved with the Divine Realm and have a deep connection with it. She wants to see who is behind this.
The old community once again welcomed distinguished visitors. When Lin An and the others approached, a gust of wind suddenly blew through the entire community, as if welcoming them.
The wind blew past them and they scattered, which was very strange. Gu Yuan was blown by the wind and thought, "It seems like it's really coming towards us."
Lin An: "Come in."
When they walked in, it looked normal again. There were old men playing chess together, some people were hanging quilts to dry, and a few old women were sitting at the door of the community building, looking at them, a few strangers. When they walked over, they started to discuss.
Gu Yuan: "How do I find it?"
Feifei: "If we turn around a few times, we might see it. If someone wants us to come, they must have left some clues."
They walked around the community and saw a wall. Feifei smiled and patted Gu Yuan.
Gu Yuan turned around and pointed. There were some big words written on the wall, "Here". The words were so big that they were particularly eye-catching, as if they had been waiting to be discovered.
