Mu Yi'an and her child lived a routine life at home. Two days before the Mid-Autumn Festival, after delivering the festival gifts, they sold a second batch of watermelons, and everyone was happy.
Jiang Shuyun, who was in the prefectural city, also met Steward Li and received the things her daughter-in-law had brought.
"Master, this package contains clothes, this package contains letters from Madam, the young master, and Miss, as well as some money that Madam asked you to bring. Master, these watermelons are for you to give to a teacher you know well."
Butler Li relayed the instructions from his wife, but Jiang Shuyun felt a pang of sadness; he missed Yi'an and the children.
"Come on, help me move these things inside. Li Li, I'm giving you a day off to spend with your father."
"Thank you, sir!"
The father and son thanked each other at the same time; they hadn't seen each other for over a month.
Jiang Shuyun let the Li family father and son leave, then took the watermelon that Yi'an had brought to a teacher she knew well, and hurried back to check the letter.
Yi'an's letters were filled with everyday stories, some happy, some angry, especially about Sister-in-law Jiang's bizarre actions, which she described with remarkable vividness. There was also Aunt Jiang and the Zhou family, who came and took away the watermelons from the old house, and even tried to buy some from her, but failed. They then went to other houses in the village, but no one would sell to them. In the end, Aunt Jiang only took the watermelons from the old house, and when she left, she reportedly looked very unwell…
After reading Yi An's letter, Jiang Shuyun had a lot of images flashing through his mind: himself sitting there, sometimes frowning, sometimes chuckling. Luckily, he was alone in the room, otherwise, he would have given people a fright!
Shao Ming wrote his own letter, and his handwriting has improved. He talked about his time at school and funny stories about his younger siblings. It was a full letter, and remarkably, there weren't a single typo! Impressive!
Another one is by Shao Yun. This kid can't write, so he drew on several sheets of paper, but you can still make out some shapes. Some are of him playing ball with his older brother and sister, and others are of him digging in an ant nest. Because he drew so many ants, it's quite unsettling. The last one, a chubby handprint, is Chu Yue's.
There was also a letter from my eldest sister, in which she talked about what had happened at home recently, thanked him and Yi'an for taking care of her, and promised to take good care of my second sister-in-law and the three children.
Looking at the letter and painting in front of her, Jiang Shuyun could almost feel the happy expression on her former colleague's face when he talked about his wife and children. This must be the meaning of human inheritance!
Jiang Shuyun savors the moments with his wife and children alone, while the Li family father and son express their longing after their separation.
"This was made by your mother. Madam said she was worried you'd miss home, so she asked your mother to make you more delicious food. And these clothes, your mother told you to change into them. Are you getting used to being at the academy with your husband?"
Butler Li took things out one by one. It was the child's first time going out with the master, and he was also very reluctant and worried.
“Father, don’t worry, I’m adapting quite well here, even better than before. Master has less to do and does most things himself. When Master is teaching, I’m in the dormitory, tidying up my things and even reading for a while. Master says I can read because reading makes one wise.”
Li Li truly enjoys his current life. Previously, the young master would sometimes punish them and take his anger out on them when he was in a bad mood, but the master wouldn't; he rarely lost his temper. Even if something went wrong, he wouldn't take it out on him.
"That's good. You stay with the master and serve him well. Don't worry about home. Your grandfather is now in charge of the watermelon patch and is full of energy. Your mother and younger siblings are also doing well. It's a blessing for us servants that the master has so little to do."
"I know, Dad. Don't worry, I will do my job well."
The father and son talked a lot and felt like they hadn't been this close in a long time.
Jiang Shuyun took out all the letters she had written during this period, as well as the small gifts she had collected for Yi'an, the children, and Jiang Qi, and asked Butler Li to take them back.
Li Li also prepared gifts for his family, and even wove many bamboo crafts for the young master and young lady, which were lifelike and vivid. This kid is skillful; he can even sew clothes!
Manager Li, carrying the things prepared by the master, went to the Mu family in the prefectural city. He was going to meet up with Uncle Wang and return to Xinyuan Town together, going home together.
Butler Li arrived home the day before the Mid-Autumn Festival. Mu Yi'an received a letter from Jiang Shuyun, along with a small gift he had prepared. Mu Yi'an and Jiang Qi, along with their three children, read the letter and learned about his life over the past month.
The children were overjoyed to receive the gifts from their father, holding them tightly in their hands, reluctant to put them down.
"Mother, when is Father coming back? I miss him."
"I want to, I want to..."
"I miss my dad too."
The three children were downcast again. They didn't quite understand the meaning of their father leaving home. All they knew was that their father hadn't told them stories in a long time, hadn't taught them to write characters, and hadn't played games with them...
"Waaah..."
Chuyue didn't quite understand what longing was, but the atmosphere was bad, so she started to cry, which made her two older brothers also have tears in their eyes.
"Alright, Daddy will be back during the New Year. Then we can go to the stream to catch fish and chase butterflies together, okay?"
"Yes, together."
Mu Yi'an and Jiang Qi exchanged glances; the child had stopped crying, and they breathed a sigh of relief. Shao Ming and the other two rarely cried, especially not together. Their sudden outburst today left them both shaken.
After coaxing them, they were allowed to play with Li Qiang in the yard. The bamboo weaving that Li Li brought back was very popular with the children. Li Qiang remembered his parents' instructions to keep an eye on the young master and young lady, and he and his sister also remembered it.
Mu Yi'an and Jiang Qi packed up the things Shu Yun had brought back, and were genuinely reluctant to go to the old house for the festival and dinner the next day.
