Chapter 124 Moving into the County Town

After everything was packed and loaded onto the vehicles, the Mu family's horse-drawn carriage, oxcart, and the old house's mule cart were all put into service.

The items were alright, but there weren't many.

There's no need to bring furniture, bedding, pots and pans; they'll come back to stay during holidays anyway.

Mu Yi'an only took the clothes they needed to wear, valuables from home, food, and the things accumulated from social interactions.

The sheep and chickens from home had all been sent to the estate in advance. In addition, two large boxes of things from Jiang Shuyun's study were packed up, all to be taken with her. After locking the door, Mu Yi'an looked at the home she had lived in for over a year, feeling a pang of reluctance.

"Shuyun's wife, don't worry, I'll help you find a good house."

"Thank you, Aunt. If you ever come to the county town, please come and visit us at home."

"Okay, I'll definitely need your help when I go to the county town in the future."

Mu Yi'an waved goodbye to her aunt and cousin-in-law. In the year or so she had been here, the people she got along with best were her aunt and cousin-in-law, and Li Qiuniang was also quite nice. She hadn't really had much contact with the others.

There were quite a few people going to the county town today: Third Grandfather, Jiang's parents, Uncle Wang, Brother Jiang's family, Jiang Shuwen went to work, and Li Qiuniang took her two children and decided to visit her parents' home for a few days.

Mu Yi'an's family didn't come today; they plan to come in a couple of days, otherwise there will be too many people.

The carriage travels a good distance of twenty li (approximately 10 kilometers).

Steward Li led the way in his car, followed by Uncle Wang. Uncle Li and Jiang Shuqi drove the oxcart and mule cart, which were carrying goods.

"We've arrived, this is the place."

Jiang Shuyun carried the rice jar in first, and then went through the process one by one. After the moving ceremony ended, everyone followed her in.

Sister-in-law Li and Sister-in-law Fang arrived yesterday with their children, but they didn't go into the main house. Sister-in-law Li and her family stayed in the gatehouse, while Sister-in-law Fang and her daughter stayed in the back room, both of which were quite spacious.

So, I boiled water in advance this morning so I could make tea for my guests.

"Second sister-in-law, your house must have been expensive, right?"

"Sister-in-law, it's not cheap, five hundred taels!"

"How much? Five hundred taels?"

Jiang's sister-in-law was so shocked that she couldn't close her mouth for a long time, and even Jiang Lan's eyes widened.

In their minds, several dozen taels was already a lot; Mu Yi'an's dowry was quite generous, the largest in the surrounding villages. However, her dowry at that time consisted mostly of land and other possessions, with only a few dozen taels of silver as her dowry.

Therefore, the five hundred taels were absent from their understanding.

“Sister-in-law, this is a county town. If it were a prefectural city or the capital, a house this big would cost several thousand taels of silver.”

Mu Yi'an was not lying; living in the capital is not easy, it has always been so.

Jiang Da Sao and Jiang Lan fell silent; they were stunned.

Jiang's mother was also quite surprised, but she didn't show it. After all, experience counts.

Jiang's father did know a bit about this street. The families living there were all wealthy and powerful, not ordinary people. Shao Ming and his group would come into contact with people from different social strata here, especially the Wan Juan Academy, which was a very influential place.

Jiang Shuyun invited her third grandfather and his father, and her eldest brother to have some tea. She said the tea was quite good, a gift from Master Wei.

The main house has six rooms. The two rooms on the east side are Mu Yi'an and Jiang Shuyun's bedrooms and a small flower hall, which can be used to entertain female relatives. The third and fourth rooms are the dining room and living room, and also where male guests are entertained. These two rooms have separate doors, unlike the rooms on the east and west sides. The two rooms on the west side are shared by Jiang Qi and Chu Yue, and Shao Yun and Shao Ming. The children are still young. When they are a little older, Shao Yun and Shao Ming will move to the side rooms, and then Chu Yue can live separately from her aunt.

Looking at the room her second daughter-in-law had prepared for Jiang Qi, Jiang's mother felt much better. No matter what, her second daughter-in-law was genuinely good to her divorced sister-in-law, something even her own parents couldn't do.

Jiang Da Sao carefully inspected the house inside and out. A house costing five hundred taels of silver was extremely precious. She had never seen five hundred taels of silver in her entire life. It must have been a huge pile!

It's heartbreaking to think about it. Their eldest branch, with its eldest son and grandson, should be the most honored, but now, all eyes are on Jiang Shuyun and her second branch. Their glory has been completely obscured!

"Sister-in-law, what are you thinking about?"

Jiang Lan moved closer to her sister-in-law and nudged her, asking why she was still lost in thought.

“Little sister-in-law, look, my second sister-in-law’s life has changed dramatically, far beyond what we can compare to. This house, the furnishings, all these servants, this…”

Sister-in-law Jiang couldn't continue speaking; she felt a deep sadness in her heart.

"Sister-in-law..."

Jiang Lan didn't know what to say. Everything had changed so quickly that she was at a loss. Without realizing it, she had completely offended her second sister-in-law, and her second brother was no longer as supportive of her as before.

Unaware of their inner turmoil, Mu Yi'an was quite satisfied with her new home. The layout had been slightly altered, but not drastically, so it didn't feel out of place. It evoked a sense of novelty or unease, prompting people to explore further.

Li and Fang, the wives of Mu Yi'an, manage the household very well. Both of them are capable and save Mu Yi'an a lot of trouble.

We were going to stay for lunch, so Sister Li prepared a menu. After Mu Yi'an looked at it, she made some minor changes, replacing a few dishes that Jiang's mother liked, and keeping the rest as Sister Li had ordered.

Lunch was a lavish affair, with some people enjoying it immensely while others found it utterly tasteless.

After lunch, Steward Wang drove the carriage and took Jiang's father and the others back.

“Mom, my cousin Shao Qin said he envies me because I have such a nice house to live in and people call me young master.”
