Mu Yi'an muttered something to herself but didn't take it seriously.
Putting everything else aside, the Mu family has moved in, and her eldest and second brothers have made a good impression on the county magistrate. This year, they might both see some progress. Aunt Jiang, being a shrewd and worldly person, surely knows this. If she wants to lecture her, she'll have to see if the Mu family agrees first.
This is a woman's source of confidence: having a strong family to rely on, and most importantly, that family loves and protects her.
When Aunt Jiang returned home, her face was extremely pale. Her second son and his wife, along with her youngest daughter, were at home and had no idea what had happened to make their mother look so bad.
"Mother, what's wrong? Doesn't my second cousin agree?"
Du Mei poured her mother a glass of water to soothe her throat.
"We didn't see my cousin, only his wife was there, and she barely acknowledged us. The watermelon thing didn't work out, and the Wanjuan Academy thing was also met with procrastination. Nothing got done."
Du's eldest daughter-in-law was also furious; she went there only to be met with indifference.
"How dare my second cousin-in-law treat my mother like this? She's so petty. Has she forgotten how we treated my uncle's family before?"
Du Mei was very unhappy. Jiang Lan had been very obsequious to her when she visited their home before.
"Mother, I heard that my cousin's second brother is now highly regarded by the county magistrate, and his eldest brother's watermelons have also caught the county magistrate's eye. It seems that he wants to promote watermelon cultivation throughout the entire Xinyuan County."
Among the classmates of the second son of the Du family, there was one whose family worked as a clerk in the county government. They mentioned it when they were chatting, but the topic was later changed, and they didn't talk about it anymore.
Aunt Jiang had a headache. She waved her hand, dismissing them all, and said she needed to think things over carefully.
When Jiang Shuyun returned home, he heard that his aunt had come by. He had the same reaction as Mu Yi'an: "She wouldn't come unless she had a reason." He wouldn't pay any attention to her.
Neither the couple took Aunt Jiang seriously and started talking about Shao Ming's schooling.
