Suddenly, a woman with disheveled hair burst into the courtyard, dragging a girl who looked to be ten or so in her hand, shouting for Mu Yi'an to save her.
The incident happened suddenly, and everyone was startled.
"Who are you? Why are you barging in like this? You're frightening the elderly and children."
Mu Yi'an was a little annoyed and gestured for Jiang Qi to take the two children inside.
"Shushan's wife, what are you doing?"
Jiang's mother recognized the woman; she was Jiang Shushan's wife.
"Auntie, I have no choice. That bastard Jiang Shushan lost money gambling and gave my girl away as collateral. Now, they've come to take her back. I have no other option but to beg Shuyun's wife for help. Please lend me some money. I can't let them take my girl away!"
"Jiang Shushan went gambling again?"
Jiang's mother did not expect that Jiang Shushan would not change his ways. He lost the bet last time, and the clan had already issued a final notice that if he did not change, he would be expelled from the clan.
"Auntie, sob sob..."
The woman was crying uncontrollably and couldn't speak. Jiang's father and Jiang Shuyun also came out of the study.
"Zhonglin, go and find your third grandfather and great-grandfather."
Jiang's father looked at the people coming from the outside of the courtyard. This matter required his third uncle and the others to step in.
"Jiang Shushan is a dog that can't change its nature. He went gambling again. We shouldn't have let him off the hook last time."
"How heartless! His daughter is so capable, how could he be so cruel? If she were taken away by the debt collectors, what good would happen to her?"
"Isn't it that Shuyun's family is back? They have money, so let's lend them some, and that will solve the problem, right?"
"So what if someone has money? Does having money mean we should lend it to that gambler?"
...
A crowd of onlookers gathered outside the Jiang family's old residence. They came from all sorts of families, and it was impossible to tell whether they were from the Jiang, Lin, or Wang families, or other families with different surnames.
Mu Yi'an stood there, listening to everyone's discussion. She felt as if the boot had finally dropped; they had finally come knocking.
Since she bought the estate and put the shop business out in the open, Mu Yi'an felt that sooner or later, people from the village who wanted to borrow money would come to her door.
And now that she's actually here, she can publicly state her position so that no one keeps keeping an eye on her.
