Evening, in the backyard of Yuanshengtang Medical Clinic.
After finishing his meal, Dr. Chu was helping his daughter practice calligraphy.
"Dad, I really like the auntie today. Can she be my mother?"
Chu Anran looked completely innocent; she had no idea how surprising her words were.
"Anran, today's auntie cannot be your mother."
"Why?"
The little girl put down her pen, tilted her head back, and looked puzzled.
"Because Auntie has her own home and can't come to our house, you can't say things like that anymore, understand?"
"knew."
The little girl lowered her head; she was a little sad.
Dr. Chu stroked his daughter's head, offering silent comfort. His wife had suffered a difficult childbirth, and her already weak body succumbed to the illness after two years.
He was a gynecologist, but sometimes, that feeling of helplessness was disheartening.
"Alright, it's time to go to sleep."
Doctor Chu called his daughter's wet nurse and asked her to take Anran to bed.
Goodnight, Dad!
The little girl was very well-behaved; although she was sad, she didn't forget to say goodnight to her father.
Dr. Chu sat alone at his desk, recalling his daughter's words about that aunt. She had a woman's hairstyle and appeared to be in her early twenties. She had been accompanying the old lady to her doctor's appointments lately, and he couldn't tell if she was her mother or mother-in-law.
What are you thinking about?
Dr. Chu shook his head; he had been influenced by his daughter's words and was thinking about things he shouldn't have.
For the past two years, Anran has longed for a mother, but there aren't many people she can be close to.
His daughter is very sensitive, and he doesn't want his new wife to treat her badly. He doesn't expect her to treat Anran like her own daughter—that's unrealistic. But there aren't many people who can genuinely treat Anran like a younger generation and properly accompany her as she grows up.
When he was in the prefectural city, his teacher's wife also tried to arrange things for him, but none of them worked out.
Later, he came to Xinyuan County, his hometown and the burial place of his parents.
Rubbing his temples, Doctor Chu decided it was time to go to bed.
A few more days passed, and Jiang's mother's health improved significantly.
That day, Dr. Chu went to the clinic to see patients as usual.
Jiang Qi accompanied her mother to the acupuncture clinic. Since her mother was feeling much better, Jiang Qi didn't let Fang's sister-in-law come along, but instead had her stay home to keep her company.
There's been a lot going on at the shop lately, and my second sister-in-law is also very busy. Without Sister Fang by her side, many things are inconvenient.
Wei Yunduo wanted to stay with Chu Yue, so Jiang Qi didn't let her come along. There was a driver to pick them up and drop them off, so they didn't need so many people.
After the acupuncture treatment, Jiang's mother thought about what Shuheng's father had said and decided to find an opportunity to ask Doctor Chu how her son, Jiang Qi, was doing.
After the female doctor removed the needles, Jiang's mother came out and glanced around. There weren't many patients today, and Doctor Chu was free, with no patients.
"Jiang Qi, go buy me some fruit, I have no taste in my mouth."
Jiang Qi didn't think much of it; there were fruit vendors not far from here.
Jiang's mother dismissed her daughter and walked towards Doctor Chu.
"Grandma, what's wrong?"
"Dr. Chu, I want to ask you something. My daughter, the one who just left, has been married for several years but hasn't had a child. She's seen doctors and taken medicine, but nothing works. My second daughter-in-law says it might be a problem with the man. Is that true?"
Jiang's mother was eager to know about her daughter's health condition and did not hide anything from the doctor.
"That's also possible. It's best for both of them to see a doctor to find out whose problem it is."
"They're divorced, so there's no way they could come together to see it."
Jiang's mother muttered something, feeling a tightness in her chest as she thought about what the Fan family had done.
Dr. Chu had excellent hearing; he heard what Jiang's mother mumbled. He was completely surprised that his daughter's beloved aunt had divorced; he hadn't noticed at all.
"Madam, if it's convenient, I can take a look at your daughter. If there's nothing wrong with her health, then either the problem lies with the man, or the two of them are simply incompatible."
Dr. Chu's mentor once told me about a couple who were both healthy but couldn't have children. Later, they separated, remarried, and had children of their own.
"Okay, okay, I just want to know if my daughter has any health problems. If she's healthy and can have children, then there's nothing to worry about."
Jiang's mother was very excited; she trusted Dr. Chu's medical skills. When Jiang Qi came in carrying the fruit, she saw her mother sitting in front of Dr. Chu's desk, waving eagerly at her.
"Mom, what's wrong? I bought the fruit."
"Qiqi, let Doctor Chu take your pulse. No matter what the result is, I'll feel at ease."
"I know, I'm sorry to have worried you, Mother."
Jiang Qi understood what her mother meant. Her parents had always been worried about the fact that the Fan family had told her she couldn't have children.
Doctor Chu gestured for Jiang Qi to sit down and placed her hand on the pulse pillow.
Jiang Qi did as instructed. She also wanted to know if she really couldn't have children.
Doctor Chu sat upright, took turns feeling the pulse of Jiang Qi's two hands, and asked her some questions.
"Grandma, judging from your daughter's pulse, she is in good health and there is nothing wrong with her."
Dr. Chu didn't know what previous doctors had said, but after examining the old lady's daughter with his eyes, ears, nose, and palpation, he determined that she had no problems.
"Dr. Chu, is what you're saying true? My daughter is healthy and can have children?"
"Yes, no problem."
Tears streamed down Jiang's mother's face. "Damn the Fan family! Saying that her daughter has problems is so despicable!"
"Dr. Chu, I'm sorry, my mother is a little agitated."
Jiang Qi took a handkerchief and wiped away her mother's tears; her mother was holding back her anger.
