Chapter 160 Narrative at the Jiang Family Old House

Jiang Lan's tears were worthless, at least that's what she thought.

I wonder how much of Jiang's father's good intentions she could understand.

Aunt Jiang felt that her eldest brother didn't take her seriously and allowed the younger generation to disrespect her. She didn't even eat her meal and angrily told the driver to drive home.

Jiang's father glanced at the sky outside and realized that they could enter the city before the city gates closed, so he didn't stop them.

Mu Yi'an was hungry; she had been busy all day and hadn't even had a proper meal.

Jiang Shuyun already knew his wife very well, so he quickly served her a lot of food.

He had figured out An's temper; he would get upset when he was hungry.

The others ate in silence, accompanied by Jiang Lan's occasional sobs.

After dinner, Mu Yi'an packed her things and took the child home first.

The Jiang family father and sons went to the study. Having not seen each other for many days, they had to catch up on each other's recent situations.

"Shuheng, Shuyun, the provincial examination is next year. How are your preparations going? Has the teacher said anything to you lately?"

“Dad, the teacher at our county school said that with my grades, it will be difficult for me to make the list. I know there’s not much hope, but I still want to give it a try.”

Brother Jiang knew in his heart that there was little hope for him given his skill level.

However, he was unwilling to give up after studying all that time without taking an exam.

"Okay, do your best, but don't get stuck on the details. How's Shao Qin? You've been mentoring him for a year, how's he doing?"

"His temperament has softened a bit, but he still lacks perseverance. I'm thinking, should I find him a school in town or county to study seriously for a few years?"

Brother Jiang was at a loss; Shao Qin lacked understanding and couldn't endure hardship.

"A county town is fine too. Find a teacher with good character who is strict. Even if the child doesn't excel academically, his character must remain intact. Visit him often; he's your own child."

"I understand, Father. A classmate from the county school recommended a school. The teacher is a scholar with a good reputation. The school provides room and board, and students get one day off every ten days."

Brother Jiang himself went to investigate, and the Master's character is highly regarded in the area.

"Okay, you can decide for yourself. What about Shuyun? How about you? Is there any hope?"

"Father, I'm not absolutely certain, but I still have a 60-70% chance."

Jiang Shuyun wasn't exaggerating. During his year at Bailu Academy, he truly experienced the difficulty of the ancient imperial examinations.

Thinking back to Fan Jin passing the imperial examination, I used to find it laughable and impossible. But after experiencing it myself, I understand the feeling.

He had been too arrogant, thinking that he could pass the imperial examination at home and become a scholar, and that he could just take the exam again if necessary.

That's not actually the case at all; he's learned that lesson the hard way this time.

"Sixty or seventy percent is not bad. Who can be absolutely certain? In the imperial examination, grades are one aspect, but luck is sometimes also crucial."

Jiang's father had heard of it all before; many good students and talented individuals failed the provincial examinations. Each time there was a provincial examination, how many people took it, and how many were actually admitted?

After talking about the two older sons, Jiang's father looked at his younger son. The younger son not only looked like his maternal uncle's family, but also shared their dislike of studying.

"Dad, I'm planning to move to the county town."

"If we move to the county town, will your third daughter-in-law be able to manage raising two children alone, and you're often away from home?"

Jiang's father was also worried that his third daughter-in-law would be in danger if she stayed at home alone.

“I quit my job at the trading company and bought a courtyard with a shop in the county town. I plan to open a food shop.”

"If you were to open your own shop selling food, what would you plan to sell?"

Jiang's father knew that his youngest son had gained some experience after being away for several years.

He couldn't think of what a food stall could sell.

"The shop is opened with my second sister-in-law. She has the recipe, and I am in charge of managing it."

Jiang Shuwen didn't hide anything; her second sister-in-law said it was okay.

"With your second sister-in-law?"

Jiang's father turned to Shuyun and asked him if he knew.

“I heard some things from Yi-an. She saw some recipes in a book and tried them at home. They tasted good and weren’t expensive.”

It just so happened that Shuwen asked about opening a shop, so they thought about opening a shop together. Yi'an didn't have the time, nor was it convenient for her to open a shop on her own.

Jiang Shuyun knew that Yi'an still liked farming and enjoyed tinkering with the fields.

“Your second sister-in-law is shrewd and calculating. You should do a good job. Even close brothers should keep clear accounts. When working together, your second sister-in-law trusts you, and you must live up to that trust.”

“Father, I know. I can’t let money ruin our brotherhood.”

Jiang Shuwen knew what his father meant: he was not allowed to falsify the accounts.

"It's good that you understand. I don't want you to go astray." After saying that, I looked at Jiang Shuheng.

“Shuheng, after Shaoqin goes to school, he will have one day off every ten days. You should also come back for one day. There are still three children at home, and they need their father. Also, talk to your eldest daughter-in-law and tell her to treat the children as fairly as possible.”

"Father, I understand."

Brother Jiang felt his face burning because of what had happened in his own room; he felt ashamed to face his two younger brothers.

Jiang's father then spoke with his three sons about the discipline of their children.

In the inner room of Jiang's parents' house, Jiang's mother was holding Jiang Qi's hand, talking about some things.

"Qiqi, now that the marriage is settled, your father and I can finally relax."

Madam Chu is a good choice; her family is small and there are no elders. After marriage, you can be in charge of your own household, which will save you a lot of trouble.

"My mother has been through it all; she was once a daughter-in-law, and now she's a mother-in-law."

Jiang's mother touched her daughter's head and exclaimed in surprise, "My child has grown so much!"

I was both reluctant and happy to send her off on her marriage, hoping that she would get pregnant and give birth, and gain a foothold in her husband's family.
