Sister Fang arrived with the doctor. Mu Yi'an was very nervous and held Jiang Shuyun's hand tightly, not letting go.
"Madam, relax a bit."
The doctor took out a pulse pillow and placed it on the table.
"Place your right hand on the pulse pillow, take a deep breath, and exhale slowly."
Mu Yi'an did as instructed, slowly relaxing and leaning against Jiang Shuyun.
"Very good, I will begin taking your pulse."
The doctor placed his hand on Mu Yi'an's pulse. The room was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.
"Okay, switch to the other hand."
The doctor's face was expressionless, revealing nothing about the situation.
"Congratulations, madam, it's a happy pulse!"
"A pregnancy test?"
Mu Yi'an was momentarily stunned. What did "pregnancy pulse" mean?
"Doctor, how many months pregnant? How is my wife's health?"
Jiang Shuyun understood; she really was pregnant.
"It's been more than two months, almost three months. The pulse is steady and strong, which is very good."
The doctor hesitated for a moment, there was something he didn't say, but it wasn't clear yet, he would say it later.
Mu Yi'an was completely stunned, her shoulders slumped, and she sat there without reacting.
Jiang Shuyun saw the doctor off at the door; he had something to ask.
"Doctor, will my wife be in danger during childbirth given her condition?"
"It's hard to say. Everything looks fine now, but with childbirth, no one can predict the future."
Even doctors aren't entirely confident. Childbirth is a life-or-death experience for women, and sometimes even doctors are powerless to help.
"Doctor, is it dangerous to give up now?"
Jiang Shuyun was afraid; he couldn't let Yi'an be at any risk.
"Give up? You mean abortion?"
"Um."
The doctor looked surprised; this was the first time he had encountered such a situation—the man, fearing the dangers of childbirth, had voluntarily given up the child.
"To be honest, your wife is almost three months pregnant now. At this time, taking abortion medication is no less dangerous than childbirth."
The doctor didn't approve. It was a little better when the pregnancy was early, but it's already three months along.
"Thank you, doctor. We'll think about it."
After seeing the doctor off, Jiang Shuyun returned to her room.
"Shuyun, what did the doctor say?"
Mu Yi'an dismissed everyone else and sat cross-legged on the tatami mat, her feelings somewhat complicated.
"The doctor said that childbirth carries certain risks, but at this stage of pregnancy, the risks of abortion are no less than those of childbirth."
Jiang Shuyun was also anxious. How could this have happened so unexpectedly? They had been very careful.
"Forget it, let's try two more clinics tomorrow. If they both say the same thing, we'll just accept it!"
Mu Yi'an has recovered. Although the pregnancy was unexpected, it has already happened. Instead of being anxious, she might as well face it directly. If the sky falls, there are always taller people to hold it up.
The two went to bed with mixed feelings. "Shuyun, according to the doctor's advice, when did we become negligent?"
"It's been almost three months. It's August now, so it must have been around May. Was it that time?"
Which time?
Mu Yi'an didn't quite catch on; throughout May, they had shared a room many times.
"That's right, there was a time when we were both really into it. It was the day before you went to see the shop, and I felt like I'd forgotten something. I was so excited that I think I put the tadpoles in there."
Jiang Shuyun felt she had figured out the truth; Mu Yi'an couldn't remember anything.
"Forget it, I don't want to think about it anymore. It's a fait accompli, and we have no choice but to accept it."
Mu Yi'an's biggest takeaway from working for so many years in her previous life was learning to avoid internal conflict.
"That's true. To be honest, if I weren't worried about your safety, I would really like to see what you look like when you're pregnant."
I want to feel my baby growing inside me, to feel the legendary fetal movements. I want to see if all newborns look like monkeys!
Jiang Shuyun held Yi'an tightly. He refused to trade those beautiful memories for Yi'an's safety.
In his heart, Yi'an is one, and everything else is zero. If the one is gone, there's no point in having so many zeros.
"Relax, we'll see the doctor tomorrow."
Mu Yi'an shared the same thoughts; she had been a mother for over three years and no longer resisted having children.
She wasn't against having children; she was just afraid of the dangers of childbirth.
The next day, Jiang Shuyun asked Wei Dong to ask for leave from the academy, while he and Yi An went to the clinic, the clinic of Doctor Chu's master.
Last night, after consulting the doctor, Mu Yi'an instructed that she not to reveal her pregnancy yet. She was afraid that if Jiang's parents found out, things would become more complicated.
Before they came to the prefectural city, Doctor Chu gave Mu Yi'an the address of his master's clinic and specially asked them to send some things to his master and mistress, so that his brother-in-law could go and familiarize himself with the place and have someone to look after him if anything happened.
Mu Yi'an's unexpected pregnancy has left them at a loss; whether to keep the baby or not, both options pose risks.
Wei San drove the carriage smoothly to Master Chu's clinic, Wanbaotang.
"Sir, would you like to pick up some medicine or have a medical consultation?"
The young apprentice asked gently, with a very good attitude.
"Is it convenient for us to see Dr. Wan now?"
The young apprentice was taken aback; his master rarely saw patients anymore.
"Oh my, isn't this Nan Sheng's brother-in-law?"
The people coming out greeted him warmly. He had attended his junior's wedding and knew the bride's second brother and sister-in-law.
"Hello, Senior Brother Fang, sorry to bother you."
Jiang Shuyun recognized him as Doctor Chu's senior brother, who had been to Xinyuan County.
