Chapter 36 Rice Seed Preservation

"I hope my parents-in-law are well!"

"Shuyun is here. What's up?"

The Mu family parents found it a bit strange; at this hour?

“Yi’an had seen some information about saving seeds from crops in an agricultural book, so he asked me to come and tell my brother-in-law about it.”

"What's the significance of preserving offspring?"

Brother Mu perked up; the seeds were of utmost importance.

"The book says to select the plumpest rice ears, cut them off, dry them separately, and store them for use as seeds the following year. If you do this repeatedly, the quality of the seeds will change over the next few years."

Jiang Shuyun relayed Mu Yi'an's words, but he didn't quite understand them either, having never been involved in such matters before.

"Hmm, you know what, that makes some sense. I'll give it a try; the rice at home hasn't been harvested yet."

Brother Mu thought about it for a moment and felt it made sense. In previous years, his family would also select the plumpest rice stalks for seed, but they were all mixed together, which wasn't as good as selecting them individually like this.

"Brother, you can give it a try. See how the output is next year and compare. This is our first time doing this too, so whether it will be effective or not depends on next year's output."

"That makes sense. Nobody has tried it before, so we'll only know how it will turn out after we try it. It definitely won't be lower than the original output, that's for sure."

By the way, Yi'an said she'd plant watermelons, has she decided yet?

Brother Mu remembered what Yi'an had mentioned about growing watermelons, so he quickly asked about it.

"I plan to try planting some next year. I also asked the teacher at the county school, and he knows that watermelon seeds are sold in the prefectural city if they can be planted in dry land. Next spring, my elder brother can come with us to the prefectural city to take a look."

"Okay, it's settled then. Let's go together next spring."

Brother Mu felt it would be better to have someone accompany him, so we'll leave it at that for now.

Jiang Shuyun had to go to the butcher shop in town, so she didn't linger and left quickly.

Knowing he had business in town, the Mu family didn't invite him to stay for a meal. Instead, they took half a bag of apples to take back for the child.

Jiang Shuyun carried the apples, bought several pounds of pork in town, and when she returned to Jiangjia Village, she felt like her arms were about to break. The journey was long and arduous, and the load grew heavier with each step.

After delivering the meat to Uncle Jiang's house, he hurried home.
