Chapter 42 Wanting to Confide

On a bright, cloudless morning, Mu Yi'an woke up. She stretched, moved her body a bit, and went outside.

Jiang Shuyun woke up when Mu Yi'an did, but the morning physiological reaction made him a little embarrassed. After calming himself down for a moment, he quickly got dressed and went to the toilet to relieve himself.

In the kitchen, Mu Yi'an had already started cooking the porridge. The firewood in the stove was burning brightly, so she didn't need to watch it. She took a basket and went to the vegetable garden.

A new batch of vegetables has sprouted, lush and green, looking very appetizing.

Mu Yi'an was making vegetable pancakes this morning, so she picked out two kinds of side dishes, both still covered in dew.

"Yi'an, what's for breakfast?"

Jiang Shuyun came out of the restroom and saw Mu Yi'an carrying a basket of vegetables. She was quite curious: would he eat all of these vegetables in one meal?

"Make vegetable pancakes. This batch of vegetables is growing very well, and it's just the right time to eat them."

"There's still dew on them, they look so fresh. Would you like me to help you wash the vegetables?"

Jiang Shuyun knew how tedious these chores were every day, and he wanted to help as much as possible to make Yi'an feel more at ease and let her know that he was always there for her.

"Then you go wash the vegetables, I'll go make the batter."

Mu Yi'an happily handed the basket to Jiang Shuyun; her companion was quite good.

Mu Yi prepared the paste, and Jiang Shuyun had already washed the vegetables.

"Go and exercise, I'll take care of the rest."

"Okay, just call me if you need anything. I'll go milk the goats after I finish exercising, so you don't need to worry about it."

"Okay, I'm going to make pancakes now, you go ahead and get busy."

The two separated and went about their own business.

Jiang Qi and Jiang Lan shared a room at night. Since there were limited rooms in the house, the sisters had always slept in the same room until Jiang Qi got married, after which the room became Jiang Lan's alone.

"Sis, you're up so early? It'll be a while before we eat."

Jiang Lan looked at her sister getting dressed and muttered something.

"It's okay, I'm awake now, you can sleep a little longer."

Jiang Qi quietly walked out of the room, just as Jiang Shuyun in the courtyard finished her last action.

"Second Brother, good morning! What are you practicing?"

"Good morning. This is the Eight-Section Brocade exercise I learned from my classmates at the county school. It's for physical fitness. Last time, I was completely exhausted after the provincial examination. You can't succeed in the imperial examinations if you don't have the physical strength."

Although Jiang Shuyun did not experience it firsthand, the sense of powerlessness she felt was still very clear in her memory.

"That's true. No matter what you do, having good health is very important. Second brother, I'll go to the kitchen to check on second sister-in-law."

“Go ahead, your second sister-in-law said she’s making vegetable pancakes for breakfast, I can already smell the aroma.”

It's true, Jiang Shuyun's stomach was rumbling as she smelled the aroma of the food.

When Jiang Qi came back this time, she felt that her second brother and sister-in-law had become a little different, but she couldn't quite put her finger on what was different.

"Second sister-in-law, is there anything I can do?"

"Jiang Qi, you're up? Why didn't you sleep a little longer?"

"I woke up on time. I slept very well last night and feel great today. Second brother was right, second sister-in-law's vegetable pancakes are delicious!"

"Really? The new batch of vegetables is just right, with a unique fresh sweetness."

The vegetables at this time are truly organic, free from pesticides, fertilizers, and air pollution.

"Jiang Qi, could you serve me the porridge? Let it cool for a while, then Mom and Dad should be up, and we can eat."

"Understood, Second Sister-in-law."

Jiang Qi went to get some porridge in a cheerful mood and chatted with her second sister-in-law for a while, which made her feel much more relaxed.

After everyone came out, Mu Yi'an and Jiang Qi had already set out the food.

"Jiang Qi, if there's nothing else going on at your in-laws' house, stay home a little longer."

"Understood, Father."

As Jiang Qi listened to her father's words, she felt a surge of heat rush to her eyes, but she held back her tears. She had a family, parents, and brothers.

After breakfast, Mu Yi'an tidied up the children, asked her mother-in-law to look after them, and gave each child an apple to eat slowly.

Shao Ming and Shao Yun had already shared one in the morning, and even Chu Yue had eaten two bites of apple puree.

Mu Yi'an delivered the fruit and snacks that had been distributed yesterday to Jiang's mother. As for who ended up eating them, that was none of her business.

"Second sister-in-law, are you going up the mountain?"

Jiang Qi knew that the family raised ewes. In the morning, her mother insisted that she drink a bowl of goat milk, also mentioning that her sister-in-law and brother's wife had bought the goat with their own money to milk the ewes for their children. Her sister-in-law and brother's wife also brought the elderly couple two bowls of milk every day to help them recover.

"Yes, go cut grass for the sheep."

Can I come with you?

"Alright, let's go. Third sister-in-law, you stay home and watch the bone stew for me. Simmer it on low heat all morning, and then buy some tofu to put in at noon. It will taste good."

Mu Yi'an knew that Jiang Qi wanted to get away for a while, just like when she first arrived, she would take a walk in the mountains, which made her feel much better.

"Okay, Second Sister-in-law, I'll go buy the tofu later, so we don't run out at lunchtime."

"Then I'll trouble you, sister-in-law. Buy four pieces of tofu, and I've also soaked some seaweed."

Mu Yi'an casually gave Li Qiuniang a few copper coins, enough for four pieces of tofu.

Jiang Qi told her mother, then carried her basket and went up the mountain with Mu Yi'an.

"Second sister-in-law, do you find it hard? You have to do housework, take care of the children, and go up the mountain to cut grass for the sheep?"

Jiang Qi knew that her second sister-in-law's family owned a lot of land, were well-off, and had servants.

"It's definitely hard work, but what isn't hard work? At least there aren't too many things to do at home, and my parents are easy to get along with. Physical fatigue is better than mental fatigue."

Mu Yi'an knew that Jiang Qi wanted to confide in her, but she didn't understand why she wanted to talk to her.
