Chapter 44 The Decision of Jiang's Parents

After Mu Yi'an woke up, she changed the child's clothes, helped her urinate, and took her to the yard for some fresh air.

"Dad, I need to pee, I need to pee..."

Shao Yun's daily routine: after waking up from his afternoon nap, he hurriedly calls for his father, unable to hold it in any longer.

He used to call her "Mom," but after that, every time he called her that, it was his father who came. After that, he stopped calling her "Mom" and just called her "Dad."

Jiang Shuyun quickly picked up Shao Yun and took him to the toilet. Now, he has practiced very well and can do a good job of the basic operations of childcare, such as washing the child, changing his diaper, dressing him, and feeding him.

Let Jiang Shuyun look after the child for a while, and he should also take care of himself and not read all the time.

Inside the main room, Jiang's mother looked at Jiang Qi, unsure of where to begin her question.

"Mother, I'll tell you when Father comes home tonight."

"Okay, wait for your father to come back. Child, you must know that this is your mother's home. No matter what happens, don't be afraid or have any worries. You will always have a safe place at home."

Jiang's mother stroked Jiang Qi's hair. This child has had a very hard life all these years of marriage.

"I understand, Mother, I, I..."

Jiang Qi threw herself into her mother's arms, tears falling silently.

"Alright, alright, I know what's troubling you. Don't be afraid, I'm here for you, and your parents are here for you."

Jiang's mother's eyes also reddened. Her heartache was no less than Jiang Qi's. This was her own flesh and blood, and it hurt her even more if she was not doing well.

Jiang Qi talked with her mother for a while and felt much better. She wiped away her tears and thought about how to tell her parents about the Fan family that night.

Dinner was relatively easy to prepare; Mu Yi'an made stir-fried liver tips and pork heart. Since the soup from lunch was all gone, Mu Yi'an made a pot of egg and persimmon soup and steamed a pot of rice.

Perhaps Jiang's mother had told Jiang's father in advance that Jiang Qi wanted to talk to them about something that evening, so during dinner, Jiang's father looked somber, and the others kept quiet, not daring to say anything useless.

After dinner, Mu Yi'an cleaned up the kitchen, while Jiang Shuyun, with the children, and Jiang Qi followed their parents back to the main house. Jiang Lan and her sister-in-law were also curious, but they didn't dare to follow, as Jiang's father's expression wasn't good.

"Father, Mother, I have some things I need to discuss with you."

Jiang's father looked at his daughter. She had been very sensible since she was little, helping her mother with housework and mending clothes. Although life wasn't as comfortable as it is now, the child was vibrant and always smiling. Now, she was like a withered blade of grass, lifeless.

"Go ahead and speak, your parents are here."

Jiang Qi took a deep breath and told Fan's mother-in-law about her plans.

"Taking a concubine?"

Jiang's mother exclaimed in surprise, her tone filled with disbelief.

She had always lived in the countryside, not far from the town, but she rarely went there. Although she knew about concubines from plays, those were just plays, too far removed from her life.

"Is this your mother-in-law's idea, or did your parents-in-law both decide this way?"

Jiang's father was relatively calm. Some of his classmates had concubines at home, but not many.

“My mother-in-law talked to me, and that was the gist of her words. My husband’s distant cousin has already moved into our house, and I felt bad about it, so I came back.”

Jiang Qi's father-in-law hadn't told her, but these matters were usually handled by her mother-in-law, so she didn't see her father-in-law very often.

The Fan family doesn't usually eat together. The mother-in-law leads the meals, while the father-in-law, husband, and eldest brother-in-law eat together. The Fan family has very strict rules, unlike their own family.

What are your plans?

Jiang's father wanted to know what his eldest daughter was thinking so that he could make a decision for her.

"Father, I'd like to ask my husband to see a doctor and confirm who is the one who is sick."

"What's wrong? Is your son-in-law not feeling well?"

Jiang's mother was even more surprised; she had never heard her daughter say such a thing before!

"No, it's just that I've been taking medicine for so many years, and the doctors all say I'm fine. I just want to know if my husband has some kind of problem. If it's not serious, and he gets better, then our problems will be solved."

“What you said makes sense; I hadn’t thought of that before. However, this matter won’t be easy; the Fan family might not agree.”

Jiang's father knew that it was unlikely he would get the Fan family to agree to let his son-in-law see a doctor. It was a matter of a man's face and the family's reputation.

“If, if they disagree and insist on allowing my husband to take a concubine, I, I want a divorce.”

Jiang Qi mustered her courage and voiced her thoughts.

"Divorce?"

Jiang's mother was frightened several times that night.

"Have you thought it through? If the Fan family doesn't agree to you seeing a doctor and insists on taking a concubine, will you agree to a divorce?"

"Father, I've made up my mind. I really can't stand my husband taking a concubine. This kind of life is not what I want. If that happens, I won't be able to stand it. I'm afraid I'll go crazy."

As Jiang Qi spoke, her eyes reddened. She might not understand what love is, but in the environment she grew up in, every family consisted of just the husband and wife; no one had multiple family members living together.

"Jiang Qi, if we get a divorce, can you bear the gossip and rumors? What about the future? Do you want to find another family or live alone like this? Your parents will die one day. Do you want to live with your brother and sister-in-law?"

Jiang's mother's heart was bleeding. How could her perfectly healthy daughter have encountered such a thing? No matter which choice she made, she wouldn't be happy.

“Mother, I have never thought about remarrying. What if it really is my problem that I can’t have children? Will I still be disliked? If you allow me to come home, I will stay at home. If in the future, in the future, if it really doesn’t work out, I will go to a nunnery to live out my days.”
