They were going to have dumplings for dinner. After cleaning up the dishes, Mu Yi'an and the others rested for a while and coaxed the children to sleep so they wouldn't be tired in the evening.
Before eating dumplings, people also worship their ancestors to welcome them home for the New Year.
Jiang's father, accompanied by his three sons and carrying paper money for burning, led the way from outside the door all the way to the entrance of the living room. The burning paper money warmed their hands.
After eating dumplings, that's basically it for today; there's nothing else to do.
Jiang Shuyun and the others decided to go home to stay that night, as there was no room here. The east wing where they had stayed before was without bedding. Moreover, it was their first year living separately, and the house couldn't be left empty.
Three children, one for each person to hold, just right.
Jiang Shuyun carried Shao Ming in her arms and held a lantern in her hand. Mu Yi'an carried Shao Yun, and Jiang Qi carried Chu Yue. The three of them slowly walked home.
After putting Shao Ming and Shao Yun on their beds and covering them with blankets, Mu Yi'an and Jiang Shuyun returned to their own room. Mu Yi'an wasn't worried about Chu Yue and Jiang Qi being together.
After a quick wash, the two lay in bed, their hearts filled with mixed emotions.
"Yi'an, this is the first New Year we've spent here since we arrived. How are you feeling? Are you feeling sad?"
"It's painful. I miss my parents and my brother. I used to not want to go home, and I didn't want to listen to my mom nagging me to get married. I even went two or three years without going home for the New Year. It was so peaceful outside. But now I can't go back even if I want to. It's a bitter feeling."
"Yes, before, we could go back but didn't want to. Now we want to go back but can't. We hope our parents are doing well over there. We hope they forget about us and live their own lives well."
"Let's hope so!"
The two, feeling down, hugged each other, hoping to draw some energy from one another, and wishing that the hug could give each other some strength.
