Chapter 91 Mu Yi'an Goes to the County Town

When Mu Yi'an received the news, she was very happy. After all, in ancient times with poor medical conditions, it was a very lucky thing for twins to be born smoothly.

"Shuyun, my second sister-in-law gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, and both mother and children are safe and sound."

"Really? That's great! Shouldn't we go back and take a look?"

"Of course I have to go back. I need to go back to deliver a gift. You can go during the full moon celebration."

Mu Yi'an thought for a moment. Now that her second sister-in-law had just given birth, it would be inconvenient for Jiang Shuyun to go over.

"Okay, I'll go to the full moon celebration."

Mu Yi'an started rummaging through drawers and cabinets, trying to figure out what gift to give. She had no idea. In her previous life, baby stores had all sorts of gift boxes.

She found two soft pieces of fabric, one blue and one pink. But fabric alone wasn't enough; her second sister-in-law had been very good to her. Even in the six months since she arrived, her sister-in-law had taken excellent care of her.

"Shuyun, come with me to the county town tomorrow. I want to go to the jewelry store and buy two longevity locks for the two children."

“Okay, I’ll go with you tomorrow. I also need to go to the bookstore to deliver the books I copied earlier. I’ll also pick up some more books; this time I’ll start copying the law.”

Jiang Shuyun had thought it through. The book copying couldn't stop. She could spend an hour copying books every day, which would not only earn her some money but also help her remember the material.

"Won't copying books interfere with your studies?"

"No, I also need to understand the law. Copying books can help me practice my handwriting and improve my memory; a bad pen is worse than a good memory."

"Okay, you can make your own plan. As for the exam, no one can help you. You need to work hard on it yourself."

Mu Yi'an felt a little excited about going to the county town. She had been here for over half a year, and the furthest she had ever gone was to her parents' home.

The next day, Mu Yi'an settled things at home, changed into a ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress), styled her hair into a more elaborate updo, and wore a silver hairpin.

"Jiang Qi, we're leaving the family in your care. We'll be back as soon as possible."

"Second sister-in-law, don't worry, I'll take good care of the house."

Jiang Qi held Chu Yue in her arms, and the aunt and niece waved goodbye to Mu Yi'an and the others as they left.

Jiang Shuhe drove the cart, so he didn't have to get up early to catch Uncle Jiang's mule cart and wouldn't be back until evening.

Although the oxcart wasn't going fast, the distance wasn't too far, so there was no need to rush.

They arrived in the county town without incident. Looking at the majestic city gate, Mu Yi'an was still a little dazed, wondering if this was real or some filming location.

Jiang Shuhe found a place to park the oxcart, and he stayed to watch over it. Mu Yi'an followed Jiang Shuyun toward the silver shop.

The county town is bustling with people, probably because of the docks. There are also many people coming and going to work, and the street vendors and peddlers are constantly coming and going.

The shops on both sides of the street were bustling with people, and business seemed to be good.

"Shuyun, it seems that the county town has a strong economy. The flow of people and customers looks very prosperous."

"Yes, there are even more people in the prefectural city. We are now in a prosperous era, with peace and prosperity throughout the land. Those in power are working hard to govern, and the people are living in peace and contentment."

Jiang Shuyun believes that no matter what dynasty or era it is, as long as there is no war and the rulers are not incompetent, the people will have a good life.

The couple walked and looked around, especially Mu Yi'an, who found it amazing that she was actually strolling through the streets of ancient times thousands of years ago. It was incredible.

"Yi'an, we've arrived. This is Yongxin Silver Shop, a well-known silver shop in the county."

"It's quite impressive, unlike the Liuguifu brand we have back home. The appearance is completely different."

Mu Yi'an followed Jiang Shuyun into the jewelry store, where a shop assistant came to greet them.

"Please come in, sir. What do you need? Our shop has everything from headpieces to earrings, from complicated to simple, with a complete range of styles to ensure your satisfaction."

The neatly dressed waiter introduced the items with a smile, his eyes gleaming with pride.

Mu Yi'an looked at the various kinds of jewelry displayed in the counter, some silver and some gold. Mu Yi'an didn't understand the craftsmanship, but she just thought they were very beautiful.

The first floor features relatively simple designs, along with some tableware, both simple and complex. Mu Yi'an didn't understand the craftsmanship behind these items.

"We'd like to see some longevity locks, something simple, not too heavy, for a newborn baby."

Mu Yi'an looked around. She didn't have the spare money to buy these pieces of jewelry right now, so she decided to look at longevity locks first. It would be too cruel to look at them but not have the money to buy them.

"Okay, I'll get it for you right away."

The young shop assistant went to get the item, and Mu Yi'an looked at the counter, seeing the glass of this era. Unlike the transparent and smooth glass of her previous life, it was more like frosted glass used for decoration, with some uneven textures and poor visibility.

"Master, Madam, please take a look. These are all longevity locks suitable for newborn babies. The designs are simple, but the meanings are auspicious."

Mu Yi'an looked at the several longevity locks on the tray. They were exquisitely crafted, some shaped like ruyi (a type of scepter), others like fish, and still others like lotus. The front was engraved with words such as "May you live a long and healthy life," "May you have a long and prosperous life," and "May you have peace and safety every year." The back had patterns such as a qilin (a mythical creature) delivering a child.

Mu Yi'an looked at them one by one and chose two ruyi-shaped ones, one with "Longevity" written on it and the other with "Long Life and Wealth." These two designs were relatively simple and lightweight, so they wouldn't choke a child when worn.

After making their selections, the shopkeeper took two wooden boxes and placed the two longevity locks inside. Mu Yi'an paid the money, took the items, and left.

"Alas, decades of hard work and struggle, all gone in one fell swoop!"

Why are you so sentimental?

"I suddenly remembered when I was in college, my roommate and I went shopping at Liuguifu. Looking at the dazzling array of goods, I only bought a pair of golden lilac earrings. I was really broke back then."
