Chapter 249 On Child Rearing

With the sound of the baby crying, the Zhou family welcomed a new member.

Jiang's mother stayed by Jiang Lan's side the whole time. Zhou's mother sent someone to call Zhou Zilin back. When he arrived home, the child was crying.

"Mother, Lanlan has given birth! She has given birth!"

Why are you only getting back now?

“We went to the countryside today. The teacher organized us to experience the mood of writing poetry. As soon as I got back to the school, I saw the servants at home saying that Lanlan was about to give birth, so I rushed back.”

Zhou Zilin also felt that things were too coincidental; how could it happen today?

"Madam, the young mistress has given birth to a daughter, and she is so tired that she has fallen asleep."

The old woman from the Zhou family came out carrying the swaddled baby to tell her mistress the good news.

"Good, good, everyone will be rewarded. How is the Second Young Mistress's health?"

"The midwife said everything went smoothly. After we've cleaned up, the doctor will take the pulse of the second young mistress and the baby."

"Okay, you can go in now. The child is small, don't let him get too much attention."

Zhou's mother didn't think much of it; she figured the flower would bloom first and bear fruit later, and she could have a son then.

"Mom, the baby is so small, all red, and a little ugly?"

Zhou Zilin glanced at his daughter just now and felt that she didn't look like him and Lanlan at all; she was too ugly.

"What nonsense are you talking about? All newborns are like this, they'll be fine in a few days."

"Lanlan, you're almost done getting ready. Hurry in and check on your mother-in-law; she's inside. Okay, I'm going to tell everyone the good news."

Zhou's mother left, and Zhou Zilin waited outside.

Jiang Lan woke up at night.

"Mother, mother..."

"You're awake. How are you feeling?"

"Thirsty, and weak."

Jiang Lan felt completely weak, as if her body had been rearranged.

"It's nothing serious. The doctor has examined you; you're just exhausted. Drink some water, eat something later, and your strength will gradually return."

Jiang's mother brought out a cushion for Jiang Lan to lean on for a while.

"Mother, where are the children? Where is Zilin?"

"The child is being looked after by a wet nurse, and Zilin is in the study."

"Mother, I gave birth to a daughter. Are Mother-in-law and Zilin unhappy about it?"

Jiang Lan had always hoped to give birth to a son, but unfortunately, things didn't go as planned.

"No, your mother-in-law and Zilin are both very happy. Giving birth safely is more important than anything else. You are still young, you can have another child in a few years."

"Lanlan, don't think about anything during your postpartum period. Just focus on recovering. Being healthy is more important than anything else."

Jiang's mother was afraid that her child would get stuck on something and ruin a good thing.

"Mother, I know. Although I'm a little disappointed that it's not a son, I will take good care of the child. He's the one I gave birth to, and it hurt so much."

"That's the right way to think. Your son and daughter are both your children. Raise them equally and fulfill your responsibilities as parents."

When the servants brought the food, Jiang's mother didn't say anything more.

The next day, Jiang's father and Jiang Shuwen came over.

Zhou Zilin entertained his father-in-law and brother-in-law, while Li Qiuniang went inside to see Jiang Lan.

"Mother, how is my sister-in-law? Is she producing enough breast milk?"

"They hired wet nurses, so they didn't have to feed the children themselves."

Although Jiang's mother did not understand, she respected the Zhou family's decision.

Li Qiuniang opened her mouth, but said nothing.

I presented the gifts I had brought, glanced at the child and Jiang Lan, and they both seemed fine.

While the Zhou family was busy with the baby's third-day celebration and full-month celebration, Mu Yi'an and Jiang Qi in Fucheng also received the news that Jiang Lan had safely given birth to a daughter.

Jiang Qi made a special trip to her second brother's house to discuss the gift-giving with her second sister-in-law.

"Second sister-in-law, my younger sister has given birth. How should we send the gifts?"

"Send someone to deliver it, and bring the message over."

Mu Yi'an has prepared everything, nothing too heavy or light, and will send someone to deliver it later.

“Then I’ll send someone to deliver it too. Let’s go together, so we can look out for each other.”

"Okay, let's go tomorrow. I've prepared everything. What about you?"

“I’m all ready. I’ll have Sister Lin make the trip.”

Mu Yi'an was planning to send Sister Fang over, not only to deliver a gift to Jiang Lan, but also to run errands at the estate.

"Second sister-in-law, do you think we should hire a governess for Anran and Chuyue?"

"Government nanny?"

“Yes, I see that my senior brother’s daughter has a wet nurse and a governess.”

Mu Yi'an recalled the palace dramas she had watched in her previous life, where daughters of wealthy families were always accompanied by governesses. Especially those high-ranking families would go to great lengths to invite retired palace maids or female officials to their homes so that their daughters could learn manners.

"Chuyue is only four years old, there's no rush. The most carefree days for a girl are the time she spends at her parents' home."

Our children will marry into families of equal social standing; we won't try to marry into wealthy or powerful families. We'll teach them to be sensible, calm in the face of adversity, brave, and strong.

If you really want to teach him some manners, wait until he's ten.

Mu Yi'an had no intention of abandoning ancient customs, nor would she instill any outdated ideas in her children.

They were born into this environment, so they have to adapt to it.

"Second sister-in-law, I feel much more relieved after hearing what you said. I really had some trouble adjusting since I came here."

My husband's family lives a different way than ours, which makes me feel a little out of place. Sometimes I wonder if they think I'm divorced and that it affects the children.

Jiang Qi was genuinely anxious. The sudden change of environment and the different people she was meeting made her lose confidence.

"You're overthinking it. Doctor Chu should have thought this through before deciding to marry you. Your worries are unnecessary."

Jiang Qi, do you still read medical books and research medicinal cuisine?
