Chapter 13
Luo Sanrong arrived outside the Imperial Study and respectfully explained his purpose: "I am a eunuch in Jingren Palace. This is a letter from Consort Shu to Your Majesty. Please pass it on."
"Give me the letter!" said the eunuch without even raising his head.
Luo Sanrong thought this was a good idea, so he handed the letter in his arms to the eunuch, wanting to ask him to personally deliver it to His Majesty. Before he could say anything, the eunuch took out another letter from his arms and handed it to Luo Sanrong. Luo Sanrong asked in confusion, "What is this?"
The eunuch said casually, "Reply."
"How can this be? How can there be a reply before the letter reaches His Majesty?" Luo Sanrong stepped forward to argue with the eunuch.
The eunuch glanced at Luo Sanrong and asked, "Are you a new eunuch? Didn't anyone tell you anything when you came?"
"What?" Luo Sanrong was confused and remembered the "warning" that Nanny Sun gave her when she first came to deliver the letter.
Seeing that Luo Sanrong really didn't understand, he said to her impatiently: "Just take this letter back, the reply is blank anyway..."
"How can this be? The Concubine Shu asked me to hand over the letter to His Majesty. This is simply a deception." Luo Sanrong tried hard to fight for it.
The eunuch was about to explain again, but when he saw the Queen behind Luo Sanrong, he knelt down neatly: "Greetings to the Queen——"
The Queen ignored him and just looked at Luo Sanrong who lowered her head, and signaled the guards behind her to take Luo Sanrong to a corner.
The Queen looked at the letter in Luo Sanrong's arms, then looked back at Luo Sanrong, her tone gentle yet with a hint of concern: "How is Concubine Shu's illness?"
Luo Sanrong answered truthfully: "I don't know for sure, but Concubine Shu often coughs..."
Before Luo Sanrong could finish her words, the Queen slapped her in the face and casually shook her hand. Luo Sanrong looked at her in disbelief.
"But I think she still has the energy to write a letter!" There was still a hint of smile in the queen's eyes, and it didn't look like she had just slapped someone.
"I'm warning you, you must return the letter the eunuch gave you in the same way, otherwise..." The queen pointed at Luo Sanyan with her armored hand and warned.
Luo Sanrong had tears in her eyes and didn't say anything.
The queen saw that Luo Sanyan was a new eunuch in Shufei's palace. Considering the child in her belly and her father's words to her to keep a low profile recently, she had to let her go for the time being and left.
Luo Sanrong could still hear the queen's faint complaints: "It's because of my pregnancy lately. I feel like my strength to hit people has decreased!"
Luo Sanrong tried hard to hold back her tears and walked aimlessly holding the letter from Concubine Shu.
As he was walking, he bumped into a wall of flesh. Luo Sanrong put his hand on his forehead and made an "ouch" sound. When he realized that he had bumped into someone, he quickly apologized, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, little man..."
"Eunuch Luo, why are you here?" A surprised voice came from above his head.
Luo Sanrong took a look and found that it was Ji Zeming, an acquaintance. Luo Sanrong had already been feeling aggrieved, and now that she met an acquaintance, she could no longer hold back. "You...why are you here?" Luo Sanrong said with sobs.
Ji Zeming didn't understand why, but he was most afraid of women crying, so he hurriedly comforted her: "What's wrong with you?" Luo Sanrong was crying so hard that she couldn't speak, but when Ji Zeming saw the slap marks on Luo Sanrong's face, he suddenly understood everything. Ji Zeming was considerate and didn't ask any more questions.
He took Luo Sanrong's hand and said to her patiently, "Come on, I'll take you somewhere."
"Where?" Luo Sanrong's sobbing gradually subsided.
"Come with me." Ji Zeming did not give a direct answer, but just pulled Luo Sanrong and jogged in the palace corridor.
"Is this the place you brought me to?" Luo Sanying looked around and asked curiously.
This is a small pavilion, located at the junction of the royal palace and the people. It is surrounded by lush trees, which completely block the view. Perhaps because of this, few people come here. At this time, the breeze comes out, and the leaves rustle, giving people a sense of tranquility.
"Yes, staying in the palace means you will suffer grievances, and there may be even greater grievances in the future." Ji Zeming held Luo Sanrong's shoulders and pressed her on the stool.
"So you need a place like this, where you can stay quietly and calm your mood." Ji Zeming looked directly into Luo Sanrong's eyes and spoke in a calm voice.
"So, you mean for me to find a place to slack off?" Luo Sanying said jokingly.
Ji Zeming chuckled, "Of course, you can say that."
There was something in his eyes that Luo Sanrong couldn't see clearly, which made Luo Sanrong avoid it reflexively.
Luo Sanzhen watched the bird land on the railing, then startled it again with a noise. She slowly said, "Do you know what I'm most grateful to you for?"
"I know." Ji Zeming did not sit on the stool, but leaned against the pillar.
"Do you know?" Luo Sanrong felt a little surprised and asked again.
"Just pretend you don't know anything, right?"
"Yes!" Luo Sanrong didn't expect that he could guess it.
"A woman should pretend not to know something she doesn't want others to know. This is the manners of a man." Ji Zeming sat on the railing under the pavilion, rested his arms on his bent knees, and spoke in a casual voice.
"What woman are you talking about?" Luo Sanrong felt a little guilty, and her eyes unconsciously looked at her chest.
"Keeping a secret for a man is also a man's demeanor." Ji Zeming then said, and Luo Sanrong realized that he was overthinking it.
Ji Zeming picked out a leaf that he liked from the branches that extended under the pavilion, put the leaf to his lips, and blew a melodious tune.
Luo Sanrong closed his eyes and listened. When the song ended, he asked with interest, "Where is this little tune from? It's really beautiful."
Ji Zeming looked into her eyes and said, "This is a little tune I learned from Qi Pingguo. It's to praise the friendship between brothers."
In fact, it was not. The person who taught him the tune said that it was a tune used to express feelings. Thinking of this, Ji Zeming unconsciously looked at Luo Sanrong's face. She was still immersed in the lingering sound of the tune, so he changed the subject and said it was a song of brotherhood.
"Anyway, no matter what, I still want to thank you for not asking me."
"Let's take a break before we go. We need to take a break from our busy schedule. That's the ultimate enjoyment." Ji Zeming tilted his head back, completely relaxed, leaned against the pillar, closed his eyes and said.
The sun moved from east to west, and in the blink of an eye it was already late at night. Luo Sanrong's letter still hadn't been successfully delivered to His Majesty, which made Luo Sanrong feel very disappointed. Luo Sanrong wanted to give up, thinking: "I should just do as the eunuch said yesterday and hand it directly to the Concubine Shu."
She wanted to turn around and leave, but at this moment, Luo Sanrong saw that there was a passage for eunuchs at the remote corner door of the imperial study, which was used to deliver memorials from His Majesty. A eunuch was about to send the memorial back, so Luo Sanrong thought of a way. She deliberately bumped into the eunuch who was delivering the memorial, and the memorials were scattered all over the floor.
Luo Sanying quickly apologized and knelt down to pick up all the memorials. While the eunuch was not paying attention, he mixed the letter from Concubine Shu among the memorials. When he saw that the eunuch did not notice and brought the memorials with the letter into the imperial study, Luo Sanying breathed a sigh of relief.
Three days later, Luo Sanrong finally received the letter that His Majesty had ordered the eunuchs to deliver. Luo Sanrong excitedly handed the letter to Consort Shu and said happily, "Your Majesty, the eunuch who delivered the letter said that His Majesty took a long time to write you a reply."
Concubine Shu saw the reply on the desk and asked again and again: "Did Your Majesty see the letter I sent?"
"Yes." Luo Sanrong answered affirmatively and told Concubine Shu the whole story of delivering the letter.
Concubine Shu's fingers trembled as she picked up the letter on the table. She tried to open it several times but failed. Luo Sanrong saw Concubine Shu's nervousness and comforted her by saying, "When I took the letter back, I found that the paper was stained with a pleasant fragrance..."
As Concubine Shu opened the letter, she replied, "It's the scent of hibiscus. His Majesty knows that I love hibiscus the most. In the past, he planted hibiscus all over Jingren Palace..."
Luo Sanrong's words eased Concubine Shu's nervousness. She finally opened the reply letter. Concubine Shu's smile changed from expectation to disappointment. Luo Sanrong still didn't understand why, so she approached Concubine Shu and took a look at the letter. It was still a blank piece of paper.
