Chapter Seventy-One: Where Did the Girlfriend Come From?
Chen Guang calmly put down the paper cup and suddenly suggested, "Let's go ride snowmobiles."
"Now?" Lin Yu turned his head in surprise, a little bit of cream foam still clinging to the tip of his nose.
"Okay, now." Chen Guang had already stood up, his warm hand naturally grasping her wrist, a smile playing on his lips as he looked down at her. "Let me show you real speed."
Chen Guang pulled Lin Yu toward the snowmobile rental shop. She followed behind him, glancing back at the ski slopes. She saw Yao Fangfang in the distance, leaning on her ski poles, looking at them meaningfully.
After completing the formalities, the staff pushed the motorcycle onto the road, briefly explained the operating procedures to them, and then stepped aside.
Chen Guang climbed into the driver's seat and gestured for Lin Yu to sit behind him. As soon as they were settled, the car suddenly started moving and sped off.
The sudden acceleration threw her backward, and before she could even utter a cry of surprise, she was violently thrown back by the inertia.
She hurriedly tightened her arms and instinctively hugged Chen Guang tightly, her cheek slamming heavily against his back.
"Too fast!" she exclaimed, pounding his shoulder amidst the howling wind, only to hear a hearty laugh coming from ahead.
The car slowed down slightly, but still maintained a thrilling speed, carrying them across the snow and taking them further and further away from the ski slopes.
As we passed through a grove of trees, sunlight filtered through the bare branches, casting dappled patterns of light like golden fish on the vast expanse of white snow.
"Are you happy now?" Chen Guang's voice came through the wind.
"Um!"
Lin Yu nodded, and the bitterness in his heart instantly vanished.
She remembered the day he went to the bar to help her out, and he drove her there just like that, her cheek pressed against his warm back, the wind whistling in her ears.
"Are you still envious of others?" he asked again, his voice carrying a hint of danger.
Lin Yu's heart tightened, but he didn't hold back, leaning close to Chen Guang's ear and asking in a sinister tone, "Still trying to chat up girls?"
The sound of the wind and the roar of the engine weakened the power of her voice, and Lin Yu was unsure whether Chen Guang had heard her.
But soon, the body pressed against his back felt the vibration of his chest, and then heard him burst into laughter: "So that's why you're angry?"
"When did I get angry?" Lin Yu hurriedly defended himself, but then realized that his words were untenable, so he tried to salvage the situation by saying, "You promised to teach me how to ski, but you still had the mind to guide others. That's called breaking your promise."
The excuse was so lame that even she found it somewhat laughable, but she didn't want to admit her feelings for Chen Guang right away.
Chen Guang seemed to see through Lin Yu's thoughts and said with a light laugh, "Alright! From now on, you, Lin Yu, will have the highest priority with me, okay?"
"Besides, strictly speaking, what I did wasn't exactly flirting."
He organized his thoughts and explained, "They immediately wanted my phone number. What could I do? I could only tell them I have a girlfriend and that they should give up on that idea!"
"You probably have no idea how many temptations I've resisted since I was a child, and you can't understand my struggles."
Chen Guang followed the lead Lin Yu gave him, and the more he talked, the more relaxed he felt. The frustration he felt from Zheng Qi's disruption suddenly became insignificant.
"Can't you keep your mouth shut?" Lin Yu muttered, but a sweet feeling welled up in his heart.
"What's wrong with me?" Chen Guangming asked knowingly, deliberately teasing her.
"Where did you get your girlfriend from?" Lin Yu pressed on relentlessly, as if determined to pry out some answer she expected from him.
Chen Guang simply smiled and turned to look behind him. "Whether I have it or not is up to you to decide."
Chen Guang's words were like a fishhook, baited specifically for Lin Yu, cast directly at her. It was as if if she were willing to take the bait, she could immediately witness his feelings.
Lin Yu's heart was gently lifted by Chen Guang's doting hints, and felt sore and numb from being squeezed in his hand.
She didn't know how to respond to this heavy ambiguity, so she buried her face deeper into his back, tightened her arms around Chen Guang's waist, and tried to hide the flutter in her heart.
Chen Guang sensed Lin Yu's movement, and a faint smile unconsciously appeared on his lips.
As evening approached, everyone took off their ski gear and gathered in the resort's restaurant. Zheng Qi ordered two cases of beer and a table of local farm-style dishes.
Zhang Yimeng raised his beer glass and clinked glasses with each of the boys in Chen Guang's dorm, excitedly sharing his skiing experiences from the day.
Qian Zan's parents called her, and she answered the phone, then got up and walked to the side.
This action reminded Lin Yu that she hadn't informed Lin Min of her itinerary today. She reached into her pocket but only touched the empty lining of her down jacket, which startled her so much that she stood up abruptly.
"What's wrong?" Chen Guang's chopsticks were suspended in mid-air, startled by Lin Yu's reaction.
"My phone..." Lin Yu frantically searched every pocket, finally looking at him with a look of utter despair. "My phone is lost."
"Don't worry, it probably fell off at the ski resort." Chen Guang put down his chopsticks, wiped his mouth, and grabbed his coat without another word. "I'll go with you to look for it!"
Qian Zan and Chen Guang's two roommates wanted to get up to help, but Yao Fangfang and Zhang Yimeng gave them a wink and stopped them.
Zheng Qi looked thoughtfully at the scene before him. It seemed he finally realized, belatedly, the reason for Chen Guang's excessive possessiveness and concern when he and Lin Yu were getting along too closely.
Halfway through the meal, Chen Guangxian accompanied Lin Yu to the operations center to register her information, and then the two of them followed the route they remembered to find their way there.
The ski resort was completely shrouded in night. Although the searchlights illuminated the snow brightly, visibility was still not as clear as during the day.
They searched for nearly an hour in the cold wind and finally found Lin Yu's phone in the snow next to the snowmobile riding area.
At this moment, it is pitifully half-buried in the snow, its screen shattered beyond recognition and no longer usable.
Lin Yu looked down at the shattered phone in his hand, let out a long sigh, and the good mood he had enjoyed all afternoon vanished as he thought about the pile of troubles that would follow.
Seeing Lin Yu's reaction, Chen Guang took the wreckage from her hand, removed her SIM card, inserted it into the spare SIM card slot of his own phone, and handed it back.
"Use mine first!"
"Then what are you going to do?" Lin Yu looked up at him, puzzled.
Chen Guang shrugged nonchalantly. "What important business could they possibly have with me!"
He shoved his phone into Lin Yu's hand and then took her wrist, leading her back. "Let's go back and eat first."
Lin Yu shoved his phone into his coat pocket. He pulled her closer and whispered reassuringly, "The photos, the chat history, I promise I won't lose a single one. Cheer up, okay?"
The two walked in silence to the restaurant entrance, whereupon Chen Guang released his grip on Lin Yu's wrist and turned to look at her.
"You go in and eat first, I want to go back and rest." Lin Yu gave him a perfunctory smile.
"I have something to do, so I won't go in with you. Please tell them." Chen Guang reached out and ruffled Lin Yu's hair, tightening the scarf around her neck. "If you're tired, get some rest. I'll come find you first thing tomorrow morning, okay?"
Where are you going so late?
"It's a secret." Chen Guang grinned at her, revealing a sharp canine tooth on one side, and pushed her into the house. He then turned and walked towards the parking lot alone.
The unexpected incident made Lin Yu eat his meal absentmindedly. The group decided to spend the night at the ski resort. Since it was still early, Zheng Qi booked a karaoke room to liven things up.
Lin Yu really couldn't muster any enthusiasm. After listening to them sing for a while, he said goodbye to Yao Fangfang and went back to the guesthouse at the ski resort to rest alone.
She had barely lain down when Chen Guang's phone suddenly vibrated in her palm.
The screen lit up with the word "Mom." Lin Yu's contact name for Lin Min included both her first and last name, so this was clearly not his mother.
She stared hesitantly at the constantly flashing caller ID, and the call automatically disconnected after a long wait. But less than two seconds later, it stubbornly lit up again.
Lin Yu clutched Chen Guang's phone, searching for him around the ski resort several times, but he didn't seem to have returned. He wasn't in the KTV room, and the guesthouse room was empty.
Everyone was surprised to see her appear alone, as they all assumed she had been with Chen Guang the whole time.
The phone in his hand vibrated for the fifth time, feeling like a hot charcoal. Lin Yu bit his lip and reluctantly pressed the answer button.
"Hello, Auntie, I'm Chen Guang's classmate!"
There was a noticeable pause on the other end of the phone, followed by a brief silence, and then a gentle inquiry: "Hello, could you please let Chen Guang take the call?"
"Auntie, it's a class get-together today," Lin Yu lied, his voice noticeably strained.
"He left his phone on his seat, and... he might have gone to the restroom." She felt a thin layer of sweat on her palms, and her knuckles unconsciously tightened. "When I see him, should I have him call you back?"
"Oh, I see!" The woman on the phone chuckled gracefully. "It's nothing important. Have fun, no need to call back."
After hanging up the phone, Lin Yu noticed several red marks on her palm from where the phone had been pressed against her skin. Staring at the gradually darkening screen, her thoughts were in turmoil as she tried to figure out how to get Chen Guang to handle the situation.
Answering the phone without permission was indeed inappropriate, but in that situation, there seemed to be no other choice. Chen Guang's mother sounded very understanding, completely different from the stern image he had described.
Perhaps things aren't as serious as they seem; it's just a phone call, and maybe the other party won't even care about this little incident.
Lin Yu and Yao Fangfang were assigned to the same room at the guesthouse. After taking a shower, she sat on the edge of the bed, slowly drying her wet hair with a towel.
A lot seemed to have happened that day. Lin Yu felt a bit confused and wanted to confide in her friend, but she didn't return until late at night.
The moonlight from outside the window shone on the empty bed. She held her phone, leaned against the headboard, and fell asleep without realizing it.
Half-asleep, she seemed to hear the faint sound of the doorknob turning and deliberately light footsteps. She tried to open her eyes, but sleepiness overwhelmed her like a tide, and her consciousness quickly sank back into darkness.
