Having not rested well for several days, I slept exceptionally soundly, from morning until eight o'clock in the evening.
Luo Shimiao yawned and opened the door, hearing voices in the living room. "Godmother's here?"
Her face lit up with joy, and she was about to speak when she heard her say...
"Shujun, you should have received the banquet invitation, right? Are you planning to cancel it again this year?" Xu Jia was furious when she thought of those rumors: "Over the years, those so-called high-society ladies have been spreading rumors that our Miaomiao has serious flaws."
"That's why you haven't dared to bring her to any banquets all these years, protecting her carefully for fear of being exposed and bringing shame to yourselves."
Ye Shujun's face turned cold: "Let them talk, it won't hurt me at all."
"Miao Miao has never liked attending those kinds of competitive and fake banquets."
"I won't make her do things she doesn't like, nor will I demand that she become an outstanding person. I just hope that she can be herself, live freely, and act according to her heart."
Luo Shimiao's eyes welled up with tears. Thinking of her past "sins," she felt a pang of guilt. Perhaps it was still not too late to make amends?
Gu Nian happened to hear the second half of it, and hugged her from behind, whispering, "My future mother-in-law is such a nice person."
The conversation continued...
Xu Jia nodded in agreement: "By the way, Wang Jiao's daughter has returned to China. A couple of days ago, I was having afternoon tea with some friends, and coincidentally, she was sitting at the next table. What bad luck!"
“She kept praising her daughter in different ways, which was fine, but when her best friend saw me there, she brought up some untrue rumors about Miaomiao and compared Wang Jiao’s daughter to Miaomiao. It was disgusting to me to death to praise one and put the other down.”
"If my friend hadn't stopped me, I would have poured a pot of tea on her."
Ye Shujun patted her best friend on the back to comfort her: "They know we're close, they're just trying to annoy you, they want to see you get angry and go crazy."
"Next time you encounter a situation like this, send me a message and I'll go over and give them a piece of my mind."
"Fine, if you're not going, I won't go to the banquet this year either."
“Go, why not go?” Luo Shimiao ran out and sat down next to her mother, hugging her arm. “Mom, take me to eat some melon. If I remember correctly, Wang Jiao’s husband was the one who spent a lot of money to commission a painting back then, and he couldn’t eat or sleep because of you.”
"I'm very curious about what my dad's defeated opponents look like."
Ye Shujun looked down at her, a smile appearing between her brows: "You really want to go?"
"real."
"Okay, I'll take you there."
"Yay!" She stood up when she saw Gu Nian walking slowly towards her and said, "This dignified, virtuous, and graceful Ms. Xu is my godmother."
"Godmother, this is my boyfriend, Gu Nian."
Gu Nian smiled slightly and looked at her, saying, "Hello, godmother."
Xu Jia paused for a second, then laughed: "Okay, okay, I met you once seven or eight years ago. You were attending a banquet with your parents. In the blink of an eye, you've grown up so much and become even more handsome. You and Miao Miao are a perfect match."
“A-Nian, you call me Aunt Ye, but you call her godmother,” Ye Shujun said, feigning anger. “I’m not happy.”
Gu Nian said without hesitation, "Mom, I was wrong."
"That's more like it."
Luo Shimiao: "By the way, Mom, when does the banquet you mentioned start?"
She picked up the invitation on the table, glanced at it, and said, "Tomorrow night at eight o'clock."
"OK, I'll trouble you to prepare the evening dress for me."
"Okay." Ye Shujun pinched her daughter's nose; the little rascal had grown up.
Gu Nian looked at the invitation thoughtfully.
"You guys chat, I'm going upstairs for a bit." Luo Shimiao stood up and quickly went upstairs. Logically speaking, Li Gou Dan'er should have gotten up by now.
I haven't seen her or Third Brother at this hour. Could it be that they were also getting a bath together? And then got so exhausted from the bath that they couldn't get up?
Upon entering the room, I saw a small hill on the bed. Moving my gaze upwards, a beautiful face with furrowed brows came into view.
She sat down on the edge of the bed and reached out to smooth her brow: "Did you have a nightmare?" The temperature under her fingers alarmed her, and she pressed her whole palm against it: "You have a fever."
Li Man opened her eyes and saw it was her: "I...want to drink some water."
"Okay, wait a moment." Luo Shimiao washed the cup clean, filled a glass with warm water, placed it on the table, and helped her sit up to feed her.
After she finished drinking, he picked her up and carried her to Luo Jianxing's room.
"Why did you go to his room? Shouldn't you have taken me to the hospital? I have a fever, not that I've been given an aphrodisiac."
Luo Shimiao kicked open Luo Jianxing's door and chuckled as he looked down, "Looks like you're not completely delirious yet."
Luo Jianxing was awakened by the loud noise. He sat up, pointed two fingers at the door, and said with half-closed eyes, "What kind of monster dares to trespass into my room?"
“Your sweetheart has a fever.” Luo Shimiao tucked his best friend into his bed: “You take care of him first, I’ll go call the doctor.”
His muddled mind cleared instantly. Touching his burning forehead, he got out of bed barefoot to find a fever-reducing patch.
Luo Shimiao, holding onto the railing, called out, "Mom, what's the phone number for a private doctor? Manman has a fever."
In the midst of their conversation, Ye Shujun immediately stood up: "Oh dear, this child was perfectly fine this morning. I'll go make a call right now."
"Master, you mustn't die! I can't bear to leave you." Little Green stood on the pillow, spread its wings, and hugged her head: "Do you want to make a will now? I'll remember it for you."
Li Man rolled her eyes: "Get lost!"
Luo Shimiao heard the wailing and crying from outside the door. He quickly went in, grabbed the dog by the scruff of its neck, and threw it towards the door.
The small figure tumbled several times in the air before disappearing from sight.
Luo Jianxing found the fever-reducing patch in his older brother's room, sat down on the bed, brushed aside the stray hairs on her forehead, and applied the patch.
Looking at her weak best friend, Luo Shimiao said, "Close your eyes and sleep for a while, the doctor will be here soon."
"Uh-huh."
Luo Shimiao went downstairs but didn't see her godmother. Just then, she saw Gu Nian returning from outside: "Did godmother go back?"
"Yes, I just saw her off to her car."
"Let's go to the kitchen and cook some porridge for Li Gou Dan'er."
"good."
......
Li Man felt a chill run through her body and pulled the blanket tighter around her.
Her movements caught Luo Jianxing's eye. He lifted his feet onto the bed, pulled back the covers, and lay down, embracing her with his arms to warm her with his body.
She buried herself in his arms, trembling, and said, "This isn't enough to keep warm. It'll be warmer if you take everything off."
Luo Jianxing kissed her forehead, his eyes filled with pity: "Even in this state, you still have the mind to joke around."
"This is not a joke, it's my true feeling: I'm trying to get some benefits while treating a minor ailment."
"Sigh." Li Man sighed heavily.
He stroked his fair cheek with his fingers: "I rarely see you sigh, what's wrong?"
Li Man looked up at those worried eyes and said softly, "I hope that what's suffocating me isn't life, but you."
Luo Jianxing shook his head and chuckled, tightening his grip on her arm a little: "I'll massage it for you when you're better."
