Chapter 7: Is Master Shaofu married?

Chapter 7: Is Master Shaofu married?

The candle in the study flickered unexpectedly.

Rong Jianxue raised her eyes slightly, her dark pupils reflecting the warm firelight, and the jade mountain was covered with snow.

Across the door, Rong Jianxue's voice was pleasant: "Not yet, is there anything urgent?"

Outside the door, Pei Jingxu looked at the light in the study and said timidly, "Yes... there are some things I want to discuss with you, sir."

Rong Jianxue and Jiang Hui looked at each other.

Jiang Hui understood and nodded slightly. He walked to the door and opened both doors.

In an instant, the scent of agarwood in the study passed over Pei Jingxu's nose. She stood in the night and could see the man behind the desk when she raised her eyes.

The two people are one bright and one dark, and the light and shadow are mixed.

After opening the door, Jiang Hui bowed slightly towards Pei Jingxu and said, "Madam, if you have anything to say, please speak outside. My son may have caught a cold from the rain today, so I'm afraid I'll pass it on to you."

Just a few words won’t build a dangerous wall.

Pei Jingxu nodded, took a few steps forward, and stood outside the door. He said in a clear and gentle voice, "Please don't mention today's assassination to my mother-in-law tomorrow."

She lowered her head with a guilty conscience and said softly, "If my mother-in-law knew that I was assassinated when I returned home with you, she would never allow me to go up the mountain to pray for my husband..."

Jiang Hui, who was standing by, heard this and said unhappily, "Second Madam, my young master almost got injured trying to save you. It's fine that you didn't even say a word of concern, but now you're still only thinking about the second young master?"

"Jiang Hui." Rong Jianxue said in a deep voice.

Jiang Hui frowned, turned around and said nothing more.

Pei Jingxu lowered her head even lower, her voice trembling slightly, "My lord, you caught a cold while saving me. If you don't mind, I'll have someone make some ginger soup and bring it to you."

Across the hallway, Rong Jianxue sat at the desk. "The assassin's target was me. You suffered an unprovoked disaster, so there's no need to feel guilty."

"Besides, I didn't want to tell my mother about the assassin and cause her unnecessary worry. You can rest assured."

Upon hearing this, the woman finally raised her eyes, her eyes flickering in the candlelight, like a pool of spring water.

"Thank you, sir."

"Anything else?"

Pei Jingxu nodded and said, "I only discovered after returning home today that the bracelet my husband gave me before he left is missing."

Rong Jianxue moved her eyes and said, "He must have fallen into the grass after jumping off the carriage."

Pei Jingxu whispered, "Sir... could you send someone to look for it for me? I don't dare to..."

Jiang Hui listened from the side, sneered, held the sword in his hands, and said nothing.

Rong Jianxue nodded and said, "I'll ask Jiang Hui to look for it tomorrow. There are few people walking on the mountainside, so we should be able to find it."

Pei Jingxu then smiled and bowed: "Thank you, sir."

"Is the wound on your back feeling better?"

"The doctor has checked it out, and it's getting much better now."

Rong Jianxue nodded, and the problem was solved.

Pei Jingxu didn't linger any longer: "Then I will withdraw first. My lord, please be busy."

After saying that, she smiled at Rong Jianxue and turned to leave.

Watching Pei Jingxu walk away, Jiang Hui closed the door again, saying indignantly, "This Second Lady is indeed just as the rumors say. She only thinks about her husband all day long. Today, the young master saved her life, but she didn't even say a word of comfort."

Rong Jianxue frowned slightly, "Most women these days stay in their boudoirs, their husbands being their world. It's not wrong for Pei to be thinking about Xuanzhou all the time."

Jiang Hui: "But——"

"The Pei family has suffered a disaster. Pei Shi has lost her biological parents. If our Rong family continues to criticize her, we will be no different from beasts."

Jiang Hui lowered his head when he heard this: "It's my fault for talking too much..."

Rong Jianxue didn't want to discuss this with him any further, so she waved her hand and said, "Go look for her bracelet in the mountains tomorrow."

"yes."

--

When Pei Jingxu walked out of the East Courtyard, a smile appeared on the corner of his mouth.

Rong Xuanzhou's excuse was really useful. Regardless of whether Rong Jianxue could find the bracelet, she could go to the East Courtyard to ask him later.

She did not think there was anything wrong with revealing her "burning love" for Rong Xuanzhou to Rong Jianxue. On the contrary, compared to a woman who was completely devoted to him, a "widow" who clearly had someone in her heart would make him let down his guard more.

If she had really made it clear from the beginning that she had no interest in Rong Xuanzhou, Rong Jianxue would never have let her enter the gate of the East Courtyard.

Rong Jianxue is an upright person with a gentlemanly demeanor. There is no benefit in pestering or pursuing him. The only way is to pull the kite string little by little like flying a kite.

After making his presence felt with Rong Jianxue, Pei Jingxu had to find a way to get back her dowry.

--

Sure enough, the next morning, Pei Jingxu had his door knocked by the old lady's maid.

"Second Madam, the old lady is waiting for you in the main hall."

Pei Jingxu dressed neatly and came to the main hall, where he saw a woman in luxurious clothes sitting on the main seat with an uneasy look on her face.

"Greetings to my mother-in-law." Pei Jingxu was very polite and bowed respectfully.

She didn't call herself "daughter-in-law" in front of her, for fear of displeasing the person in charge.

"Ms. Pei, kneel down!" Old Madam Rong said in a cold voice from the main seat.

Pei Jingxu's eyes were filled with confusion: "Mother-in-law...what happened?"

"How dare you ask! You did something wrong yourself, yet you forced Nanny Wang to leave? What are your intentions?!"

Pei Jingxu hurriedly explained, "Mother-in-law, I didn't drive Nanny Wang away!"

"You still dare to quibble!"

Old Madam Rong winked at the two maids beside her, and they stepped forward, forced Pei Jingxu to kneel in front of her!

"Pei! You've been restless all day and even drove my maid away. Is it your turn to be the head of the Rong family?"

Pei Jingxu's eyes were red and tears welled up in her eyes. "Mother-in-law, it was Nanny Wang who bumped into him first, so Master Young Master kicked her out of the house!"

"Oh, when did you become so sharp-tongued that you actually pinned everything on my son!"

Madam Rong said sternly, "I'm telling you, even Nanny Wang, who Jianxue drove away, was instigated by you!"

As she spoke, Madam Rong tried to calm herself down: "Madame Wang has been with me for over forty years, devoted to me. I just gave you a few words of advice, and you actually drove her away! Pei, you're so arrogant!"

"Mother-in-law, it's obvious that you and I are one family..." Pei Jingxu's tears fell, and I felt pity for her.

"A family? Humph, those shops and dowries you sent were all managed by Nanny Wang. It was because of her that your shops and houses didn't go bankrupt and suffered losses. How dare you mention a family to me!?"

Finally, Pei Jingxu looked up at Madam Rong and said, "Madam Wang isn't the only one who can run a shop. I can learn too!"

--

Forbidden City, Imperial Road.

When Rong Jianxue returned home from court, the prime minister Shen Anshan, who was above everyone else, followed him.

"Master Master, please stay."

Rong Jianxue turned around, and after seeing who was coming, he held up his sceptre and bowed, "Greetings, Prime Minister."

Shen Anshan smiled and glanced over him, seeming very satisfied.

"I am a straightforward person, so I will get straight to the point. May I ask if Master Shaofu is married?"
