His eyes were bulging out of their sockets, a fruit knife was stuck in his carotid artery, and blood was gushing out, quickly forming a small dark red puddle beneath him.
Upon witnessing such a bloody scene, Gu Baiwei's legs went weak and she almost collapsed to the ground.
At that moment, she suddenly heard faint breathing sounds in the room, and her heart immediately jumped into her throat.
Sensing the approaching breathing, Gu Baiwei gritted her teeth, turned around abruptly, and rammed herself against the dark figure behind the door.
Caught off guard, the other person stumbled back a step. At the same time, she suddenly smelled a familiar scent on that person and immediately looked up in surprise.
The moment her gaze met those deep, dark eyes, Gu Baiwei's heart finally relaxed, only to rise again immediately.
If there's no one else here, then wasn't the doctor on the ground killed by Shen Yanqing?
If she witnesses the murder, will she also be silenced?
Gu Baiwei subconsciously took a step back, avoiding Shen Yanqing's outstretched hand, and felt a chill creep up from the soles of her feet.
“Mr. Chen… I didn’t see anything.”
She backed away while explaining, but then she saw Shen Yanqing's expression suddenly change. Before she could react, he reached out and pulled her into his arms: "Be careful."
A deep, magnetic voice rang in her ears, as pleasing to the ear as a cello, but Gu Baiwei felt a chill run down her spine. Oh no, he was about to make his move.
However, Shen Yanqing simply moved her away from her original position and then let her go.
Gu Baiwei then noticed that Shen Yanqing had a long, deep gash on his left arm, so deep that the bone was visible.
"He is not a doctor here."
Shen Yanqing suddenly spoke, walking over and squatting down next to the dead doctor. He reached in and pulled out a gun: "The real doctor was probably killed by him long ago."
Gu Baiwei suddenly remembered the bloodstains on the middle-aged man's leather shoes, and those expensive shoes.
An ordinary rural doctor might not be able to afford those shoes even with a year's salary.
Thinking of this, Gu Baiwei felt a chill run down her spine.
The man used an excuse to send her away, but it turned out he wanted to assassinate Shen Yanqing.
She opened her mouth to say something, but Shen Yanqing quickly covered her mouth.
Faint footsteps approached from afar.
Shen Yanqing's gaze fell on the half-open door, and he lowered his voice to say, "There are three people. We need to leave as soon as possible."
After saying that, he reached out and put his arm around Gu Baiwei's waist, picked her up in his arms, and whispered just as she was about to cry out, "Shh, hold on tight to me."
Gu Baiwei met his unusually serious gaze and instinctively hugged his neck tightly.
A slight smile appeared on Shen Yanqing's lips. He then picked up Gu Baiwei, stepped onto the windowsill, and jumped out of the second-floor window.
Gu Baiwei was somewhat afraid of heights and instinctively closed her eyes tightly.
When they opened their eyes again, the two had landed steadily.
Holy crap, this guy jumped from the second floor and was still holding her without getting hurt at all. No wonder he's the most powerful character in the book.
Meeting Gu Baiwei's shocked gaze, Shen Yanqing smiled faintly: "What? Now you realize you've fallen in love with me?"
As soon as she finished speaking, Gu Baiwei spotted a tall and strong man standing at the second-floor window.
The man had a long scar on his face that ran from the corner of his left eye to his right chin, making him look particularly ferocious.
Noticing them, the man's fierce gaze fell on Shen Yanqing. He narrowed one eye, raised the sniper rifle in his hand, and pointed the dark muzzle at Shen Yanqing's heart.
Gu Baiwei's heart skipped a beat in fright.
But Shen Yanqing turned around slowly and gave the man upstairs a provocative smile.
Holy crap, are they trying to kill them already?
Sure enough, the man on the second floor cursed and opened fire without hesitation.
Gu Baiwei was startled, but Shen Yanqing seemed to have expected it. He rolled on the spot with Gu Baiwei in his arms, dodging the shot.
Gunshots rang out close to them, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Gu Baiwei felt a wave of fear; that gun had almost pierced through both of them.
"Walk."
Shen Yanqing pulled her up from the ground and, using the surrounding trees as cover, led her all the way outside.
Gu Baiwei ran after them for a while, then suddenly stopped: "No, Yueyue and the others are still in the hospital, I can't leave."
“Their only target is me. If you go back now, you will only implicate them.”
Shen Yanqing's voice remained calm, and his words instantly calmed Gu Baiwei down.
Yes, everyone saw her run away with Shen Yanqing. Going back now will only implicate Yueyue and the others.
She bit her lower lip: "So what do we do now?"
Shen Yanqing glanced around to make sure no one was following before speaking: "My men will be here soon. Until then, let's find a place to hide."
Gu Baiwei tiptoed and looked around, noticing wisps of smoke rising in the distance. She quickly pointed it out to Shen Yanqing: "Mr. Shen, look, there's a village over there."
Shen Yanqing narrowed his long, narrow eyes: "Come on, stay close to me."
The two walked towards the village, one after the other.
As evening fell, smoke rose from the rooftops of many houses.
Two old men were squatting at the village entrance, smoking their pipes and chatting idly.
One of them was the first to spot Shen Yanqing and his companion, and tapped the old man next to him with his pipe, signaling him to look over.
The other old man, upon recognizing the newcomer, narrowed his cloudy eyes, a strange light flickering within them.
"Hello, do you have any accommodations around here?"
Gu Baiwei walked over and asked one of the old men.
The old man smiled at her and said, "Yes, there's a small inn at the east end of the village. Just keep walking in that direction and you'll see it."
His eyes seemed glued to Gu Baiwei, and that blatant gaze made her very uncomfortable.
Shen Yanqing, standing behind her, frowned and stepped forward to block Gu Baiwei's path: "Thank you."
After saying that, he reached out and took Gu Baiwei's hand in his palm, his eyes sweeping coldly over the old man who had been staring at Gu Baiwei, his gaze growing colder.
The old man suddenly met those cold eyes, his hand holding the pipe froze, and he immediately looked away guiltily.
Shen Yanqing raised an eyebrow, said nothing more, and led Gu Baiwei toward the east side of the village.
As she walked along, Gu Baiwei noticed that the village seemed a bit strange.
The village is mostly inhabited by men. When you occasionally encounter a woman, she looks timid and hesitant, as if she is afraid of people.
As we approached the east end of the village, a man was pointing at a woman and cursing loudly.
The woman was curled up on the ground, her long hair disheveled and almost covering most of her face, probably because it hadn't been cut in a long time.
"Damn it, you bitch! You can't even have a baby, what use are you to me!"
"Damn, what kind of look is that?"
As the man spoke, he slapped the woman across the face, turning her head to one side.
When she turned her head, her gaze met Gu Baiwei's. Seeing the numbness and despair in Gu Baiwei's eyes, Gu Baiwei's heart skipped a beat.
She was about to go over and stop him, but Shen Yanqing grabbed her wrist: "Don't meddle in other people's business."
