Chapter 9 009 The Cat's Life is in Danger
The rain was continuous, and the leaden clouds hung low. As the car drove along the messy main road of the city, everything around made people feel depressed and irritable.
As the tires rolled over the corpses on the asphalt road, the friction with the rotting flesh produced a chilling, sticky sound.
Xu Luo gripped the steering wheel tightly, so hard that her knuckles turned white.
Chi Yingdong suddenly spoke up, "Speed up."
Her voice was cold and emotionless. Xu Luo shivered with excitement, his body reacting before his mind.
Looking in the rearview mirror, you can see zombies crawling up from behind a fallen lamppost, their gray eyes looking like those of dead fish in the rain.
Xu Luo slammed on the gas pedal, which roared loudly, and he also put some distance between himself and the zombies.
Having shaken off the horde of zombies, Xu Luo parked the car steadily in front of the apartment building and breathed a sigh of relief.
Before she could recover, a silver arc streaked across the sky, and Xu Luo hurriedly reached out to catch it.
Upon receiving the item, Xu Luo discovered it was a set of keys.
At this moment, Chi Yingdong had already opened the car door and gotten out, walking towards the fire escape, his boots making a crisp echo as they stepped on the puddles.
Chi Yingdong: "I live on the top floor. You can come up and find me if there's anything important."
Xu Luo: "Okay."
Xu Luo gripped the key tightly; it was still warm to the touch.
He gives off a similar vibe to Chi Yingdong, seemingly unapproachable, but actually soft-hearted.
Chi Yingdong paused. Xu Luo might have some ulterior motives, but they were all for the sake of her wife and daughter.
Children without parental protection always suffer more, especially now in the apocalypse.
Chi Yingdong clenched his fist, then slowly released it, reminding, "It will only get more chaotic later. We should take advantage of the fact that fewer people are going out to find supplies these next two days and stock up on more."
Xu Luo had just discovered that Chi Yingdong was sweeping through the shopping mall. He realized that after the apocalypse, factories would stop production and supplies would be scarce. He had originally planned to settle his wife and daughter before going to find supplies.
Chi Yingdong's words solidified her resolve. "I understand."
Xu Luo was grateful to Chi Yingdong for reminding her of these things, but saying thank you would be insincere, so she just nodded.
She secretly vowed that if Chi Yingdong ever needed her help in the future, she would definitely do it for him.
Meng Qinghe peered into the pond to look at Chi Yingdong.
She knew why Chi Yingdong let this family live on the 19th floor: it was because of Xu Chuyao.
But why was the person later reminded to stockpile food?
Back home, Chi Yingdong tossed his keys into a celadon bowl in the entryway, the clanging of metal echoing through the house.
Chi Yingdong put the kitten on the ground and then went to the bathroom.
Meng Qing watched quietly as white mist rose from the frosted glass of the bathroom. She had noticed this beforehand, knowing that the first thing Chi Yingdong did when he got home was to take a shower and change into his pajamas.
The waiting period before trial is the most agonizing.
Meng Qinghe curled up in a ball, her emerald pupils widening and contracting with the sound of water, her paws unconsciously scratching at the carpet.
Driven by her tortoise-like mentality, she began to regret admitting it, wishing she had just denied it to the bitter end.
Time seemed to slow down, and Meng Qinghe felt as if she had been waiting for a very, very long time.
Hearing the bathroom door open and close, Meng Qinghe looked up.
Chi Yingdong walked towards her wrapped in a bathrobe. His long hair was not blown dry, but tied up at the back of his head with a dry hair tie. Two strands of hair by his temples hung down in front of his chest, and water was still dripping from the ends of his hair. Water droplets slid down his collarbone and into the deep V-neck.
Watching Chi Yingdong walk barefoot across the oak floor, the faint blue veins on his ankles became faintly visible with each step.
Meng Qinghe instinctively backed away until his back hit the sofa, only then realizing that his escape route was cut off.
With Chi Yingdong blocking her way, she had nowhere to escape.
Meng Qinghe wanted to cry but had no tears.
Chi Yingdong squatted down, the hem of her bathrobe hanging on the floor, revealing the fair skin of her legs.
Meng Qinghe turned her head away uncomfortably.
Chi Yingdong lowered his eyes, his eyelashes casting shadows beneath them, and used his slender fingers to straighten the kitten's head.
Her fingertips were still damp as she gently touched the kitten's trembling nose.
"Your name is Qinghe? Do you have a surname? Are you a cat demon?"
Three questions came at Meng Qinghe in a row, momentarily stunning her.
Meng Qinghe: Huh?
She had considered that Chi Yingdong might suspect that she was also reborn or time-traveled, but she never expected that Chi Yingdong would think of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio.
This interruption actually made Meng Qinghe relax a bit.
"Meow."
no.
Chi Yingdong frowned; she couldn't understand cat language.
But the topic she and the kitten were discussing was not suitable for a third person to hear.
Just as she was thinking, Meng Qinghe nimbly jumped onto the TV cabinet, her bright green eyes quickly scanning the magazine on the table, before her little paws slapped the magazine.
Chi Yingdong looked at the spot where the kitten's paw was pressing, and it was exactly the shape of the character "不" (no).
Is it a coincidence?
Or is it the kitten that can read?
Chi Yingdong asked, "Can you read?"
Meng Qinghe nodded.
Chi Yingdong's eyes darkened slightly. The kitten could even read; things were getting even more interesting.
Once he realized the kitten could read, Chi Yingdong thought about how to communicate with it more simply and efficiently.
She wrote the words "yes" and "no" on an A4 sheet of paper, and then pushed the paper in front of the kitten.
"I'll ask, and you just answer yes or no."
The kitten nodded.
Chi Yingdong asked, "When I spoke to you before, were you able to understand anything?"
After hesitating for a moment, and studying Chi Yingdong's expression, Meng Qinghe finally clapped his paw honestly on the word "yes".
Chi Yingdong suddenly remembered that she had taken the kitten to stockpile supplies before, and suddenly realized that she no longer had her biggest secret in front of the kitten.
During his time living in the apocalypse, Chi Yingdong realized that no one could be relied on or trusted.
Meeting the kitten's wet eyes, reason told her that the kitten knew too much and could not be kept, but influenced by her personal emotions, Chi Yingdong suppressed this thought.
People who have never owned a pet may not understand what it feels like to be depended on by a small life for a lifetime.
Having experienced this feeling, Chi Yingdong doesn't believe there's no bond between himself and the kitten.
After so many days of spending time together, there's no way to fake it.
Chi Yingdong suddenly felt there was no need to ask anymore; what was the point of asking these questions?
Do you get a "yes" or "no" answer?
Even if the kitten's answer didn't meet her expectations, she couldn't bear to do anything to it.
She will take good care of the kitten, and the kitten will only ever be her kitten.
You'll know once you know her secret.
Being able to understand human speech is a good thing; it means they can communicate with each other in the future.
How sensitive a kitten's five senses are!
Meng Qinghe sensed the fleeting killing intent in Chi Yingdong's eyes immediately.
She remembered clinging to Chi Yingdong's trouser leg, insisting on going out with her, and knowing that she had stockpiled supplies.
Once Meng Qinghe understood the reason behind Chi Yingdong's murderous intent, she was filled with regret.
But there's no going back!
Meng Qinghe wondered what she should do if Chi Yingdong planned to kill her.
There's no way to avoid it anyway, so I might as well accept my fate.
Meng Qinghe then realized that Chi Yingdong's murderous intent had dissipated.
She was once again unable to figure out what Chi Yingdong was thinking.
This woman's face is expressionless, yet her inner thoughts keep changing.
Never mind!
Meng Qinghe decided that when Chi Yingdong asked her other questions later, she would need to be reserved in her answers.
However, Chi Yingdong did not ask her again about her ability to understand human speech.
Instead, he reached out and gently scratched her chin, and Meng Qinghe instinctively let out a comfortable snoring sound.
Chi Yingdong: "What do you want for lunch?"
The topic jumped so quickly that Meng Qinghe couldn't keep up.
"Canned food, meow once. Sashimi platter, meow twice. Want to eat my cat food, meow three times."
Meng Qinghe: ? ? ?
Is this going to be my last meal before I'm executed?
"Meow meow".
"Meow meow meow".
Meng Qinghe is giving up; even if she dies, she'll die a well-fed ghost.
She wanted both the sashimi platter and the cat food.
The kitten doesn't usually eat much, so Chi Yingdong asked in surprise, "A sashimi platter plus cat food?"
Meng Qinghe nodded, and at the same time, quickly patted the word "yes" on the paper a few times with her little paws.
Chi Yingdong's lips curled up slightly, his gaze quickly sweeping over the kitten's belly, and he teased, "Eating so much, aren't you afraid I can't afford to feed it? Or are you not going to raise it?"
"Meow meow meow meow!"
When he liked me, he wanted me to eat more, but now that he doesn't like me anymore, he's complaining that I eat too much! You bastard!
Chi Yingdong couldn't understand the string of meows, but he felt they were very vulgar.
"I don't understand your meows, why don't you write something?"
As he spoke, Chi Yingdong took out a children's magnetic drawing board.
Meng Qinghe ignored him, jumped onto the sofa, and found a comfortable spot to curl up.
Chi Yingdong was amused and annoyed. Had she been too indulgent with her? The little one was starting to become unruly.
Seeing that the kitten had closed its eyes and was pretending to sleep, Chi Yingdong sighed and resigned himself to preparing cat food.
After waiting for a while, Meng Qinghe narrowed his eyes to peek and see if Chi Yingdong was still there.
Seeing the busy figure behind the glass door, Meng Qinghe's pupils shrank to slits.
A woman who is stubborn on the outside but soft on the inside.
Meng Qing jumped off the sofa and comfortably sprawled on the floor like a duck.
She really loves underfloor heating!!
Chi Yingdong, who had just finished preparing the sashimi, looked at the kitten's lifeless state, gently poked it with his toe, and said irritably, "Get up and eat."
Meng Qinghe lazily rolled over, slowly got up, and followed Chi Yingdong's steps.
Chi Yingdong placed the sashimi platter on the cat cafeteria, and looking at the cat's belly, his brows slowly furrowed.
It seems like I have a bit of a belly.
Looking back on the kitten's life, it ate and slept, never exercising.
A kitten is a cat, and she can't make a cat exercise.
The kitten could understand human speech, and it was highly likely that it also had a human soul inside it. Chi Yingdong had the idea of letting the kitten train.
Meng Qinghe looked at the sashimi platter, which was full of her favorite ingredients. Sometimes she even felt that Chi Yingdong understood her better than she understood herself.
After enjoying the whole plate of sashimi and a small bowl of cat food, Meng Qinghe lay down contentedly again.
Being a cat is definitely more comfortable than being a human!
Chi Yingdong reached out and poked Meng Qinghe's lower abdomen. The warm, soft touch made her poke it a few more times. "Do you know how dangerous the apocalypse is?"
Meng Qinghe lazily opened her eyes a crack and glanced at Chi Yingdong.
After being transformed into a cat, she found herself becoming lethargic. After eating, she didn't want to move at all and just wanted to lie quietly.
"Meow."
I know.
His tone sounded somewhat self-righteous.
Chi Yingdong sighed helplessly, "Knowing that, you still act like this. Starting tomorrow, you'll have to exercise with me."
"Meow?!"
Meng Qing jumped to her feet.
She wondered if there was something wrong with her ears. Was it really something a human would say to make a cat exercise?
Chi Yingdong glanced at the kitten and asked, "Do you have a problem with that?"
"Meow meow meow meow".
Of course! Whose pet cat exercises like that?
Chi Yingdong couldn't understand cat language; a string of cat language went in one ear and out the other.
"I don't understand. Wait until you can speak human language before you raise any objections to me."
Meng Qinghe: ? ? ?
Making a cat speak human language? Aren't you afraid it might become a spirit?
Meng Qinghe regretted even more that he had admitted he could understand human speech.
