Zheng Xinghai hesitated.
That girl has never been to other places, how could she know where to retreat?
Old Li leaned closer: "Why haven't you been to any other places? If it weren't for this girl, your great-grandfather would have come to pick you up long ago."
Zheng Xinghai quickly said, "Pah, pah, pah, can't you say something nicer?"
Old Li chuckled, "Just kidding, but tell me, how could this girl be so accurate?"
"You believe her?"
Old Li: "It's not that I don't believe it, but we're out of options now, aren't we?"
“Okay, I’ll go ask,” Zheng Xinghai said, “but it’s a fact that you’re the ones coming along. If anything happens, it’s not that girl’s problem, and it has nothing to do with me.”
Seeing how cleanly he shirked responsibility.
Old Li gritted his teeth and said, "No problem, we'll take responsibility if anything goes wrong."
There's nothing he can do now. The villagers have been urging him since early this morning, what can he possibly do?
Zheng Xinghai hesitated, but Old Li urged, "Hurry up, we need to hurry on our way."
Zheng Wenyuan urged, "Father, I went up the mountain last night and all the animals are gone."
Zheng Xinghai knew he couldn't delay any longer, so he walked slowly to Song Hanyan.
"Kid, go ask your wife where we should retreat to next."
Song Hanyan had already made plans with Nan Zhi.
“Village chief, what Zhizhi and I mean is that Yuezhou is rich and prosperous, so we can retreat there.”
I've heard that Yuezhou is a place of beautiful mountains and clear waters, not unlike the most prosperous Sichuan region; it's a place worth visiting.
"Do you know the way?"
Song Hanyan: "It will take at least a month to get there. Zhizhi did business with the Wang family in the city before, so she knows a bit about them. There won't be any problem getting there."
"Great!" Zheng Xinghai clapped his hands. "Nan girl really knows how to do things."
They were worried the girl wouldn't know, but it turns out the couple had planned it all along, waiting for him to ask.
Zheng Xinghai went back and told the village chiefs about the evacuation site.
Everyone packed up and set off.
We hadn't been out of the village for long.
Several groups of people followed behind.
Seeing that they were all farmers, Nanzhi also recognized some familiar faces.
Several villages listened to Zheng Xinghai and followed him in evacuating.
As the mountain village receded into the distance, the villagers would occasionally turn back to look.
Layers of green trees and babbling brooks—this very place will be gone in a few days.
Nanzhi felt quite sorry, but fortunately she had collected all the herbs on the mountain.
Song Hanyan lowered the carriage curtain for her.
Let's go.
And so a long, large contingent set off.
The carriage swayed and rattled for a whole day.
Some people simply cannot endure long journeys.
Especially for some elderly people, whose physical condition is already poor.
Zheng Xinghai saw this and walked to the carriage in front of Nanzhi at the back.
"Girl, why don't we rest for a while?"
Nanzhi lifted the carriage curtain, stepped out, and stumbled, almost falling over.
Fortunately, Song Hanyan helped her up.
Surrounded by forests, Nanzhi dared not risk so many lives.
"Cherry, is there anything dangerous around here?"
After examining them, Cherry said, "Don't worry, Master, they're just small animals. You can hunt them and eat them."
Upon receiving an affirmative answer, Nanzhi said, "Everyone is tired. Let's rest tonight and set off early tomorrow morning."
Many people breathed a sigh of relief.
After working through the night to harvest grain and traveling all day, I simply couldn't take it anymore.
The convoy stopped, and the men gathered firewood while the women started the fire and cooked.
There's nothing complicated; some people just eat the pre-made flatbread, while others boil potatoes.
After a simple meal, everyone took out bamboo mats, spread them on the ground, and lay down to sleep.
Wu Nanshuang laid out a mat for Nanzhi inside the carriage, while she and Weiguo and Weimin each took a mat and slept outside.
It was past midnight when everyone was asleep.
Nan Zhi and Song Hanyan quietly got off the carriage.
Erbao and Sanbao looked around warily, then followed the two men into the grove.
The next morning, before dawn, I heard voices.
Nanzhi opened her eyes, and Song Hanyan came in carrying a bowl.
The steaming broth smelled wonderful.
One bite and I felt completely refreshed.
She was too tired yesterday. By the time she finished eating and cleaning up, most of the villagers had eaten and drunk their fill.
Pack your bags and set off.
As soon as they got on the bus, Erbao and Sanbao looked at Nanzhi with pitiful expressions.
Nan Zhi pressed down on the wolf's head with one hand, "Don't look at me like that. I'm not letting you go out to prevent you from scaring others."
Everyone in her village knew she raised wolves, but people from other villages didn't.
If she releases the wolves, people from the neighboring villages who come to visit will definitely avoid the people of Tai Le Village.
The second and third babies lived without any constraints. For the first time, they stayed in the carriage all day without coming out, eating, drinking, and relieving themselves inside the carriage.
Nanzhi wanted to throw the two of them into the space, but there were other people in the carriage.
We can't be so blatant.
Before they knew it, it was evening again, and the group drove to a flat area.
There were no hills; we could only gaze at the place we had come from in the distance.
Zheng Wenyuan pointed to the small mountain and said, "Dad, isn't that our mountain?"
Zheng Xinghai looked around and said, "It's that mountain."
"Girl, should we stop or keep going?"
Because of the availability of horse-drawn carriages, it is faster than walking, but there are still people who cannot afford to buy one.
These days, their village has overtaken many people thanks to horse-drawn carriages.
Old Li from behind came up and said, "Old Zheng, could you guys slow down? We really can't keep up with the ones behind us."
