Chapter 177 Catching People in the Middle of the Night

In the middle of the night, while everyone was asleep, Nanzhi quietly left the house.

After Nan Zhi left, Song Hanyan opened his eyes on the bed and looked in the direction of the door.

The next day, after everyone finished eating, Nanzhi was about to go to the field to check on the condition of the watermelons.

A carriage slowly pulled up in front of the gate, followed by a dozen or so yamen runners.

Each of them carried a knife and stood in front of Nanzhi's door.

Such a commotion attracted quite a few people.

Seeing that the basket in her hand had been thrown to the ground, Wu Nanshuang hurriedly ran inside to call Nanzhi.

"Master, it's terrible! The soldiers are here."

Each of them carried swords and knives at their waists, looking fierce and menacing, as if they were there to raid someone's home.

Nanzhi paused for a moment, then stood up and walked to the door.

Just as Wu Nanshuang said, however, this carriage looks somewhat familiar.

As Nanzhi approached, she saw a person slowly alighting from the carriage.

"Lord Lin!" Nan Zhi exclaimed in surprise.

Lin Chengyi got off the carriage and straightened his robe.

"Nan girl, it's been a long time."

Nanzhi looked at the people behind him, "Lord Lin, these soldiers."

Seeing that Nanzhi had misunderstood, Lin Chengyi hurriedly explained, "Girl, I heard that our watermelon field was damaged. As an official of Lingshan County, I should do my part. You can take these people to protect our watermelon field."

Our watermelon field?

Nanzhi didn't know what to say.

It happened just yesterday, yet it reached Lin Chengyi's ears so quickly.

This melon patch clearly belongs to her.

However, we happen to be short-staffed recently.

"I appreciate Lord Lin's kindness, and I will accept the man."

Lin Chengyi looked at Nan Zhi with a smile, "Just tell me what you need, and I'll do my best to help you."

Nanzhi wondered why Lin Chengyi had become so kind and helpful.

The reason Lin Chengyi became like this is because the things grown in Nanzhi are indeed beneficial to the country and its people.

It's just potatoes and corn; I've eaten quite a lot of them these past few days, and I've never gotten tired of them.

He naturally wanted to see the newly harvested watermelons.

Secondly, he believes that his rebellious son's achievements today are all due to Nanzhi.

If it weren't for her, Lin Jiaxiang wouldn't have become Zhou Chang's student.

Lin Chengyi looked around, and Nan Zhi understood immediately.

"Does my lord have any other important matters to entrust to me?"

Lin Chengyi came closer and asked, "How is Mr. Zhou's health lately?"

Nanzhi suddenly realized that if she wanted to know about her son's recent situation, she should just say so. Why did she always like to do this?

"Mr. Zhou is in good health, so Lord Lin can rest assured. Your son is exceptionally talented and is humble and friendly, which you like very much."

Lin Chengyi smiled, his eyes crinkling with delight. He hadn't expected his son to be so capable.

However, they quickly realized what was happening.

"I am concerned about the situation, sir. I wonder how Mr. Zhou is doing now?"

Nanzhi: "The teacher is giving a lesson, and it should be almost over. Shouldn't you go and check on him, sir?"

Mr. Zhou is giving a lecture, which means that Lin Jiaxiang is also there.

Lin Chengyi glanced inside and quickly waved his hand, "No, no, these are the people I brought. Lord Nan, please feel free to use them. I have other matters to attend to, so I will leave first."

Wu Nanshuang, standing behind him, asked curiously, "Master, what's wrong with Lord Lin? Why is he leaving in such a hurry?"

Nanzhi smiled and shook her head.

The father-son relationship has been a problem since ancient times.

I want to show my concern, but I don't know how to start.

Looking at the people standing in the courtyard, Wei Guo, who was standing to the side, asked, "Master, what should we do with these people?"

With over a dozen people, food, drink, and lodging were all issues to consider.

Nanzhi thought for a moment, then waved to Weiguo and Weimin, and whispered something in their ears.

In the afternoon, Zhao Hui went home after work.

Several dishes were laid out on the dining table.

For the first time ever, there were slices of meat on the table.

Besides her, the only other person in the family who can cook is her mother-in-law.

Zhao Hui was puzzled, and just then her husband returned. She urged Nan Wenxuan to go to the kitchen to ask.

Nan Wenxuan obediently went to the kitchen: "Mother, what a good day it is today, why is there meat to eat?"

When Shu Zhizhen saw her eldest son, she smiled and said, "I'm in a good mood today, so I bought some meat. Let's have a taste."

Nan Wenxuan was puzzled and continued to ask, but his mother wouldn't say anything.

The family had the best meal they'd had recently.

Zhao Hui was still very puzzled. Why was her mother-in-law, who used to encourage her to smuggle sausages from the cured meat factory back home, completely silent today?

The family sat together and started chatting.

As we chatted, the conversation turned to recent events in the village.

It's a great pity about Nan Wenxuan.

"Many people were looking forward to the watermelon fields, but unexpectedly, this happened at the crucial moment. I heard that even the county magistrate got involved."

Nankai scoffed, "This is what happens when you're not filial to your parents."

“I told you long ago that someone like her wouldn’t have a good ending,” Shu Zhizhen chimed in.

The two of them then proceeded to curse Nanzhi for a long time.

Nan Wenxuan opened his mouth, unsure of what to say.

Finally, Zhao Hui couldn't listen anymore.

"Dad, Mom, I heard that Zhizhi has found a solution over at the melon field, and the watermelon seedlings have survived again."

“Impossible,” Shu Zhizhen suddenly retorted.

With everyone looking at her, Shu Zhizhen finally put down her chopsticks and said, "What I mean is, the melon seedlings have all been cut down, how can they possibly survive?"

Zhao Hui retorted, "Everyone in the village saw it; it's alive."

Seeing that an argument was about to break out, Nan Wenxuan quickly said, "Isn't it enough to just go and take a look? Let's eat, let's eat."

No sooner had she finished speaking than Shu Zhizhen put down her chopsticks and walked out the door.

The family was puzzled, and since Shu Zhizhen had been acting strangely lately, no one took her actions seriously.
