Chapter 29 Yu Xue's Heart Flutters Over the Purple Cotton-padded Jacket
After asking her questions, Yu Xue wiped away her tears and went inside. She kept her head down, picking through the fruit. The two of them also bought several cases of milk and pastries. Yu Xue said she wanted to wander around the area a bit more, so Wen Feng called someone to have the purchases delivered to the hotel reception.
The two strolled around the nearby park. Yu Xue turned her head and said, "Are you not working because of me?"
Wen Feng took her cold hand and put it in his pocket. "Yes. Don't overthink it. I'm your husband. You're sick, so it's only right that I take care of you."
He saw Yu Xue turn her head and smile briefly, then her lips turned down, and she looked dejected. He quickly asked, "What's wrong?"
Yu Xue slowed down her walking pace. "I feel like you love me so much."
She looked up at Wen Feng's chin. "But then I wonder, why do you love me so much? I haven't saved your life or taken care of you. I haven't treated you well since we got married, especially lately. I feel like I've been...very, very bad to you. How can you like me so much?"
She wanted to look into Wen Feng's eyes, but didn't dare, because what she was about to say would sound like accusation. But she couldn't help but ask, "Is it because you and Yu Xue have some secret... that you haven't told me?"
Wen Feng felt that she was about to cry again, so he leaned down and kissed her forehead.
He stroked Yu Xue's hand, reassuring her, "No, there are no secrets. There have never been any secrets between you and me."
Yu Xue: "Then why..."
Wen Feng: "I don't know. Some feelings just come out of nowhere. Actually, well... I don't dare to tell you, for fear of making you angry."
Yu Xue: "What?"
Wen Feng: "When I first met you, I felt sorry for you because you had to beg for pocket money. I agreed to let you stay at my house because I felt sorry for you, not because I liked you."
He turned his head, observing Yu Xue's emotions. "But the longer we spent together, the more I liked this little sister. I found you interesting and cute. On the surface, you always seem quiet, but I know you actually talk a lot. You probably don't even realize how much you've said to me."
Wen Feng: "Tell me why you always hold chopsticks wrong, tell me why you never get pocket money, and tell me about your family and your life. You said you were very lively in elementary school and all your classmates liked you. You said you sang very well and the teachers always let you lead the Children's Day activities."
Wen Feng moved closer to her. "I really enjoy listening to you talk. Every time we start chatting, I lose track of time. After you go home, I think about it every day. Oh dear, you love to talk so much. What will you do if you have no one to talk to at home? Will you get bored? I know your phone gets confiscated regularly, so I wrote you a letter."
Yu Xue wrapped her arms around his arm and leaned on his shoulder.
Wen Feng: "I've always liked you, and that has never changed. I don't know when this liking turned into love, or when I became so deeply in love that I couldn't extricate myself. In short, I now consider you family. If you leave, I don't know where I'll go."
“I’m not leaving,” Yu Xue blurted out.
After she finished speaking, she pursed her lips and shrank her neck slightly, as if surprised by what she had just said.
At that moment, it seemed as if the one controlling her body was not herself, but another Yu Xue.
How could she blurt out that I'm not leaving?
Could it be that she really thinks Wen Feng is more important than her mother?
She released Wen Feng's arm and put some distance between them.
"Come here." Wen Feng grabbed her hand and led her to a stall.
The boss stood up, put his hands in his sleeves, and shouted, "Take a look, take a look!"
The box contained beads of various colors, each engraved with Chinese characters and painted with gold dye—they looked beautiful.
Wen Feng: "Will this paint smudge?"
The shop owner said, "No, look at this on my hand. I've been wearing it for five or six years, and it hasn't fallen off."
“I want four,” Wen Feng said.
The boss said, "Okay, which characters do you want? I'll pick them for you."
Wen Feng wrote down the names of the two people on the paper next to him.
Yu Xue wondered, would he really wear something that's so cheap?
Wen Feng pulled her back, turned his back, and whispered, "Didn't you say that you felt the world was altering your memories? From now on, we'll wear the names on our hands."
Yu Xue certainly didn't mean that. She wasn't afraid she would forget her own name; she was afraid she wouldn't be able to distinguish herself from the other Yu Xue.
However, she still smiled and agreed, "Okay, let's put them on."
Wen Feng certainly understood what she meant; he just didn't know how to respond. He remembered the previous doctor saying that it's best not to break a patient's dream unnecessarily, as she might not be able to handle it. He asked several other doctors afterward, and they all advised against forcibly pulling a patient out of her dream. If a dying person were told that everything she hoped for was false, she could very well die immediately.
We should at least wait until she regains some of her will to live before telling her.
If her life is good enough, even if her dreams are shattered, she won't be unable to get back up.
Wen Feng dared not respond to her directly, yet he could not ignore her. He knew that Yu Xue was prone to overthinking, and he wanted to do something to make her feel that he took her words to heart and that he loved her very much.
He needed to let Yu Xue know that there were people in this world who cared about her, and that there were many people who cared about her.
After the shopkeeper finished stringing the beads, the two of them reached out at the same time to take Yu Xue's string.
Yu Xue looked at Wen Feng, and Wen Feng was also looking at her.
Wen Feng stammered, "Let's...let's exchange hats."
Yu Xue smiled and replied, "Okay, then I'll put it on you."
After hearing the notification sound of the payment being received, the boss went back to his stool and continued looking at his phone.
Yu Xue felt a little embarrassed, so she pulled Wen Feng to a slightly farther place, right next to a flower bush.
After Wen Feng finished putting the beads on Yu Xue, he casually asked, "What kind of flower is this?"
Yu Xue said, "Periwinkle. Chen Wanxi likes these flowers and plants. When we were little, she would point them out to me every time we passed by, and she would take a lot of pictures."
Chen Wanxi rarely had a good mood, and whenever she was in a good mood, Yu Xue felt as if she were bathed in a spring breeze.
She felt that Chen Wanxi must have been a good person before she got married, otherwise she wouldn't have gone back to attend class reunions every year, and so many friends and classmates were willing to help her when she lost her job.
If it weren't for her maternal grandparents and those twisted relatives, she wouldn't have been so extreme, wouldn't have been so eager to pursue her own love, wouldn't have been so eager to marry Yu Xue's father, and wouldn't have caused so much misfortune.
Before getting married, Chen Wanxi thought that Yu Xue's father was just quiet. He was a university teacher, a scholar, and gentle and refined.
After getting married, Chen Wanxi discovered that Yu Xue's father didn't love her at all. He was incapable of loving and didn't believe in love. From beginning to end, he just wanted to find someone to live with.
They all came to the wrong person.
“Periwinkle.” Wen Feng’s voice pulled Yu Xue back to reality. “It has a good meaning. When we get back, we can plant some in the garden. Anyway, I’m not busy now, so I’ll plant them.”
“Okay.” Yu Xue touched the rope in her hand and took his arm. “But we can’t let you plant them alone. We have to plant them together.”
The two walked a little further and then returned to the hotel.
Tonight, Yu Xue was in a great mood, as if the cheap fake beads on her wrist were giving her energy.
But the next morning, she was listless again.
Wen Feng knew that she still needed a lot of energy, a great deal.
It's okay, he'll give it to you.
He was willing to be Yu Xue's energy source.
He stroked Yu Xue's cheek, shook her shoulders, and said, "Get up quickly."
Yu Xue turned over and went back to sleep.
Wen Feng hugged her and pulled her up to lean against the headboard. "Get up and get dressed. We're going to your grandmother's birthday party, remember?"
Yu Xue was so sleepy that she nodded groggily.
An hour later, the two finally finished packing and were ready to leave.
While holding Yu Xue's hand, Wen Feng took out his phone to send a message to Chen Wanxi.
He shoved Yu Xue into the car and said, "Xue Xue, Ms. Chen said she doesn't want to go to Huihe anymore and wants us to pick her up at the entrance of her apartment complex now. What do you think?"
Yu Xue was puzzled, then turned her slow-witted head and realized that the "Ms. Chen" Wen Feng was referring to was Chen Wanxi.
He felt awkward calling Ms. Chen by her first name, and he was afraid that calling her "Mom" would make Yu Xue angry. If he called her "Auntie," Yu Xue wouldn't know who he was calling. So he simply called her "Ms. Chen," just like he would a client.
Yu Xue chuckled softly.
Wen Feng was puzzled. He felt that Yu Xue's emotions were really magical; they would suddenly turn bad and then suddenly get better.
Yu Xue: "Either is fine, then let's go pick her up. It only takes us about ten minutes to drive to Grandma's place, so it's no big deal to meet her a few minutes early."
It's been so long since we last met, it's a little awkward.
"Wait a minute!" Yu Xue suddenly changed her mind again. "No, although I know it's malicious of me to think like this, but... what if her son throws up in the car, or what if he screams and causes an accident in the car? I'm not as tolerant as Meiya."
Wen Feng: "Who is Misae?"
Yu Xue: "Shin-chan's mother".
Wen Feng: "...Oh." He hadn't seen it before and was a little at a loss for words.
He turned his head, fastened his seatbelt, and said, "Okay, I'll do as you say."
The car had been running for about three minutes when Wen Feng suddenly said, "No, not malicious."
Yu Xue thought for a long time before she understood what he was talking about, and couldn't help but laugh out loud again.
Wen Feng wasn't slow to react; he just thought for a long time about how to refute her, and finally realized he couldn't come up with anything nice to say, so he simply gave a blunt rebuttal.
The journey of more than ten minutes was not smooth, not because the road was uneven, but because my heart was unsettled.
Yu Xue was extremely anxious, to the point that she was almost having difficulty breathing.
Honestly, for a long time, she would tremble at the mere sight of Chen Wanxi, let alone have a meal with her.
However, she was too proud to admit her fear of Chen Wanxi, so she kept patting her chest, trying to make Wen Feng misunderstand that she felt tightness in her chest rather than nervousness.
What's meant to happen will happen. Yu Xue felt that the journey that should have taken more than ten minutes was completed in just three minutes.
She turned her head and saw Chen Wanxi standing on the opposite side of the road, holding her child's hand. She shrank back, clearly hearing her own heartbeat, as if her neck had already shrunk into her chest.
As the car gradually came to a stop, the engine noise abruptly ceased, and Chen Wanxi drew closer and closer. She crossed the road and strode towards them.
Just as Chen Wanxi was about to pull open her car door, Yu Xue stood up first and opened the door herself.
She pursed her lips and awkwardly called out, "Mom."
Chen Wanxi looked her up and down.
Yu Xue was wearing her favorite purple cotton-padded coat today. It was very warm and long, which helped to conceal her figure.
Chen Wanxi said, "Why are you dressed like this? This cotton-padded jacket is such an old-fashioned color."
Yu Xue turned her back and walked towards Wen Feng, casually saying, "It's warm here."
Speaking in her dialect, Chen Wanxi said, seemingly complaining, "Other people can endure hardship for the sake of looking good, but you can't even bear a little suffering?"
Yu Xue didn't say anything.
Wen Feng said, "Auntie, Yu Xue just had surgery and can't get cold. She's sick."
Chen Wanxi shut up.
Yu Xue laughed.
It's amazing how this person, no matter how arrogant, will fall silent as soon as a man speaks.
Men are like remote controls for Chen Wanxi.
Does Chen Wanxi really not want to undergo gender reassignment surgery? Yu Xue, however, is somewhat tempted.
