Chapter 17 Awkwardness, Let's Go on a Date
Wen Feng managed to sneak into Yu Xue's room by telling her stories, and even shared a bed with her for one night.
He didn't mind Yu Xue hugging him, clinging to him, and holding him like a large doll; he was just afraid that his unconscious movements in his sleep would wake Yu Xue up.
When he woke up the next day, he found Yu Xue lying in his arms without any hesitation. His body froze instantly, and he didn't dare to move at all, like a wooden doll, afraid that if he turned over or turned his head even slightly, he would wake Yu Xue up.
The next second, Yu Xue opened her eyes.
Wen Feng couldn't help but tense up, as if blaming himself for waking Yu Xue up because his intense inner turmoil had disturbed her.
Yu Xue stared at the face so close to hers, unsure whether she was still half asleep or not awake at all. She stared blankly into Wen Feng's eyes for a full half minute until she couldn't take it anymore and turned away to cough.
"What's wrong?" Wen Feng rushed over, put his arm around her, and tried to pull her into his arms. "You caught a cold? The heating's on in the house, how could you catch a cold when it's so warm?"
Yu Xue sneezed again. "It's nothing."
"It must have been from the swing freezing yesterday." Wen Feng sat up and put on his clothes. "Don't get up yet, you'll catch a cold if you keep going up and down like this. I'll go find you a coat."
"It's okay, it's not cold in the room." Yu Xue got up right away and sneezed again. "It's just a little chilly when I first got out of bed, but I'll get used to it."
Wen Feng turned around and touched Yu Xue's forehead. She didn't have a fever. "Let's put a blanket on her first. We can throw it away when she gets warmer."
He leaned closer, instinctively wanting to kiss Yu Xue's cheek, wanting to feel the warmth of her forehead with his face, but he pursed his lips and didn't do anything.
He turned around, opened the door, left a message saying "Dinner's ready," and hurriedly left.
The atmosphere in the room was too ambiguous. He was afraid that if he stayed for even a second longer, he would become immersed in it and do something he couldn't control.
Yu Xue didn't know why, but seeing Wen Feng's back without turning around made her unhappy, as if he would never come back. She turned her head and looked at the room with the curtains tightly closed, not a single ray of light could get in. She felt so angry that her chest tightened, and she casually slapped a stack of books down, including the one Wen Feng had read to her last night.
She withdrew her hand and rubbed the cool ring on her ring finger.
She didn't like her stubborn personality; she couldn't say anything properly and just kept sulking.
But what can you do if you hate it? You can't change it anyway.
Wen Feng found her a family doctor, but they haven't scheduled a appointment yet. He doesn't dare to make an appointment without Yu Xue's consent; he has to wait until Yu Xue nods in agreement.
This morning I had black rice porridge.
Yu Xue liked this drink, and Wen Feng ladled out a small bowl for her. He was just about to ask her what her plans were for the day when he heard her say irritably, "It's not like I don't have hands."
Wen Feng, quick-witted as ever, immediately said, "It's inconvenient for me to look at your nails."
Yu Xue hummed in agreement and didn't say anything more.
After a long pause, she calmly said "thank you" again.
Wen Feng could tell that she was probably angry again.
But this time it was really sudden, and Wen Feng was completely baffled.
Was it because he got too close just now? His desire to kiss her was so obvious that it was almost entirely written on his face.
“We…” they both began at the same time.
Yu Xue paused in her egg-cracking motion, a smile spreading across her face, indicating that her anger had largely subsided.
But Wen Feng felt that if he finished speaking, Yu Xue wouldn't be so happy. What he wanted to say was: Let's go see the doctor.
He was certain that Yu Xue didn't mean that.
He pretended to be nonchalant and said, "You go first."
Yu Xue said, "Let's go on a date." As she spoke, Yu Xue peeled off the white part of the egg, threw the yolk into a bowl, and ate it with the porridge.
Wen Feng thought she had a good appetite today; she not only drank porridge but also ate eggs, so she must be in a good mood.
He didn't want to spoil the mood, and he really wanted to go on a date with Yu Xue, so he decided to postpone the doctor's appointment.
Yu Xue raised her head slightly. "What were you trying to say?"
Wen Feng hesitated, then lied and said, "I was wondering if you wanted to go out and have some fun to change your mood."
Yu Xue: "Where do you think we should go on a date?"
Wen Feng: "The movie theater?"
Yu Xue pouted: "But there aren't any good movies lately."
Wen Feng remembered that his mother had told him a few days ago that she was going to go winter swimming. Given Yu Xue's condition, winter swimming was out of the question, but soaking in a hot spring would be fine.
Wen Feng: "I know a private hot spring with a great environment and a lot of privacy. Want to go?"
“Okay!” Yu Xue moved her chair forward. “But I don’t have a swimsuit.”
Wen Feng: "I went to buy it."
Yu Xue: "Do you want two rooms or one room?"
Wen Feng's spoon stopped in mid-air. He looked at Yu Xue and said, "Would you like a... double room?"
Yu Xue nodded excitedly. She hadn't gone out to play in a long time. Actually, the idea of going on a date was just a sudden one, but Wen Feng's suggestion hit the nail on the head.
She only went to a hot spring once, with her father, stepmother, and stepmother's daughter.
That time was very unpleasant.
"Wait a minute." Wen Feng picked up his phone. "Let me ask for the exact location. I haven't been there in a long time and I've forgotten where it is. There should still be rooms available."
Yu Xuecai stopped eating and drinking her porridge, dragged a chair to sit next to him, and asked excitedly, "What does that hot spring look like?"
Wen Feng smiled and said, "It's quite beautiful and very large, with both indoor and outdoor areas."
Yu Xue: "Won't there be a lot of people?"
Wen Feng: "It's a private hot spring, just the two of us."
Yu Xue rested her chin on his shoulder, "Did you get it? Did you get it?"
"It won't be that fast," Wen Feng said with a smile. He brought over Yu Xue's porridge and said, "Eat your food first, and you can go after you finish eating."
Wen Feng kept his word. After Yu Xue finished her porridge, he went to get his car keys, told the housekeeper and the chef in the kitchen, and then left with Yu Xue.
Throughout the journey, Yu Xue's lips almost never curled into a smile. She kept imagining what it would be like for her and Wen Feng to soak in a hot spring for the first time.
The two people, wearing only thin swimsuits, sat in the water talking. When they got to a happy part, they would shift their buttocks and get close together, their skin almost touching.
Yu Xue bit her finger and lowered her head, not daring to let Wen Feng know what she was thinking.
On the contrary, Wen Feng was preoccupied with how to keep his distance from Yu Xue. He was afraid that if he got too close, Yu Xue would be unhappy. Hot springs are inherently misty and can easily make people dizzy, let alone a private hot spring where it was just the two of them, and he had ulterior motives.
He was afraid of crossing the line. Yu Xue was now very sensitive; even a hug or a kiss could make her suspicious.
If Yu Xue knew that he had been secretly in love with her all along, would she still dare to continue living with Wen Feng?
It's not far from the hot springs; it only takes three hours to drive there.
Yu Xue kept asking herself, "Will there be flower petals in the hot spring?"
Wen Feng: "I don't remember."
Yu Xue: "Who did you go with before?"
Wen Feng: "Mom and Dad."
"Oh." Yu Xue propped her head up with her hand. "Is the hot spring inside the room?"
Wen Feng: "Outside the room, uh... it's like a backyard."
Yu Xue: "Shall we go together?"
She had asked this question countless times, but Wen Feng still answered her patiently, "Yes."
Suddenly, a car came into view, and Yu Xue's expression froze.
Wen Feng turned around and found her staring blankly at the car opposite. He looked over in confusion; it looked familiar. But Wen Feng was certain it wasn't Yu Xue's parents' or any of Yu Xue's other relatives' car.
Whose car could make her unhappy?
The next second, he found out.
The car door opened, and a long-haired woman wearing a black fitted dress and sunglasses got out of the car. She smiled and walked towards them; it was Lin Yinyin.
Yu Xue wasn't unhappy, she was just embarrassed.
That day, at Lin Yinyin's birthday party, almost everyone came to ask her something, asking why she was injured, whether it was a suicide attempt like the rumors online, if she was feeling down, how she was feeling, and why she wasn't working.
Every question left her at a loss. She knew those people meant no harm; some were genuinely concerned, while others were just curious. They certainly weren't there to laugh at her.
But she just felt utterly ashamed.
In fact, after yesterday, she had made up her mind to stop socializing. She locked herself in her room, stopped talking to people outside, and stopped letting anyone know anything about herself.
Wen Feng opened the car door and greeted Lin Yinyin first, followed by Yu Xue.
A man got out of the passenger seat of the car opposite.
Lin Yinyin took the man's arm and smiled, "My boyfriend, Nan Pan."
"Oh..." Yu Xue didn't know what to say.
Lin Yinyin put her sunglasses back on and said with a smile, "We haven't announced it yet, so we didn't invite him to the birthday party that day. But we'll announce it soon, so there's no need to hide it. Since you bumped into him first, let's get to know each other."
She stretched out her hand to Yu Xue, "You're the first person to know my secret, even before my best friend. Keep it a secret, okay?"
Yu Xue trembled when she heard "best friend." She used to be Lin Yinyin's best friend, but because of her own problems, she lost that honor.
She carefully reached out and took Lin Yinyin's hand.
They often shook hands in high school. They would shake hands when they got all the questions right, when they guessed the right answer, when they passed the physical fitness test together, and even when they skipped art class to eat hamburgers at a coffee shop.
How familiar those hands were with her.
Lin Yinyin was the first to let go of her, pulled down her sunglasses, winked at her, took her boyfriend's arm, and went inside confidently.
She has excellent posture and learned Latin dance when she was young. She walks beautifully, acts elegantly, and looks good on camera. Yu Xue has always admired her.
She didn't want outsiders to think that her relationship with Wen Feng was just so-so, so she imitated Lin Yinyin, took Wen Feng's arm, and said, "Let's go."
Wen Feng felt a little regretful. He could see that Yu Xue was uncomfortable, and he should have chosen a place further away.
However, it's not too late to change places now, so he asked, "Should we go somewhere else?"
Yu Xue: "No, it's not that we don't get along, it's just... a little awkward. Let's go, don't let her misunderstand."
