"Dad, you've worked hard. Don't compare yourself to your third uncle. He earns his money through speculation and trickery. He's not like us."
“You’re right, almost all of his money came from speculation.”
The disheartened father and son successfully comforted each other.
"Dad, eat more tonight, because we won't have such good food again."
"You too, we were careless yesterday and ate too much rice. Don't eat so much rice tonight, eat more vegetables, eat good vegetables, and eat less vegetables, okay?"
“Father, you’re right. Tonight we won’t have any extra rice, we’ll just have meat.”
"I think so too..."
"Xiao Lei hasn't returned yet?"
Zhao Dawen wanted to find him and ask him to tutor him for a while, but found that he hadn't returned by dinnertime.
"He's fallen behind in his studies, so he'll definitely be coming home very late these days."
Aren't you going to eat?
"The academy has a canteen, and you can also buy things outside. There are all kinds of shops around the academy."
Zhao Dawen felt he had asked an incredibly stupid question. Could he possibly starve himself? His personal servant would take good care of him.
It's a real shame that I probably won't be able to ask about my own son anymore.
When they finished eating, Zhao Dashu's family was completely speechless. Zhao Dawen and his son only ate the meat dishes, and a plate of braised pork was almost half gone in the blink of an eye.
Zhao Dashu barely managed not to throw the man out. His older brother's behavior was truly appalling. His father should be brought back to life to see what kind of person his good son was now.
Who would spoil him? Zhao Dashu picked up a plate of chicken, and everyone at the table took two pieces. He also divided up the remaining braised pork.
Don't think that only he can eat; their mouths aren't carved from wood.
Zhao Dawen paused, his chopsticks still. Was the third brother trying to steal his food? That bastard! He gets to eat delicious food every day, while he? Starting tomorrow, he'll be living a miserable life of eating only cabbage and radishes.
She wouldn't eat the good food herself; she would save it all for her son.
In order to eat more meat, Zhao Dawen went all out and started fighting with Zhao Dashu for food at the table. Everyone else stopped eating, thinking that Zhao Dashu was being extremely childish.
Song tugged at her husband's clothes, signaling him to stop, and ordered the kitchen to prepare two more meat dishes.
Zhao Dashu didn't actually want to eat it; it just seemed more interesting and flavorful to steal it.
After the meal, Zhao Dawen pulled his son along and stormed off.
Zhao Xiaoyu lowered her head and chuckled. Her uncle seemed to have aged a bit, and so did her own father. Could the two of them get any more bored?
"Your uncle is not only petty, but he also loves to take advantage of others."
"Dad, stop talking. If you hear me, believe me, I'll come out and start arguing with you."
Zhao Dashu's eyes widened, and he rolled up his sleeves. "Afraid of him?"
“I’m afraid of him. Xiao Lei will be back to study later, and Youfu will also be studying after dinner. Let’s not disturb them. Especially my eldest cousin, do you believe that if you disturb his studies, his uncle will really fight you to the death? If he fails the exam, it will all be our fault.”
Zhao Dashu snorted coldly. It was something he was capable of doing. He was never wrong; only others were.
When Xiao Lei returned and heard about this, he just smiled faintly, "If my cousin is determined to study, it doesn't matter where he is. I was already surprised that Dad spent a whole day helping them find a house."
He's right. Studying depends entirely on personal talent and self-discipline; where you study isn't important. However, the teacher is extremely important, and she didn't think her uncle was a good teacher.
Whether one's knowledge is sufficient is another matter; being too eager for quick success is misguided.
The following morning, Zhao Dawen and his son reluctantly left the Zhao family farm under the "escort" of the housekeeper.
Upon arriving at the rented courtyard, Zhao Dawen began tidying up the house, letting his son go to school first.
"Father, where's the woman you found?"
"She'll be here tomorrow, so just make do for today. She'll clean the yard and house when she arrives tomorrow, and she'll also cook the meals."
Today, he just needs to clean up their room first. He's a rough guy and not fussy. He'll go out and buy a few steamed buns later, and that'll be enough for the meal.
Zhao Dawen smacked his lips. The cook at Lao San's house was really good at cooking. He already missed it as soon as he left.
