Chapter 7 Preparing to go to my maternal grandparents' house

Lin Ru smiled and said, "I learned it from a wandering Taoist priest."

"I think he passed it on to me so that I could pass it on to more people! So doctor, I also hope that you can pass it on to more people and save more lives."

The old doctor was deeply moved. He not only refused to accept the medicine but also repeatedly promised to carry forward this technique.

Lin Ru did not refuse. With war imminent, she needed to buy so many things, and she was truly too poor.

Their conversation was overheard by the young man in brocade robes who had come to apologize. He turned around and ordered his servants, "Find out this person's background and report back to me."

The servant boy beside him replied, "Yes, young master!"

Then he turned and left.

Lin Ru was completely unaware that her conversation with the old doctor had been overheard and that someone was planning to investigate her.

After she finished talking with the old doctor, she turned and left. She squeezed the purse the lady had given her; it felt light and fluffy, and it was clearly filled with silver notes.

She looked at the family, who were clearly malnourished.

With a wave of her hand, she exclaimed, "Come on! I'll take you to get something delicious!"

So the group pulled the cart to a small restaurant.

Several people helped Bai down, and the restaurant waiter showed no favoritism, even helping her put her cart away.

Arrange for a few people to sit by the window, where they can see the location of the small cart.

The waiter brought over the menu with a smile, and Lin Ru first handed the menu to Bai Shi.

Bai awkwardly rubbed her worn-out clothes. She had been educated before she got married, so when she glanced at the menu, she was bewildered by the prices.

Lin Ru reassured her family, "It's alright! Count! I have money here!"

Bai felt slightly relieved, but still ordered the cheapest stir-fried vegetable dish.

Lin Ru looked at her three younger brothers, who were also a little shy and hesitant: "The three of you must each order one!"

Lin Qing, the youngest of the group, couldn't contain her excitement and, with the help of the waiter, ordered a roast chicken.

Lin Mo and Lin Bai each ordered a vegetarian dish.

Lin Ru sighed when she saw that apart from the roast chicken, which was a meat dish, all the other dishes were vegetarian. She then ordered braised pork, braised fish, stir-fried meat, and stewed pork knuckle.

Lin Ru wanted to order more, but Bai Shi stopped her.

Bai smiled and said to the waiter, "That's all! We'll add more if you're still hungry."

Lin Ru could only smile helplessly: "Alright! I'll listen to you, Mother! That's all! And give us five bowls of fine white rice and two bowls of wontons! Thank you!"

The waiter said, "Alright! Please wait a moment, gentlemen!" and then left.

As soon as he left, Lin Qing cheered with a smile, "Yay! I actually ate at a restaurant, and I even ordered my own food! I'm going to brag about it to Xiao Hu and the others when I get back!"

Lin Bai was very happy: "Yes! This is my first time eating out! I've ordered some food too!"

Lin Ru looked at the taciturn Lin Mo, and her face flushed with excitement.

"You three! You're so happy right now! How about we go to Manchunlou for a meal sometime? You'll be living the high life!"

Lin Qing exclaimed

"Manchunlou! Can we really go there?! The village chief's son, Xiaobao, just passed by Manchunlou and came back bragging about it for ages!"

Seeing the children smiling happily, Mrs. Bai still asked in a low voice with some concern, "Daughter! Do you have enough money? We ordered so much!"

Lin Ru patted her reassuringly.

"That's enough! Don't worry, Mother! The lady also gave quite a lot!"

Seeing this, Bai felt relieved and didn't suggest taking the money for safekeeping.

Because in her view, what her daughter earns belongs to her daughter.

Lin Ru was very satisfied with this!

After the dishes were served, the group began to enjoy their meal.

Lin Ru ate a bite of vegetables and a mouthful of white rice, and tears of happiness almost streamed down her face.

God knows how bland those dishes that only have salt added are.

The Bai family members also ate with relish.

Sure enough, a few bowls of rice weren't enough, so the group shared two more bowls of wontons.

Watching the three boys wolf down their food, Lin Ru couldn't help but sigh silently: They really are just kids! They're going to eat their father out of house and home!

After they finished eating, Madam Bai suddenly said, "I want to discuss something with you! I want to take you back to your maternal grandparents' home!"

Lin Ru was surprised. She remembered that there was no such maternal grandparent family in the original book! She had thought that Bai's maternal family had all died out!

Seeing the surprised looks on her children's faces, Madam Bai slowly said, "I haven't mentioned them to you in recent years! It's because back then! Your maternal grandfather didn't agree to my marriage with your father!"

"So... I broke ties with my family! I resolutely married your father."

"As you all know, we haven't been doing well these past few years! So I'm ashamed to go back."

"But now... I want to help you live a good life! I also want you to have someone to rely on!"

Lin Ru thought about it and realized that if she continued to live in this place, given the hatred the Lin family harbored towards her, things would definitely not end well.

She wasn't afraid, but she couldn't guarantee that she could be by their side every moment.

"Mother! I don't object to you taking us back to your maternal grandparents' house! But I still want to say that nowadays we can't rely on anyone but ourselves."

“When you broke with your maternal family and got together with your father, it was without a matchmaker or betrothal, so the blow to your maternal grandparents was enormous.”

"You haven't been in touch for so many years!"

"If... I mean if, my maternal grandfather's family can't accept us, Mother, you must take care of yourself."

However, if she tries to kill herself again, Lin Ru will not interfere.

Bai knew what her daughter meant. To put it nicely, it meant no betrothal or marriage; to put it bluntly, it meant an unrequited love affair and elopement.

She made up her mind: "I've made up my mind! I'm going to take you back! I'll accept it no matter what!"

Lin Bai: "Mother! No matter where we go, as long as we're together, that's home!"

Madam Bai smiled and said, "Don't worry! No matter what happens, I will never do anything rash again!"

Seeing that Bai finally smiled, the group felt much relieved.

Lin Ru originally wanted to buy some daily necessities and stock up on some other things in preparation for the upcoming war and famine, but now she has to rethink her plans.

Time is now more of a constraint!

Lin Ru asked Bai Shi, "Mother! Where is my maternal grandfather's house? Is it far away?"

Bai thought for a moment and said, "It would take four days to walk there!"

Lin Ru sighed. She really didn't understand how Bai Shi and the other person knew each other from such a long distance.

How could Bai Shi have followed her scumbag father for four days just to marry him?!

Isn't she afraid of being kidnapped?

Is this the power of love?

Seeing the puzzled looks on her children's faces, Bai felt a little embarrassed: "Your father...he..."

Lin Ru immediately interrupted Bai Shi, who was blushing.

"Mother! If you're too embarrassed to say it, then don't! Let's go see if they sell horse-drawn carriages or donkey carts!"

Lin Ru called the waiter to settle the bill.

The waiter smiled and said, "One tael of silver in total!"

Lin Ru took out a tael of silver from her sleeve—actually from her spatial storage—and handed it to the waiter: "Waiter! Do you know if there are any horse-drawn carriages or donkey carts for sale nearby?"

The waiter smiled and said, "If you and your companions are planning a long journey, I suggest you buy a donkey cart to avoid being targeted by unscrupulous people. There's one in the fifth alley to your right after you leave the house."
