Chapter 67 Why are you here?
It started to rain when Lin Jingchuan came out of the company.
The air outside the office building was as humid and hot as a steamer with the lid removed, and it rushed towards me the moment the elevator door opened.
Lin Jingchuan closed his eyes and took a deep breath. It took him a while to break free.
After driving back to the community, he went upstairs to get some clothes. Xu Mo told him last night that she planned to stay at home for a while.
He also expected to stay there with her for a while. After checking the weather in Nanshi, which was even much hotter than Guangzhou, Lin Jingchuan grabbed some summer casual clothes and two books and left home.
He bought a ticket, called a taxi, and went to the community gate with his luggage to wait.
The hot raindrops fell into the soil of the community flower garden, bringing with them a strong earthy smell mixed with the smell of rotten leaves and grass.
A car stopped in front of Lin Jingchuan, and he looked at the taxi app.
This is not the car he took.
The car he called was black, but the one in front of him was white.
The double flash lights pierced the rain curtain, and a man slowly got out of the car, holding a black umbrella, and walked towards him from the rain curtain.
Having not seen him for more than ten years, his face had become very blurry in his mind, and it was even less clear through the rain. It even took Lin Jingchuan a while to recognize who this middle-aged man was.
Lin Jingchuan's expression remained calm, as if he had expected him to come, but his brows were subconsciously furrowed.
Lin Hui walked up to him and said, "Jingchuan, let's talk."
Lin Jingchuan looked at the face that had already blurred in his memory, his face calm: "I'm leaving. The high-speed train will be in an hour."
"Where are you going?"
Lin Jingchuan didn't respond.
"South Station or North Station?" Lin Hui said, "I'll take you there."
Lin Jingchuan got into his car. After the door was closed, the sound of rain outside was blocked out and the silent atmosphere in the car lasted for about five minutes.
It was Lin Hui who spoke first: "I heard that you are married."
"Haven't you seen her already?" Lin Jingchuan looked indifferently at the water droplets on the windshield, which were blown away as soon as they formed a dense layer.
Lin Hui smiled awkwardly: "Yes, I met her once."
He gripped the steering wheel tightly. "You're getting married. Dad's happy for you. Even though we've only been together for half an hour, I can tell she's a smart girl with a good education and experience. She's a perfect match for you."
Lin Jingchuan still didn't say anything, half-closing his eyes and looking at the rain on the windshield.
Lin Hui looked at him cautiously and explained, "Oh, it's like this. Ever since I heard about your marriage, I've been wanting to meet her. But we haven't been in touch for a long time, and I was afraid that if I told you directly that I wanted to see her, you would refuse, so I asked her to come over under the guise of an interview. During the few minutes we met, I didn't dare mention your name."
Lin Jingchuan finally looked at him: "What's so bad about it?"
Seeing that he finally paid attention to him, Lin Hui's eyes flashed with joy, and then he lowered his eyes and smiled somewhat self-deprecatingly, "...I'm afraid that you would be unhappy if you knew I was looking for her. After all, I'm different from you. I haven't received much education. I'm just a local boss, and I'm not as capable as your uncle."
“…”
Lin Jingchuan's gaze fell on his somewhat cautious profile, and his bony fingers tightened slightly.
"Even though you never said it, I know you blame me. You blame me for remarrying shortly after divorcing your mother and having several children." The car turned onto an off-ramp, and Lin Hui looked at the highway ahead. "Perhaps you still resent me in your heart for not taking you away, for letting you live under someone else's roof for so many years."
"But even after all these years, if I could make the choice again, I would still let you stay in the Fei family," Lin Hui said. "Back then, I had nothing. I lived in a ten-square-meter rental house and ate twenty-yuan boxed lunches a day. What could I possibly give you? You've been pampered and smart since childhood. If you stayed in the Fei family, you'd have been well-dressed and well-fed. You wouldn't have to suffer materially, and you'd have better educational opportunities. So if I could make the choice again, I would still keep you in the Fei family."
"I'm old." Lin Hui laughed self-deprecatingly. "The older you get, the more ashamed you feel towards those you've wronged. In recent years, I've always wanted to come find you, but I've never had the courage. I still don't dare to face you. But when I came here today and you didn't refuse to talk to me, I finally feel relieved. Jingchuan, you're great."
Lin Jingchuan closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and tried hard to suppress the strangeness in his heart.
"Did you come to me today just to tell me this?"
Lin Hui shook his head: "There is something I want to discuss with you."
"I've been running a company for years. Although it's small, it's always had a stable customer base and income. I've been doing this for years, but now I'm getting old and can't do it anymore," Lin Hui said. "I heard about the recent management changes at Landa. You must be struggling with this. Why don't you quit and come take over your own company? You're capable, and working for yourself is worse than being a professional manager."
Lin Jingchuan slowly turned his head and looked at the man in the driver's seat. Lin Hui looked straight ahead, but his eyes flickered slightly, and he didn't dare to look at him.
"You mean, you feel like you owe me something because you're getting older, so you want me to inherit your company?" Lin Jingchuan smiled. "Is that so?"
Lin Hui nodded hurriedly: "Yes, that's it."
Lin Jingchuan suddenly turned his head to look at his profile, but Lin Hui didn't dare to look him in the eye. Lin Jingchuan looked at him and suddenly laughed. He looked away and half closed his eyes: "Why do you think I would be willing to take over your company?"
Lin Hui was slightly stunned.
"If it's really a good thing, would your wife and three daughters be willing to give it to me?"
Lin Hui's breath was choked.
Lin Jingchuan said calmly, "Your company has major operational problems and is currently facing three lawsuits. This is just the surface issue. Only you know how many hidden risks lie behind the scenes." Lin Jingchuan's expression gradually turned cold. "You gave me the company not because you wanted to make up for your debt to me, but because you wanted me to help you deal with this mess and protect your family business so that you and your family can live a worry-free life for the rest of your life, right?"
Lin Hui swallowed his saliva: "Jingchuan, you can't think like that. You are my son, how could I harm you?"
"Then what should I think?" Lin Jingchuan smiled. "Should I believe in pie-in-the-sky deals? My father, who has already remarried and had children and hasn't cared about me for over a decade, suddenly wants to give me a huge gift after I get married, a company that easily makes a million dollars a year? Even if you want it, I'm afraid your new family won't agree."
He whispered, suppressing his grief, "Lin Hui, do you really think I'm stupid, or do you think the father-son bond between us is strong enough for me to take the initiative to help you take the blame?"
"Jingchuan, the situation isn't as bad as you think..." Lin Hui was a little flustered. "I'm your biological father, how could I harm you? The company is indeed facing some financial problems now, but the customer base accumulated over the years is still there. As long as we can recover this time, there will be great potential in the future. I just saw that you have worked for the Fei family for so many years, and the effort and reward are not proportional, so I told you this..."
Lin Jingchuan stopped talking and sat in the car with his eyes closed to rest.
Lin Hui also fell silent.
It wasn't until he sat down on the not-so-soft high-speed train seat that he felt the weight of the burden lift from his heart. Outside the window, clouds hung low in the sky, a dark mass like a gray rag about to fall. The air conditioning on the high-speed train, mixed with the distinctive smell of disinfectant inside the train, seeped into every inch of his skin.
Lin Jingchuan leaned against the window frame of the high-speed train, closing his eyes but still unable to fall asleep.
After getting off the car, he took a taxi directly to Xu Mo's house.
He had been there during the Chinese New Year and still remembered the name and house number of the community.
He looked at the house, the windows were lit with warm yellow lines, and the chenille curtains hung on the bay windows, a warm light in the dark night.
Lin Jingchuan curled the corners of his lips and went upstairs.
It seemed that Xu Mo's house had a new door, from the original old wooden door to a light gray carved aluminum door. He thought he had made a mistake and checked it several times.
He stopped at the door, his finger bones resting on the cold metal door panel for a moment, and heard a not unfamiliar male voice and a very familiar female voice coming from inside the house.
"I'm leaving first. I'll be staying in a hotel outside for the time being. We'll go see Uncle Xu together tomorrow..."
"Okay, drive carefully at night..."
The curve of Lin Jingchuan's lips slowly disappeared, and two seconds later, the door opened from the inside.
Xu Mo raised her eyes and saw the man who suddenly appeared at the door.
He was wearing a simple light grey polo shirt and business trousers. His face showed obvious depression and fatigue, and his eyes fell between her and Zhao Tingyu.
Zhao Tingyu seemed not to notice the person at the door. He lowered his eyes to look at the woman who was seeing him out and said:
"Think about what I told you at noon..."
Xu Mo didn't respond for a long time. Zhao Tingyu realized something was wrong, turned his head, and saw Lin Jingchuan standing at the door.
The man outside the door closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, his expression turned colder: "Zhao Tingyu, why are you here?"
