Chapter 121 Eating Sunflower Seeds

Finding a power outlet, Hao Ran quickly plugged in his walkie-talkie battery, plopped down on the sofa, and warmed himself by the charcoal brazier. "This is so comfortable. Brother Zhao, you go ahead and do your thing. I'll call you when it's done charging."

"Oh right, how many points?" He hadn't forgotten that Zhao Xiaoxiu had said in the public chat that it would be a paid service.

Zhao Gang closed the door expressionlessly. "Ten points for recharging the walkie-talkie."

He was about to go upstairs when Zhao Xiaoxiu heard the noise downstairs and ran down herself.

Behind them followed Sister Monkey, who was also very curious about the stranger.

Hao Ran had already heard that Zhao Gang's family had brought back an evolved macaque, but when he actually saw it, he was so frightened that he jumped up from the sofa and retreated three meters away.

Zhao Xiaoxiu chuckled, and Monkey Sister chirped mockingly as she circled around to the new human, jumping up and down and scrutinizing him.

Hao Ran: I dare not move, I dare not move at all!

He could only look to Zhao Gang for help: "Brother Zhao, please save me—"

Zhao Gang's lips curled up, and he handed the roasted melon seeds in his hand to Zhao Xiaoxiu. The father and daughter sat down on the sofa, watching him being made fun of by the monkey while eating melon seeds.

However, Zhao Xiaoxiu knew her place. Seeing that Hao Ran's face had turned pale with fright, she waved her hand and said, "Sister Monkey, come and eat something delicious!"

The evolved macaque, as tall as a human and even appearing more robust, finally left. Hao Ran felt a wave of relief wash over him, leaned against the door, and let out a long sigh.

"This is truly terrifying," he exclaimed, patting his chest.

Seeing how relaxed and comfortable Zhao Xiaoxiu and her father were with the macaque, Hao Ran guessed that this evolved macaque was completely different in temperament from the brutal mutant.

He took two deep breaths, mustered his courage, and went to the charcoal brazier. He squatted down opposite Sister Monkey, warming himself by the fire while sniffing the air. He asked in surprise, "What are you eating? It smells amazing!"

Zhao Xiaoxiu opened her palm, revealing a handful of brown melon seeds.

The mutated sunflower seeds are first brined to remove the bitterness and add a salty and savory flavor.

After being dried, the seeds are stir-fried in a clay pot. The resulting sunflower seeds are dark brown inside and out, and they taste crispy and fragrant. The original slight bitterness has become very faint, giving them a unique flavor.

Monkeys probably can't resist the temptation of dried fruit. The monkey stuffed a handful of sunflower seeds into her three-lobed mouth, chewed and chewed, and finished off a handful of sunflower seeds in no time, spitting out a pile of sunflower seed shells.

Zhao Gang reminded him with displeasure, "No spitting."

Monkey Sister quickly composed herself, grabbed a handful of sunflower seeds and stuffed them into her mouth. While chewing, she nimbly got up and went to the door to get a broom, sweeping the sunflower seed shells she had just spat on the ground outside.

The entire sequence of movements was executed with such fluidity and skill that it was almost painful to watch.

Hao Ran gave Zhao Gang a thumbs up in admiration, "You're awesome for training an evolved macaque like this!"

After flattering him, he reached out to grab a handful of sunflower seeds.

The father and daughter simultaneously pulled open the plate of melon seeds, but Hao Ran's outstretched hand found nothing.

The young man stared at the father and daughter in disbelief.

Zhao Xiaoxiu held up two fingers, "20 points per tael."

Hao Ran: "Xiao Xiu, are you sure you didn't use the wrong unit?"

It should be jin (a unit of weight), right?

Zhao Xiaoxiu answered very seriously: "You didn't use the wrong number. It's 20 points per tael. When Dad bought it, it cost 10 points per tael. He also worked hard to process it for a long time and used a lot of seasonings to make it taste so good. If it weren't for you, Brother Haoran, I wouldn't have been willing to sell it for 20 points per tael."

The little girl said, with an expression that said, "I'm only doing this because I'm close to you," and grabbed five sunflower seeds and put them in his hand. "These are for you. If you want more, you'll have to buy some."

Hao Ran: "...Thank you."

He'll have to savor these melon seeds carefully, since they cost 20 points per 50 grams!

He deliberately peeled them one by one, then put them in his mouth one by one... Holy crap, they smelled amazing!

I promptly transferred 20 points to Zhao Gang, just to exchange for a couple of coins to satisfy my craving for food.

Zhao Xiaoxiu immediately ran to get a cup, filled it to the brim, and handed it to him.

Two adults, one baby, and one monkey sat around the charcoal brazier, cracking sunflower seeds.

Eating sunflower seeds without gossiping just feels like something's missing, so Hao Ran brought up the old house with its lights on nearby and asked curiously:

What are the personalities like of the two new lords? Are they easy to get along with?

Zhao Xiaoxiu: "There's a girl I like."

"Oh, now Kosode will have company."

Hao Ran then worried about the new lords: "They came later and didn't have time to plant rapeseed and potatoes. They won't have a harvest after spring, so they'll probably have to go into the mountains to hunt for points."

Zhao Xiaoxiu: "It should be. They don't seem to have many points."

Hao Ran clicked his tongue twice. "But why did they suddenly want to farm when they were living peacefully in the city? Did they get into some trouble and can't stay in the city anymore?"

Zhao Xiaoxiu: "I don't know."

"......"

The two, one big and one small, chatted enthusiastically, and before they knew it, they had finished off a cup of sunflower seeds.

Hao Ran wiped the sunflower seed shells off his lips, stood up, and asked, "Is there any water to drink?"

Zhao Gang pointed to the charger with the green light on: "You should go now."

Sensing the hidden danger in Brother Zhao's eyes, Hao Ran helplessly shrugged at Zhao Xiaoxiu, unplugged the charger, paid the charging fee, and left, looking back every few steps.

Just before the door closed, he didn't forget to say to Zhao Xiaoxiu, "I'll come again tomorrow!"

I also brought a flashlight that was out of power to charge.

I'll also join in the fun of the new lords' arrival.

Zhao Xiaoxiu took it as just a polite remark, yawned widely, and joined Sister Monkey's cleaning team. Together they swept up all the sunflower seed shells, washed their faces and feet, and went upstairs to sleep.

Oh right, I also need to review the idioms I learned yesterday before bed.
