Chapter 138 Shock

"Brother Gangzi!"

The father and daughter had just stepped out of the hotel when they ran into Meng Er, who was rushing over, panting.

Granny Meng and Meng Da walked a little slower behind, waving to signal them not to stop and to hurry back to the city center.

The high wall was right behind the low-rent housing area. Looking up, all the searchlights on the tower were turned on, illuminating the scorched earth outside the high wall and tracking the figure of the giant mutated python.

The rustling sound of a bulldozer drilling into the ground drifted through the high walls. Just hearing this noise, Zhao Xiaoxiu automatically pictured a giant python rapidly slithering across the scorched sand, heading straight for the city.

With a loud "boom," the guards launched an attack on the giant mutated python that was hurtling towards them.

Separated by only a wall, the sound of the explosion seemed to be right next to their ears. The residents who were evacuating on the street were shocked, paused for a moment, and then continued to evacuate to the outer city center.

Zhao Xiaoxiu and her father followed behind the Meng family mother and her two children, jogging forward through the crowd.

There were many people and vehicles, but with guards standing up to maintain order, the evacuation went relatively smoothly.

Zhao Xiaoxiu overheard someone next to her say, "Our group followed the authorities to set up many traps three kilometers outside the city today. We were well prepared this time, so this giant mutated python definitely won't break through the high wall!"

This prompted another voice to chime in, "Don't panic too much. Can't our human brains outsmart those mutants? Even an S-class giant mutant python couldn't withstand many nuclear bombs..."

The sound behind was suddenly interrupted.

A roar, seemingly from the ancient, wild earth, came from behind them. It seemed to emanate from underground, causing the ground to tremble. Or perhaps it came from the void of deep space, accompanied by 360-degree surround sound.

Everyone in the city heard the chilling roar at the same time. It was as if God had suddenly pressed the pause button. Everyone stopped in their tracks and slowly turned around to look at the high wall, as if in slow motion.

A giant snake's head rose from the high wall, and countless searchlights shone on it, revealing its true form to the public.

The dark red scales, each the size of a floor tile, reflected a cold light under the lamp. The emerald green triangular eyes were ten times larger than the searchlight, and because they were directly illuminated by the light, a translucent white membrane covered the eyeballs.

It angrily tore open its mouth, revealing sharp, sword-like teeth inside. A forked tongue swept towards the tower, which, from a human perspective, looked like a giant crane chain swinging down on it.

The fully armed soldiers on the wall looked as tiny as ants compared to its enormous snake head.

The enormous snake head was reflected in Zhao Xiaoxiu's dark pupils, her mouth slightly open, shocked by its sheer size.

It turns out that the name "giant mutant python" was a realistic description.

Just by seeing a snake's head, one can imagine just how terrifyingly large its body must be, coiled beneath the high wall.

Zhao Xiaoxiu recalled the deep ditch she and her father had encountered yesterday. If that ditch was the mark left by the giant mutated python, then its body diameter must be at least fifty meters.

What does fifty meters mean?

That's a quarter of a 400-meter track.

The high wall probably looked like a chicken coop to it, and the humans inside were like chicks being raised there.

It's unimaginable how happy and carefree the giant mutated python would be, freely roaming its 'chicken farm' if this high wall weren't there.

"What are you all standing there for! Get up and move! They're about to open fire on the wall!" the guards maintaining order shouted angrily.

The people, who were shocked by the huge snake head protruding from the wall, finally came to their senses and hurried towards the safe zone.

Zhao Xiaoxiu and the others were swept along by the crowd and successfully reached a safe area.

No sooner had they entered than a barrage of cannon fire erupted from the high walls, the towering flames illuminating the entire city as if it were daytime.

The continuous, deafening sound of artillery fire echoed outside the walls, while the helpless yet fearful roars of the giant mutated python reverberated.

The three members of the Meng family, mother and sons, covered their ears tightly, otherwise their heads would ache from the loud noise.

Zhao Xiaoxiu quickly covered her ears, but her powerful hearing still allowed her to clearly hear the sounds coming from outside the wall.

She frowned in pain, realizing for the first time that having excellent hearing wasn't a good thing.

Looking up at his father, Zhao Gang, on the wall, he neither covered his ears nor showed any facial expression. He simply stared silently at the enormous mutated python on the high wall, which was enraged by the dense artillery fire and traps blocking its path.

This time, facing a well-prepared human guard team, they gained no advantage whatsoever.

It tried several times to break through the dense artillery fire that impacted the wall, but failed each time.

In the end, he could only retreat to the top of a distant mountain with his body covered in burns, his cold, emerald eyes gazing unwillingly at the human city.

The enormous mutated python lay horizontally on the mountaintop, its dark red scales adding a dark red border to the mountain, its entire body, stretching over a thousand meters, visible to humans.

Inside the outer city's central security zone, guards announced that the crisis was temporarily over.

But as people gazed at that long, dark red line on the distant mountains, a chill still ran through them.

There's an old saying: "It's not the thief you should fear, but the one who has his eye on you."

The residents of the city felt this way at that moment, as if they were being used as a food reserve by a giant mutated python.

The guards drove the crowd away, telling them to disperse and go home.

"Brother Gangzi, let's go to my house," Meng Da said.

Zhao Gang nodded. Even if he went back to the hotel now, he wouldn't be able to sleep because the cub in his arms was incredibly excited.

The group got up and left the safe zone, then followed the main group back to the low-rent area.

Unexpectedly, the houses in the low-rent area were shaken and developed huge cracks, including the unfortunate house of the Meng family.

It was hoped that some of the guards who remained in the city would rush over and organize everyone to build a temporary camp first, and then move in after the houses were repaired.

Fortunately, the Meng brothers brought all their important belongings with them when they came out, including their tent.

By the time the tent was set up, it was already past four in the morning, the darkest hour before dawn.

Grandma Meng was an elderly woman, so she lay down on the moisture-proof mat and fell asleep.

The Meng brothers, Da and Meng, sat by the fire in front of the tent, yawning repeatedly in their sleep.

Zhao Gang and Zhao Xiaoxiu sat opposite the two brothers. The father and daughter exchanged a secret glance. Zhao Xiaoxiu read her father's thoughts and stared wide-eyed in disbelief.

She pointed subtly to the "red line" outside the city with her small hand, then made a peace sign. There were only two hours left until dawn. Was that enough?

Zhao Gang nodded slightly, unconsciously licking the corner of his lips. Two hours was enough for him to have breakfast.

Zhao Xiaoxiu: Then let's go.
