Zhao Xiaoxiu took off her raincoat, hung it on the doorknob, came back, climbed to the foot of the bed, and, in a tone of a little adult, instructed Chen Que:
"Dad said that patients need to eat nutritious food so that their injuries can heal faster, so these are all for Grandma Yin to nourish her body. Sister Chen Que, please remember to make them for Grandma Yin."
"Oh, blackback fish soup! It must be soup; the fish soup is incredibly delicious and sweet. Make sure Grandma drinks plenty..."
Her little mouth was making soft, rosy, and moist sounds. It looked so bouncy that if Chen Que wasn't afraid of scaring the child, she wouldn't be able to resist picking her up and giving her a kiss.
The planting area was quiet, especially Territory 13. Not only was it quiet, but it also had a sense of security that felt like it was isolated from the world, as if there were no more ferocious mutants in the world.
Hearing the child's innocent voice and seeing the child's pure face, the heavy weight on Grandma Yin's heart suddenly lifted, and she slowly closed her eyes and fell into a deep sleep.
When she woke up again, the sky outside the window was completely dark, and the room was lit by a soft, warm orange light that was not glaring.
Grandma Yin looked down and saw that her clothes had been changed into dry and soft ones, and the wounds on her legs and abdomen had been treated. Large patches of medical fungi covered the wounds, emitting a reassuringly cool touch.
"Grandma Silver".
The child's voice was soft, right next to my ear.
Grandma Yin turned her head to look and saw Zhao Xiaoxiu with her hands folded together, her little face resting on the back of her hands, looking at her with wide eyes and concern.
"Are you feeling any better?" the little guy asked cautiously.
Grandma Yin nodded gently. This sleep in the evening was the most restful she had slept in ten years. Her nerves, which had been tense from days of continuous fighting, finally got a moment of relaxation.
She raised her hand to touch the child's head, but to her surprise, her mind and body were relaxed, and she couldn't muster the strength, so she had to give up with regret.
"Where are the others?" Granny Yin asked, her voice hoarse.
Zhao Xiaoxiu said, "Everyone is having dinner at my house. Grandma Yin, let me pour you some water."
As she spoke, she turned around, slid off the chair, ran to the small table in the outer living room, unscrewed the lid of the thermos, poured a bowl of filtered hot water, and brought it back to the bedside.
Grandma Yin was about to sit up when the little guy suddenly cried out in annoyance, "I'll go get you a straw!"
Before he finished speaking, he put the bowl on the chair, turned around and ran out the door again. A moment later he came back with a long glass straw, followed by a tall, dark shadow.
"Squeak!" Two animal cries startled Granny Yin, who was lying on the bed, causing all her muscles to tense up instantly.
A variant?
As soon as a dark figure ran in behind Zhao Xiaoxiu, Granny Yin's aura changed.
A dark figure stepped into the house, and when the light came on, it revealed a body of golden-brown fur and a monkey face that looked around curiously.
"Grandma Silver, this is Sister Monkey, my friend." Zhao Xiaoxiu reached out to stop Sister Monkey from entering the inner room, then ran in herself, put the straw in the bowl, and brought it to Grandma Silver's lips.
"Grandma Yin, are you hungry? Sister Chen Que is cooking for you and will be here in a little while." The little guy didn't forget to comfort her.
Grandma Yin slowly removed her left hand from the gun, which she had been hiding under the quilt. Her shrewd eyes were fixed on the macaque at the door. She had a straw in her mouth and swallowed several mouthfuls, finally moistening her parched throat.
"Captain!" Shen Que came over with a lunchbox, put away her umbrella at the door, nodded politely to the evolved macaque blocking the doorway, and quickly slipped in while holding her breath.
Only after getting away from that evolved macaque did I dare to breathe normally.
Zhao Xiaoxiu expressed her helplessness but also her understanding, after all, these were people who had just fought a life-or-death battle with the mutant species, and it was impossible for them to let their guard down when it came to animals.
Chen Que smiled at Zhao Xiaoxiu, helped Grandma Yin up from the bed with one hand, and fed her.
Yes, eating. Not drinking nutritional fluids!
The stew, with its meat, vegetables, and seasonings, released a wonderful aroma of fresh ingredients as soon as the lid was lifted, instantly brightening Grandma Yin's eyes.
Zhao Xiaoxiu obediently moved aside from the bedside and stood by the door, her back lazily resting against Monkey Sister's bulging belly. The two, a monkey and a baby, watched others eat with great interest.
Grandma Yin didn't remember there was a child in the room until she finished her food. She laughed awkwardly and quickly asked with concern, "Little girl, have you eaten?"
Zhao Xiaoxiu nodded; she was the first to finish eating.
"Grandma Yin, you get some rest. I'm going home now," Zhao Xiaoxiu said.
She could tell that Granny Yin wanted to say something to Shen Que, but hesitated because she was still there.
I guess I need to ask those monkeys, fish, and flowers on Territory 13.
Zhao Xiaoxiu waved her little hand, jumped onto Monkey Sister's shoulder, and left on her own, leaving the space for the guests.
Chen Que reminded him, "Use an umbrella."
"Mmm," Zhao Xiaoxiu responded. Monkey Sister had already quickly opened the umbrella that was drying at the door and carried the cub home.
As soon as Zhao Xiaoxiu left, Granny Yin immediately pulled Chen Que aside and asked her what was going on here, and why people were still staying with animals.
And where did such delicious and fresh ingredients come from? Are they very expensive? Did they cost the lord too much money?
She had only been in Territory No. 13 for half a day, but Shen Que's understanding had been shattered one after another. She was still processing what had happened and couldn't explain it very clearly.
Fortunately, Granny Meng returned shortly afterward. Seeing Granny Yin's anxious expression, she explained with a laugh:
"Everyone has secrets, and I can't go into the details, but once you're in our Territory No. 13, it's not surprising to see even the strangest things."
Grandma Meng reassured them, "Besides, it's very safe here, and you won't be disturbed at all. Just stay here and take good care of your injuries."
"As for food, Gangzi is generous, so you don't need to be polite with him. If you want meat, just say so. We raise fish at home, and if you want vegetables, it's even simpler. Just pick any of the mutated cabbages in the yard."
Chen Que waved her hand: "No, no, I wouldn't dare eat like this even if it were free. Cousin, do you know how many points it costs to make such a simple dish at Jiangcheng Restaurant?"
Grandma Meng shook her head. She really didn't know, but she could guess that it definitely wouldn't be cheap.
"Let's not talk about that. The key issue right now is the commander's injury."
Granny Meng gestured to Granny Yin not to worry, and to just focus on recovering. She then called Chen Que out and asked about her mother's condition.
“My mom is doing well. Now that things have stabilized in Jiangcheng, she’s going back to work at the recycling station.”
"That's good." Granny Meng nodded and led Chen Que to another room to prepare where she would sleep for the next few days.
"The rainy season is almost over. Bring your mom over for a visit then. She can eat, drink, and stay here with me. You can also take a few days off and enjoy rural life."
Granny Meng talked on and on, and Chen Que found it all quite novel.
In just over six months since she arrived in the planting area, her cousin has completely changed.
He grew bolder, talked more, and quietly became a secondary evolver.
Don't people always say that the lords of the planting areas are living a very frugal life, spending their days either doing voluntary labor or clearing land?
How come it's completely different from what she saw?
