Chapter 251 The Fruit Thief

Zhao Xiaoxiu couldn't wait to put them on. They pinched her toes a little, but it was much better than going barefoot.

“Look, Sister Monkey.” Zhao Xiaoxiu lifted her foot and wiggled it.

Monkey Sister's eyes sparkled: The baby is so amazing!

Zhao Xiaoxiu proudly raised her chin, waved her hand, and said, "Let's go see if there's anything else good."

Unfortunately, the factory area had been ransacked time and again by survivors who went hunting in the mountains. Zhao Xiaoxiu couldn't even find a piece of iron, and even the window frames and intact glass on the windows had been taken away.

However, this abandoned factory is not bad as a temporary camp.

Just as Zhao Xiaoxiu was thinking this, a strange noise suddenly came from the pile of waste behind her. Monkey Sister, who was hanging upside down from the roof beam, immediately jumped down and nervously protected Zhao Xiaoxiu.

Zhao Xiaoxiu was also startled. She suddenly drew her pistol and looked back. The green vines covering the waste pile were trembling.

Suddenly, a dark hand emerged from under the pile of rubble. It seemed slow, but in less than three seconds, a humanoid creature covered in black roared and jumped down towards Zhao Xiaoxiu.

They are White Walkers.

Zhao Xiaoxiu breathed a sigh of relief; as long as it wasn't a human, that was fine.

The monkey sister pounced fiercely, and together with the White Walker, they fell heavily to the ground from mid-air with a "thud".

However, with the White Walker below and the monkey above, the strong, thick arms pressed down firmly on the White Walker's upper body. The monkey lowered its head, revealing a set of sharp fangs, and tore off the White Walker's fragile neck and head in one bite. It then tossed the monkey's head aside.

The head and body separated, but the White Walker was still alive. However, after its body trembled for a while, it became completely still, leaving only a disgusting, rotting head with its upper and lower jaws clicking and clenching.

Zhao Xiaoxiu took two or three steps forward, picked up the scrap material on the ground and smashed it down hard. Instantly, slurry spurted out, and it was completely dead.

It seems this place isn't very comfortable to live in either. Zhao Xiaoxiu clapped her hands, shrugged, called Sister Monkey, and left the factory area.

The sun was about to set, and Zhao Xiaoxiu had only picked some fruit. The mutated animals must have smelled her scent, because they didn't even pass by her. She couldn't find any prey to hunt.

Zhao Xiaoxiu used to think this ability was amazing, but now... rubbing her flat belly, she felt like she had no fat left and just wanted a mutated animal to fall from the sky so she could eat meat like crazy.

Because she had to take care of her, Sister Monkey stayed by her side almost every step of the way and would never leave to hunt alone.

Fortunately, it wasn't a picky eater and thought the wild fruit was quite good.

A monkey and a child picked half a pocketful of edible mutated fruit and rushed back to camp before sunset.

No one came here today; there was no sign of strangers around the camp.

However, on the way back to the camp, Zhao Xiaoxiu heard voices, which meant that people often came to the vicinity of the mining area.

She could only pray that the survivors wouldn't come here before Xiwa returned.

Zhao Xiaoxiu scooped out the unfiltered lake water into a frying pan and boiled it on a small gas stove.

After they cooled down, I ate a bite of wild fruit and drank some water. After eating more than a dozen wild fruits, I finally felt full.

Peter Pan guarded the lake by himself, searching for food at the bottom. It was all rotten fish and shrimp, nothing like the low-grade mutated animal meat his former master used to feed him.

The year-long peaceful life within its territory made it forget that it had once grown up in heavily polluted river water, eating rotten fish and shrimp.

It is easy to go from frugality to extravagance, but difficult to go from extravagance to frugality.

After dinner, both the master and servant were a little listless. Zhao Xiaoxiu even missed the greasy nutrient solution that tasted terrible.

Only Sister Monkey was happily dancing around the lake.

Both master and servant were very curious about why it was so happy. Sister Monkey said excitedly: "There are two big moons tonight."

Zhao Xiaoxiu was startled. She looked up and saw a bright moon hanging in the sky. Looking down, she saw another large moon reflected in the lake water—there really were two moons.

It was just the beginning of late August, and the nighttime temperature was a bit lower than the daytime temperature, but it was still okay, around 14 or 15 degrees Celsius. Wrapped in her sleeping bag, Zhao Xiaoxiu gradually fell asleep.

Only when I'm asleep do I feel that time flies by; the moment I close my eyes and open them again, it's the next day.

When I woke up in the early morning, the lakeside was quiet and peaceful, with white mist floating on the surface, making it look very ethereal.

Zhao Xiaoxiu stretched and loosened her limbs before starting another day of searching for food with Sister Monkey.

Zhao Xiaoxiu planned to have Sister Monkey take her to the valley where the two of them had met before. The valley was full of mature mutated fruit trees, and there should be a good harvest.

She planned to pick enough for three days, then stay by the lake waiting for Xiwa to return, and wouldn't go out again.

Zhao Xiaoxiu has excellent hearing. She can always hear voices nearby. Although they are not members of the search team, encountering other strangers is a huge threat to her.

She's not ready to kill anyone yet, so it's best to keep her away from people.

Guided by Zhao Xiaoxiu, Sister Monkey avoided three small hunting teams and, after an hour, successfully found the valley and saw the entire valley full of ripe fruit trees.

At this time of year, most of the fruits in the mountains are ripe, and all sorts of colors hang on the treetops, creating a dreamlike scene like a small forest in a fairy tale.

However, beneath this dreamlike veil lies a deep danger.

There are several flocks of mutated birds in the orchard, who guard these fruit trees. They will not attack mutated birds that are just passing by.

But if other mutant species or humans try to harm the fruit trees, they will immediately swarm and attack, trying to kill you.

When Zhao Xiaoxiu was alone, she picked and ate a lot of fruit, but the mutated birds were indifferent to her actions.

So Zhao Xiaoxiu left Sister Monkey outside the valley and secretly slipped in to carry the fruit out, trip after trip.

Strangely enough, the group of mutated birds watched her steal her home without attacking her.

However, when Zhao Xiaoxiu picked twice as many fruits on her last trip as she had on the previous trips, the leader of the flock of birds suddenly spread its wings and flew up, circling and chirping loudly above her head as a warning.

"Hehe~" Zhao Xiaoxiu gave it an innocent, silly smile, turned around, grabbed a bag full of fruit, and ran away!

The old bird was furious. It swooped down with a sharp cry. It had never seen such a shameless human child. She had already been allowed to take so much fruit, and she still wanted to take more. How despicable!

A sharp wind blew past Zhao Xiaoxiu's head. She gasped and darted into the mutated thorn bushes, directing the plants to make way. Her legs moved swiftly, and she soon reached the edge of the valley.

The eldest bird was furious. The thicket of thorns blocked its way, and it tried several times to reach out its claws but failed to catch the greedy chick. Instead, it pricked its feet with the thorns.

Soon, the sound of birds flapping their wings filled the valley. The mutated birds in the forest, summoned by their leader, launched a fierce attack on the greedy fruit thief.

Seeing that things were going badly, Sister Monkey roared anxiously.

"Sister Monkey!"

Zhao Xiaoxiu emerged from the thicket of thorns, and Monkey Sister immediately stepped forward, picked her up, held the cub in one hand, and climbed onto the vines in front of her with the other, swinging back and forth, quickly escaping the scene.
