Chapter 35 Youyou

On their way to Taoyuan Base, Zhao Gang and Zhao Xiaoxiu encountered Yang Mei, who was in charge of the final self-destruction mission of Hope Base.

They were the last evacuation team, picking up people along the way as they left.

Zhao Gang and Zhao Xiaoxiu were also picked up and put into the car.

They also gave special consideration to Zhao Xiaoxiu, allowing her to ride in the RV.

Zhao Gang, however, did not receive this treatment. He was assigned to an armored vehicle at the front, where he was squeezed in with a bunch of rough men.

Zhao Gang strongly resisted being separated from his daughter.

But when he turned around and saw that the RV was full of smelly men, he still loosened the straps on his body and carried his daughter to the RV himself.

Zhao Xiaoxiu patted her chest and assured him that she would take good care of herself, and only then did Zhao Gang get into the armored vehicle in front of him, looking back every few steps.

As for the bicycle, Yang Mei, who looked meticulous, ordered the soldiers to help them carry it to the roof.

The evacuation convoy rested for half an hour while waiting for the engineering vehicles ahead to repair the damaged road before setting off again.

When a bridge collapses, they use suspension plates to build another bridge; when a road is damaged, they lower an excavator to directly probe the pit.

They dig through mountains when they encounter mountains, and build bridges over rivers, always traveling in a straight line.

When thirsty, drink the clean, filtered water that seeps from the leaves of the mutated Alocasia macrorrhiza in the water tank.

When they get hungry, they eat fruits picked in a temperature-controlled room and specially prepared nutrient solution, which tastes like chicken!

Zhao Xiaoxiu inhaled sharply and fiercely, leaving the little boy lying on the dining table stunned.

But after a short while, he carefully pushed the half-eaten apple in front of him towards her.

Zhao Xiaoxiu glanced at him. "Is it for me?"

The little boy, who looked two years older than her, seemed a bit afraid of her. He forced a smile and nodded, "Mm."

"Thank you!" Zhao Xiaoxiu smiled gratefully at him, picked up the apple, opened her mouth wide, and took a big bite.

The apple flesh was fragrant and sweet, and Zhao Xiaoxiu's eyes lit up with delight.

He opened his mouth and took two more bites, swallowing half an apple before leaning back contentedly on the soft booth sofa, savoring the moment.

The little boy sitting opposite her looked at her with admiration, thinking to himself: She can eat so much.

Mustering my courage, I asked curiously, "What's your name?"

Before she could answer, he said, "My name is Yang Hengjie, my nickname is Youyou, and I'm five and a half years old. What about you?"

Zhao Xiaoxiu braced herself against the cushion and sat up straight from the booth. The dining table was a bit high and blocked her way.

So he changed to kneeling on the booth, supporting himself on the tabletop, and looked at Youyou, who was full of curiosity about him, and said:

“My name is Zhao Xiaoxiu, I am three years and five months old. I don’t have a nickname, my dad calls me Xiaoxiu.”

Youyou chuckled happily, instantly losing her fear, and said with a touch of smugness:

"I'm the older brother, I'm older than you, you have to listen to me."

Zhao Xiaoxiu objected, "Why should I?"

Youyou immediately pointed to the control room at the back of the restaurant, "Because this is my mom's car! So you have to listen to me."

Yang Mei looked through the glass window between the restaurant and the control room and saw the two children chatting enthusiastically in the restaurant. She smiled slightly at Zhao Xiaoxiu.

He then instructed his son, "Yang Hengjie, don't bully the new kids."

He lowered his head, continued to turn on the light screen, directed the entire convoy's movement, and arranged for his assistants to monitor the research materials in each carriage in real time and report back immediately.

In the restaurant, Youyou noticed her mother looking over, and immediately puffed out her chest and proudly raised her chin at Zhao Xiaoxiu.

The next second, she heard her mother's warning, and her little shoulders slumped, and she wilted.

Looking up at Zhao Xiaoxiu, I thought she would take the opportunity to mock me back, but to my surprise, she didn't.

He became enthusiastic again, acting like a little host and learning the ways of adults to treat guests, asking with concern, "Would you like some water?"

Zhao Xiaoxiu nodded, and he immediately jumped off the booth, grabbed a disposable paper cup, ran to the bar, filled a cup with water from the water dispenser, carefully carried it back, and placed it on the table on tiptoe.

Seeing that Zhao Xiaoxiu was kneeling on the booth far from the dining table, she ran over and grabbed a long straw, which she then inserted into her water glass.

"You know how to use a straw, right?" he asked earnestly, blinking his long-lashed, big eyes.

Zhao Xiaoxiu nodded, pulled the straw closer to herself, and took a sip of water.

"It's so sweet!" she said, a little surprised.

It tastes completely different from the filtered water released from unfinished buildings.

Youyou waved to her, signaling her to come with him.

The large RV is fully equipped, just like a luxurious presidential suite.

From a child's perspective, the corridor is very long, long enough for them to run wild.

Zhao Xiaoxiu followed Youyou at a jog, passing through the dining room and bedroom, and arrived at a transparent wall.

Inside the wall is a small, square space, with long-leaved green plants hanging on the walls.

Tiny water droplets are constantly emerging from the plant leaves, dripping down from the tips of the leaves and collecting in the pool below.

A small water pump is operating, delivering water from the pool to the drinking water area inside the RV.

"What is this?" Zhao Xiaoxiu asked curiously.

Youyou explained, "These are top-grade mutated Dieffenbachia, which can filter out clean water that we humans can drink directly."

"My mother discovered and cultivated them all!"

He was particularly proud, saying, "My mother is a very accomplished biology PhD. What about your mother?"

Zhao Xiaoxiu said calmly, "My mother has passed away. She used to be an excellent hunter in the hunting team."

"That's pretty impressive too." Feeling a little embarrassed that she had asked the wrong question, Youyou leaned close to Zhao Xiaoxiu's ear and whispered:

"Let me tell you a secret, I actually have eleven toes, but don't tell anyone else."

Zhao Xiaoxiu looked down at his feet. He was wearing sneakers, and if Youyou hadn't revealed it, you wouldn't have been able to tell at all.

"My mom said that once we get to the hospital at Taoyuan Base, they will perform surgery to remove my extra toes, and then I will be just like any other healthy child."

"And you?" Youyou stepped back, scrutinizing Zhao Xiaoxiu. "What's your secret?"

Zhao Xiaoxiu grinned mischievously, "I have no secrets, I'm perfectly healthy."

Youyou's expression froze for a moment, then she said in disbelief, "You're lying, that's impossible. The kids in the base all have secrets."

Believe it or not, it's up to you.

Zhao Xiaoxiu walked towards the restaurant, took off her shoes, climbed onto the booth sofa, and lay down.

She needs to sleep and rest.

It is very likely that this is the first and last time in her life that she can sleep on such a comfortable and clean sofa.

Youyou followed angrily, first staring at Zhao Xiaoxiu's feet, then at her fingers, trying to guess that she had an extra toe or finger.

Finding that her hands and feet were normal, and suspecting that she might be sick in the brain, he deliberately took out his tablet, opened the children's educational games on it, and sat down next to Zhao Xiaoxiu to play.

Zhao Xiaoxiu was sleepy, but seeing how persistent he was, she sat up, grabbed the tablet, and continued playing the puzzle game he was playing. She completed all the levels and easily surpassed her previous record.

Taking a quick glance at the little boy beside her who was about to cry, she couldn't bear to stop.

She had absolutely no intention of using the tablet, really!
