Chapter 37 Living in the Cowshed

Without rules, nothing can be accomplished. Even if the methods are ruthless, as long as they are effective, they are good rules.

With discipline in place, the gathering area under the east wall finally calmed down.

The cowshed that Zhao Gang and his daughter rented did not have any cattle.

Mutant cattle are wild and difficult to tame; unless you are a professional animal trainer, ordinary people would never dare to raise them.

Therefore, it would be more appropriate to call the cowshed rented by the father and daughter a storage room.

The cowshed, which is about 20 square meters in size, is divided into two rooms, an inner and an outer one.

The inner room was used to store hay and firewood, while the outer room was used to raise free-range chickens.

Flying Chicken is a new species that mutated from ordinary fighting chickens. It has a mutation level of B and is highly aggressive.

These chickens don't lay eggs; farmers raise them simply to protect the crops in their fields.

Because flying chickens eat insects, they eat all kinds of insects.

When handing the cowshed key to Zhao Gang, the landlord specifically instructed:

“I have more than a dozen free-range chickens in my shed. Remember to open the door for them every morning and they will go out to forage by themselves. Remember to open the door at noon so that they can come back to rest. Then let them out again in the afternoon and they will come back before sunset.”

"Remember, you must let the chickens out when they're foraging for food, or they might attack your kids and you won't be able to blame me for not warning you."

Zhao Gang: "Understood."

Despite saying that, when he opened the cowshed door, he saw a dozen or so pheasants squatting inside, eyeing his young with predatory intent.

Tentacles immediately extended from his body, giving the dozen or so flying chickens a good beating.

In an instant, those unruly gazes all became incredibly docile when they fell upon Zhao Xiaoxiu.

Even when they saw Zhao Xiaoxiu running over and taking away the feathers they had used to build their nest, the sharp-beaked creature would pick up down feathers it had plucked from under its wings and spit them onto Zhao Xiaoxiu's bed.

A dozen or so flying chickens, each the size of a swan, huddled together in a corner, trying their best to minimize their presence.

After making up her bed for the next three days, Zhao Xiaoxiu opened the door, waved, and smiled amicably: "Little chicks, go out and run wild!"

The chickens fluttered out of the cowshed one by one, more enthusiastic than ever before, and worked hard to find insects to eat in the field.

I just wish I could keep working until dark.

Just to reduce the time spent in the cowshed.

Zhao Xiaoxiu sat on a wooden stake by the cowshed door, resting her chin on her hand as she looked at the vast expanse of fertile farmland that had been reclaimed, and thought of the evolved fruit and vegetable seeds she had obtained at the temple.

I wish they had a piece of land of their own.

A figure appeared on the path.

Wearing simple combat uniforms and carrying weapons, they didn't seem like people from the Peach Blossom Base.

"Brother Gangzi! It really is you guys!"

A familiar voice came from inside.

Zhao Xiaoxiu, who had been sitting blankly, suddenly looked up, saw the person who had come, and stood up in surprise, "Second Uncle Meng!"

Zhao Gang was washing the dirty clothes that the father and daughter had changed out of in the ditch behind the cowshed, and also clearing out the dangerous mutated creatures in the ditch.

Hearing the sound, he stood up and turned around.

"Brother Gangzi!" Meng Lao Er happily picked up Zhao Xiaoxiu and spun her around, then carried her to the riverbank.

"I knew you two would be alright," Meng Lao Er said happily.

Zhao Gang didn't show any joy on his face, but seeing how happy his cub looked, he nodded.

"Second Uncle, where are Uncle Meng and Granny Meng?" Zhao Xiaoxiu asked.

Meng Lao Er pointed to the gathering place to the east, "It's over there. We just came back from a cleanup mission with the hunting team. Mom and my older brother are resting."

“I saw the core team of the biotech company arrive, and guessed that you must be here, so I went to ask around for information about you, and that’s how I ended up here.”

Meng Lao Er looked at the cowshed in front of him and the ditch where Zhao Gang washed clothes, and said with delight:

"This place is nice, much better than where we pitched our tents."

That said, they got the tent from Yungusi Temple. If it weren't for the tent, the family of three wouldn't know where to sleep.

However, Chen Que and her daughter took good care of them. As soon as they arrived, they took them on missions with the hunting team so they could exchange supplies with the Peach Blossom Base, and they didn't have to worry about food and drink for the time being.

Seeing that his little one was chatting well, Zhao Gang squatted down and continued washing clothes.

The father and daughter didn't have many clothes; each had two sets of summer clothes and an extra jacket.

The temperature dropped significantly in October, so we need to find a thick winter coat for the cubs.

Meng Lao Er had become accustomed to Zhao Gang's silence.

Carrying Zhao Xiaoxiu back to the entrance of the cowshed, the two people, twenty-three years apart in age, sat side by side on the wooden stakes, exchanging information and making plans for the days to come.

Zhao Xiaoxiu asked, "Second Uncle Meng, how did the talks between the higher-ups go?"

Meng Lao Er said, "It should be soon. I heard they're discussing whether to merge or divide the area, mainly depending on what Taoyuan Base decides to do."

Hope Base was initially in a very passive position, but now that the last evacuating force has moved the core of Hope Base here, Hope Base has suddenly gained confidence.

Putting aside everything else, just the floating plant alone is enough to make Taoyuan Base envious.

Not to mention the strength of the biotechnology company they hope to establish at the base, which ranks second among the five major bases.

The first is the Arknights Island Headquarters.

Another point is that people from biotech companies carry weight in their words.

"I heard you came by car with Director Yang? She's a high-ranking executive at the biotech company and has a lot of influence, so we're definitely safe from staying."

Meng Lao Er told Zhao Xiao Xiu that above the five major bases in Zone C, there is also the Biological Alliance.

All five bases have to act according to the Alliance's wishes.

After all, in today's environment, those who master biotechnology are the true kings.

"I heard from Shen Que and the others that the merger is a done deal," Meng Lao Er said confidently.

Looking up at the high wall in the distance, I would definitely feel very safe living inside.

"Hey, hey!" Meng Lao Er asked with a grin, "Xiao Xiu, you've never seen a real city before, have you?"

Zhao Xiaoxiu nodded.

Meng Lao Er pointed to the high wall, "Inside there, there is water, electricity, and internet. It's so much better than our unfinished building."

Zhao Xiaoxiu looked in the direction he pointed. She did have a longing for it, but she was more curious about why the hunting team was doing a cleanup mission.

"Oh, this?" Meng Lao Er scratched his head. "Maybe they're afraid that too many people will cause trouble?"

"The Taoyuan Base has issued a cleanup mission to clear out mutated plants and animals of grade B or above in the nearby mountains and forests."

Speaking of which, look at this vast expanse of fertile farmland in front of you.

Meng Lao Er raised an eyebrow. "They like farming here, maybe they're preparing for land reclamation?"

Zhao Xiaoxiu suddenly had a bold idea, "Second Uncle Meng, do you think Taoyuan Base might be planning to send us all to reclaim wasteland?"

Meng Lao Er had never thought about this before, but now that Zhao Xiaoxiu had mentioned it, his heart skipped a beat.

"No way?"

Once we leave the base's high walls, it's so dangerous outside.

Sleeping at night in a place without walls, my home becomes the home of mutated plants and animals, free to come and go. Wouldn't that lead to someone's death?

Zhao Xiaoxiu forced a smile; she vaguely felt that she had guessed correctly.
