Zhao Xiaoxiu was a little surprised and wary of Yang Mei and her son's arrival.
Yang Mei works for the biotechnology company. Nominally, she belongs to the Hope Base, but in reality, the biotechnology company has always been above the five major bases and has absolute say.
If someone like that suddenly appears, no one would believe she just happened to come for a stroll.
Yang Mei was clearly aware that her sudden visit would make people nervous, but she had already prepared an excuse.
"The base attaches great importance to the lords of the planting area. When they heard that something had happened here, they specially sent us here to investigate."
As Yang Mei spoke, she looked down at Youyou, whom she was holding hands with, "Youyou also wanted to play with Xiaoxiu, so I brought him here on my way. I hope I didn't bother you."
"Zhao Xiaoxiu, I brought you some delicious food." Youyou looked expectantly at Zhao Xiaoxiu in the territory and asked, "Is this whole territory yours?"
Zhao Xiaoxiu nodded. Although she didn't like Yang Mei's arrival, she couldn't help but smile when she saw Youyou.
She tugged at Zhao Gang's pants, and Zhao Gang sighed helplessly, nodding slightly to the mother and son outside, indicating that they could enter the territory.
Yang Mei didn't come in, but let go of her son's hand and told him, "Then you play with Xiaoxiu here first, and I'll come to pick you up later when I'm done with my work."
Youyou was more than happy to agree, and immediately slung her little schoolbag over her shoulder and ran towards Zhao Xiaoxiu.
"Hello, Uncle Zhao!" Youyou greeted Zhao Gang first, then turned to Zhao Xiaoxiu and grinned.
Zhao Xiaoxiu waved, picked up her little hoe, and gestured for Youyou to follow her. The two little ones chatted and laughed as they walked toward the house.
Yang Mei's gaze remained fixed on the two of them, or more precisely, on Zhao Xiaoxiu.
Looking at Zhao Xiaoxiu, who was no different from any other little girl and was happy to see her friends, she felt a surge of excitement inexplicably, and her fingers hanging at her sides trembled slightly uncontrollably.
Yang Mei took a deep breath, curled her fingers into a fist to suppress the trembling in her heart, pretended to be fine, gave Zhao Gang a thank-you smile, turned around and got into the car and left.
The truck drove toward the patrol station, and Zhao Gang watched it all the way, but his eyes were unfocused.
He replayed Yang Mei's every move in his mind over and over again, and his powerful perception told him that this woman named Yang Mei seemed to have misunderstood something.
But it doesn't matter. Protecting information is already ingrained in our DNA. Even if the identity of the person is mistaken, anyone who sees it will be devout to 'God'.
Zhao Gang was certain that Yang Mei, the discoverer, would not reveal any information about herself or the cub.
Not only would she not expose it, but given her fervent attitude towards science, she would not allow anyone to discover the existence of 'God' or know Him better than she did before she had thoroughly studied this new discovery.
Zhao Gang went home feeling relieved.
Remembering Zhao Xiaoxiu's earlier instructions, Youyou left the two guards responsible for taking care of him outside the territory.
The two looked at the simple self-built building with lights on not far away, filled with confusion.
They couldn't understand where the director got the trust to leave his own son alone in someone else's home.
If they knew each other, it wouldn't be a problem, but this father and daughter seemed strange no matter how you looked at them, and they didn't seem like the type to take care of a child.
The two were worried, but they could only stand outside the territory, keeping a close eye on the situation inside the self-built building in case anything unexpected happened.
The laughter of children could be heard from time to time.
The two guards looked at each other, wondering what was so great about building a house in a wasteland.
Youyou followed Zhao Xiaoxiu and explored the entire building, both upstairs and downstairs. The self-built house, which he had never seen before, brought him a sense of exploration and wonder. Everything he saw was new and exciting.
Zhao Xiaoxiu pointed to the bedroom and said that this was all her own territory, and Youyou immediately looked at her with envy.
Zhao Xiaoxiu took him to the kitchen to experience the faucet, and Youyou cooperated by making "wah wah" sounds.
“Zhao Xiaoxiu, your house is so big and fun! It’s much bigger than my mom’s house. My mom’s house doesn’t even have taps that you can turn on; they’re all sensor-operated.”
Youyou said with great anticipation, "I wish my mom's house had a tap that can be turned on."
Zhao Xiaoxiu couldn't tell for a moment whether the kid was showing off or was genuinely naive.
"That's right!"
The two went from the kitchen to the tool shed, and Youyou suddenly tugged at Zhao Xiaoxiu's hand.
"What are you doing?" Zhao Xiaoxiu was about to show him the small dining table her father had made for her.
Youyou gave her a mysterious smile, revealing a row of small white teeth, and ran to the living room sofa to pick up her schoolbag.
Seeing how hard he was struggling, Zhao Xiaoxiu reached out and took the schoolbag to help carry it to the small dining table, thinking expectantly, "It's so heavy, could it contain something good?"
"I brought you lots of delicious food." Youyou unzipped his backpack and took out all the snacks he had specially selected.
There was watermelon bubble gum, small bread rolls, low-grade mutated fruit, dried fruit, and a bunch of loose sandwich cookies, which filled the small dining table.
Zhao Xiaoxiu asked in surprise, "Give them all to me?"
"Yes!" Youyou nodded emphatically and waved her hand generously, "It's all for you!"
Then he asked Zhao Xiaoxiu what she wanted to eat.
Zhao Xiaoxiu pointed to the cookies, and Youyou immediately picked out a pack, tore open the packaging, handed her a cookie, and ate one himself.
“Good friends should share,” he said.
While eating, Zhao Xiaoxiu tentatively asked, "Does your mother know?"
Youyou immediately made a shushing gesture and whispered to Zhao Xiaoxiu, "These are all things I secretly saved up. I've been saving them for a long time. Mom doesn't like me hiding snacks, so you mustn't reveal our secret, or I won't bring you any more good food next time."
As he spoke, he even glanced at Zhao Xiaoxiu sideways, as if to say that she was a traitor for speaking out.
Zhao Xiaoxiu ate another small bread roll and silently patted her chest to show that she would never betray her companion.
Youyou was instantly relieved. She opened the jar of dried fruit and sat down with Zhao Xiaoxiu at the small dining table that she hadn't finished making yet. They each had a piece of fruit and swung their legs happily.
Zhao Xiaoxiu was worried that Youyou would ask for water after eating too many snacks, since her family didn't have filtered water and ordinary people couldn't drink it.
As it turned out, he was already prepared. He took out his water bottle from his bag, gulped down two big mouthfuls, poured a capful of water and handed it to her, asking, "Zhao Xiaoxiu, are you thirsty?"
Zhao Xiaoxiu: "Thirsty!"
This is top-quality filtered water, with a sweet taste; it's a rare find that you can't buy anywhere else.
Zhao Xiaoxiu didn't stand on ceremony at all. She picked up the water glass and sipped it slowly, unwilling to drink it all at once.
Youyou fed herself with the snacks she had saved and then curiously looked around and touched everything in the tool shed.
Seeing the neatly arranged wooden toys on Zhao Gang's long work desk—including airplanes, cars, and a fish—she excitedly turned to Zhao Xiaoxiu and asked, "Did your dad make all these toys for you?"
Zhao Xiaoxiu nodded as if it were a common occurrence, her gaze still fixed on the snacks.
Youyou sighed, "Your dad is so good to you, unlike my dad."
Zhao Xiaoxiu looked up from the pile of snacks. The dog blinked its eyes and asked in confusion, "Is your dad still alive?"
Youyou:? ? ?
