Chapter 84 Digging a Trench

Because they had been delayed on the way back to find Zhao Gang's clothes, the father and daughter returned to the camp at around 2 a.m.

The campsite was quiet when I left, but bustling with activity when I returned.

Soldiers ran around the camp, and vehicles came and went, heading to the command center and then urgently leaving it.

Just as Zhao Xiaoxiu and her father slipped past everyone and crawled into the tent, Mo Shigui strode in, whistling to wake everyone up.

"Everyone outside is so busy and you're still sleeping!" Mo Shigui started cursing as soon as he entered the door, kicking the mercenaries who were huddled in their sleeping bags out of bed one by one.

Someone complained helplessly, "Didn't you say, Captain, that we just need to follow orders? No one's calling us no matter how busy things are outside, which means it's none of our business..."

Mo Shigui glanced at him coldly, and the complaining stopped abruptly.

The group quickly got out of their sleeping bags, dressed, grabbed their weapons, and followed Mo Shigui as they jogged out of the camp and arrived at an open space.

By now, quite a few people had gathered in the open space.

Trucks and armored vehicles drove in, and the captains directed the soldiers to quickly board them.

"Captain, where are we going?" someone asked, puzzled.

Looking at the bustling camp and hearing the various announcements and broadcasts coming from the command center, everyone finally realized that something was wrong.

We agreed to proceed slowly and steadily in Jiangcheng, so why did we suddenly set off in the middle of the night?

"Captain, has something serious happened?" someone asked in a low voice.

After Mo Shigui finished his inspection and confirmed that all team members were on board, he waved to the drivers of both vehicles, jumped into the passenger seat of the armored vehicle, and took out a megaphone to give the order:

"Full speed ahead to Jiangcheng! All soldiers, grab your weapons! The trench digging mission is being moved up. We'll encounter a large number of White Walkers on our way to the mission location. Make sure to leave them all in the trenches we dig!"

After delivering the instructions he had just received, Mo Shigui put away the megaphone, immediately picked up his weapon, and went into alert mode.

Seeing this, the others didn't have time to ask any questions; they quickly raised their weapons as a precaution.

Zhao Gang gently placed Zhao Xiaoxiu, who was yawning sleepily, on his backpack, then stood up and joined everyone in maintaining vigilance.

He doesn't need any weapons; he can just swing his tentacles when necessary.

Trucks sped along the highway through the dense forest. As the first batch of soldiers in the trench warfare team, Zhao Xiaoxiu and others crashed into and killed countless White Walkers that suddenly rushed out.

Jiangcheng was once a metropolis with a population of tens of millions. Over the years, due to the existence of mutated umbrella mushrooms, all mutated creatures in the city have been trapped inside, becoming nutrients for the umbrella mushrooms.

However, the mutated mushroom's ability to devour is also limited; it simply cannot consume a horde of tens of millions of Otherworlders.

Now that the city is no longer under the control of the umbrella mushrooms, the White Walkers hidden deep underground have awakened.

After serving thirteen years in prison, he was released and went insane at the mere smell of a living person.

Moreover, their numbers are terrifying. If they were allowed to leave Jiangcheng and rush into the nearest Peach Blossom Base in droves, the consequences would be unimaginable.

An hour later, the entire trench warfare team arrived at the target location.

Armored vehicles lined up in a row, with high-temperature flamethrower racks providing cover, and soldiers on the trucks immediately picked up weapons and tools and began digging holes.

Thousands of small drones flew overhead, spraying virus inhibitors onto Jiangcheng to control the White Walkers' activity range and buy time for the trench warfare team.

Everyone was too busy to pay attention to Zhao Xiaoxiu, the little girl.

Zhao Gang was very confident in his abilities. He told the child to hold her axe, then turned around and started digging a trench with his teammates.

Only two of the main excavators have arrived so far; the others were attacked by mutated plants on the road, causing their suspension racks to tilt and fall over on the roadside.

But none of this was Zhao Gang and his group's concern. Their Group 528 was now divided into two groups, one responsible for digging holes and the other for covering their teammates.

Zhao Xiaoxiu took her axe, climbed up a tall stone block, and thought to herself, what's so special about covering up a hole?

"Hold!"

Suddenly, the mercenaries' curses rang out. Zhao Xiaoxiu looked over and saw a group of mutated ants, each the size of a soybean and shiny black, running out of the ground in terror.

But the human soldiers who faced them seemed even more terrified than they were.

"Get out of the way!" Aji, who was in charge of providing cover, shouted and picked up a small handheld flamethrower, spraying it wildly into the ditch.

Another cry of "Help!" rang out, and a brown root, as thick as a man's wrist, wrapped around a soldier's leg and dragged him to the ground.

Just as the person was about to sink into the sand, a blood streak arrived in time, forcefully pulling the person and the mutated root out of the soil.

Aji glanced at Zhao Gang, who was controlling the Blood Touch, with surprise, and quickly aimed the flames at the mutated root to rescue his teammate.

The charred roots curled up into a ball and twisted violently until they became a hard, charred lump of charred charcoal, at which point they finally calmed down.

Zhao Xiaoxiu exclaimed excitedly, "Wow!" and quickly slid down from the large stone block, pushing the football-sized lump of charcoal aside to examine it.

She stared at the charcoal ball for a while, and was pleasantly surprised to find a bit of green fluorescence shining through the gaps in the charcoal. She raised the axe and chopped it down hard!

With a "snap," the black charcoal ball was split in two, revealing a white core still steaming inside.

Zhao Xiaoxiu sniffed, "It smells so good!"

She reached out and picked off a bit of the white core. It was still very hot and a little burning to the touch. She quickly blew a few breaths of cool air onto it, and the aroma became even stronger. It smelled like the roots of a cooked, high-starch plant and was very sweet.

She rubbed her fingers together, and coarse glutinous rice powder fell off in a flurry. Zhao Xiaoxiu looked around to make sure no one was watching, then secretly put one in her mouth and took a bite.

It was soft and sweet, and my sleepy eyes suddenly opened wide.

So delicious!

Upon discovering the delicious treat, the cub quickly picked up both black charcoal balls, carried them to the truck, climbed up itself, sat in the truck bed, found the spoon that its father had put in the backpack, and scooped out the white core from the charcoal balls, feeding them to its mouth one bite at a time.

It's so delicious, Zhao Xiaoxiu almost cried.

Suddenly a large hand landed on her small shoulder. The little girl, who had been eating alone, looked up abruptly, her two round eyes wide open, like a startled fat mouse.

Mo Shigui quickly suppressed the corners of his mouth that were about to turn up, and asked in a serious tone, "What are you doing huddled here, little girl?"

Zhao Xiaoxiu breathed a sigh of relief and handed the remaining untouched half of the charcoal ball to Mo Shigui, saying, "Uncle Mo, this is delicious."

It was still dark, and the only lighting was the vehicle's headlights. The truck bed was backlit, so Mo Shigui hadn't been able to see what was inside.

Only now did I realize that Zhao Xiaoxiu was picking up and eating mutated plants. I was shocked, but afraid of scaring the child, I suppressed my nervousness and asked, "Did you get tested before you ate them?"

How come he doesn't remember Zhao Gang having an exchange detection device?
