Chapter 90 Eager to Return Home

The large trucks loaded with supplies carefully drove out of the bumpy roads of Jiangcheng, and an hour later, they finally arrived at a smooth highway.

"Let's go home!" Zhao Xiaoxiu's still childish voice came from the truck, full of joy.

The mercenaries, who had been away for half a month, were infected by the joy and all started to smile.

The three mercenaries, who claimed to be experienced drivers, were crammed into the driver's seat. While one was driving, the other two helped scout out the road conditions.

Meanwhile, the rest of Zhao Gang and his group, sitting on the supplies in the truck bed, were responsible for guarding against and dealing with the mutants who might suddenly launch an attack.

However, after the main force has been traveling back and forth on this road for the past two weeks, the mutated species have been basically dealt with.

With the temperature dropping, the growth rate of the mutated plants slowed down significantly, and many mutated animals were about to enter a dormant period, so the group did not encounter any danger along the way.

Holding her fully charged satellite phone, Zhao Xiaoxiu would check the time every now and then, mentally estimating how far she was from Taoyuan Base.

With four and a half hours already passed and only an hour or so until they reached Peach Blossom Base, Zhao Xiaoxiu's lips already curled into a smile.

Suddenly, a loud "bang" was heard. The truck traveling on the highway braked suddenly, and the tires screeched on the ground. The people sitting on the supplies instantly felt weightless and their bodies lurched forward uncontrollably.

Zhao Xiaoxiu was small and light, and before she could react, she was sent flying off the ground.

"Xiaoxiu!" the adults on the bus exclaimed in surprise.

Fortunately, a tentacle caught the little girl as she flew into the air and pulled her back safely.

The group, who were all dizzy and disoriented from the fall, breathed a sigh of relief and then unleashed a barrage of attacks on the three "veteran drivers" in the driver's seat.

"Muffled Cannon, what the hell are you three up to! If you want to kill me, just say so!"

The driver who was called out was the one who responded even more angrily, yelling, "Damn it, we had a flat tire! And this is the good tire you guys replaced!"

Did the tire blow out?

Inside the truck bed, Zhao Gang and the others looked at each other, realizing they couldn't really blame anyone but themselves for their bad luck.

"Luckily, there were two spare tires in the car. We quickly took them down and put them on. Now that we've been delayed, we don't know if we'll be able to get back to base before dark." Muffled Cannon jumped out of the car to check the tires, grumbling to himself.

As soon as they got out of the car, a group of people with green paint on their faces suddenly rushed down from the woods beside the road.

"Damn it! We've fallen into their trap!" Muffled Cannon's warning had barely left his mouth when gunshots rang out.

The men who were about to get off the truck froze, then immediately lay down.

Zhao Gang instinctively pulled Zhao Xiaoxiu into his arms and lay down with the others, using the supplies piled on the truck to avoid the bullets flying towards them.

A round of gunfire quickly subsided, and the footsteps of a dozen or so people approached rapidly. The people in the car exchanged glances, then suddenly stood up, raised their weapons, and launched a counterattack.

Having worked together so many times before, and with both the White Walkers and the mutants coming to attack, we've developed a certain level of understanding.

Zhao Gang lashed out his tentacles, knocking down a whole area.

The other party was shocked, clearly having never seen such evolutionary ability before, and became somewhat flustered.

The mercenaries immediately opened fire, and the situation instantly reversed.

Knowing she wasn't strong enough, Zhao Xiaoxiu decided not to cause trouble for the adults. She squatted in the middle of the supplies, holding a silenced pistol that had been reloaded, and fired two shots when she found an opportunity.

Both shots were accurate and hit their targets, stunning the mercenaries for a moment.

Then she turned to Zhao Gang and gave him a thumbs up, saying, "Our daughter is awesome!"

Zhao Gang had no interest in arguing with them. He jumped out of the car, swept his tentacles across the area, and dragged out all those who were hiding in the mountains and forests taking sniper shots.

The mercenaries took them down one by one with each shot, ending the battle in five minutes.

"What bad luck!" Muffled Cannon, who had narrowly escaped death, covered his bleeding ear and angrily punched the corpse that had hit him flat.

A punch from a human whose power has evolved can shatter brains. This can also be seen as another way to prevent the corpse from mutating.

The remaining people chopped off the heads of all the remaining green-faced corpses and dumped them by the roadside.

While everyone was still searching for the origins of these people, Zhao Gang had already secretly extracted all the information and said coldly:

"It was the Green Field Alliance. They were lying in wait on the road for returning mercenaries, planning to rob them of their supplies. Before us, two groups of people who returned overnight last night had already succeeded in their robbery."

Upon hearing Zhao Gang's words, the mercenaries didn't even consider how he obtained the information, and instead cursed him angrily:

"It's those shantytown residents again, they never seem to have a moment's peace!"

Zhao Gang walked back to the truck, smiled at the baby inside, took off the tire, and tossed it to Menpao and the others, telling them to change it quickly.

Everyone then came to their senses and quickly changed the tires, prioritizing their safe return to base.

With many hands making light work, the tire was changed quickly.

Unexpectedly, the engine malfunctioned again and wouldn't start.

Fortunately, the repairman's skills were quite good, and after a delay of nearly an hour, the truck was finally on the road.

Because of the appearance of the Green Wilderness Alliance, Zhao Gang and the other mercenaries strengthened their vigilance on the rest of the journey and finally arrived safely at the foot of the high wall of Peach Blossom Base.

The survivors at the base always worked together. The first thing they did upon arrival was to report what had happened on the way to the authorities so as to warn the mercenaries who were returning later.

After finishing this task, everyone unloaded their supplies from the truck and went home.

Nobody wanted the old truck, so everyone gave Zhao Gang a tank of gas and generously left the truck to the father and daughter.

After all, this beat-up car could break down on the road at any moment.

Zhao Xiaoxiu asked with great concern, "Dad, can we drive the car home?"

Zhao Gang bent down and leaned close to the cub's ear, his voice full of confidence: "Yes, I just learned how to fix cars."

You've learned it?

Zhao Xiaoxiu's eyes lit up as she recalled the dozen or so Green Wilderness Alliance members who had died, and she instantly understood.

The sky was getting dark. Zhao Xiaoxiu glanced at the time; it was five o'clock in the afternoon.

It gets dark early in winter, but there's still plenty of time.

The truck lights were unusable, and driving at night might be dangerous for others, but for the father and daughter, night was no different from day.

So, eager to get home, the father and daughter didn't even go into the bustling market inside the high walls. They immediately started the truck, turned around, and sped towards the planting area.

The road surface was not yet paved, and the ride was very bumpy, but the father and daughter were in high spirits because they were looking forward to going home.

The truck sped forward, and the sky gradually darkened.

There were no signs of human activity around, only the sound of trucks driving through the dense forest.

As they drove around a sharp bend, Zhao Xiaoxiu heard the sound of some animal jumping from the treetops into the truck bed.

The voice was very soft, and the person thought they hadn't been noticed by anyone.

But Zhao Gang's questioning gaze immediately turned to Zhao Xiaoxiu, "Is it a macaque?"

Zhao Xiaoxiu's eyes widened in surprise; it had actually come back with her!
