Chapter 25 A Bright Future

Shen Que told the others to wait.

But in reality, Zhao Xiaoxiu and her father waited less than three days before she received the results.

In the evening, the Meng brothers brought Zhao Gang and his daughter to the recycling station.

Shen Que, covered in blood and dust, walked towards the group after just returning to the base.

She gulped down a large mouthful of the cool boiled water that Granny Meng handed her, then pulled out two chip-embedded employee badges from her pocket and handed them to them.

"Put the chip into your points card, and you can go directly to the levitation plant tomorrow morning."

He left after saying that.

Granny Meng invited her to dinner, but she waved her hand and declined without turning around.

But it wouldn't be right not to treat the person to a meal after such a big favor, so Granny Meng planned to talk to her cousin, Chen Que's mother, directly.

The chip badge was only the size of a thumbnail, and it was engraved with the names of Zhao Gang and Meng Lao Er, Meng Qiu.

Meng Laoda's full name is Meng Xia. You can tell from the two brothers' names that they were chosen according to the season of their birth.

The three members of the Meng family had already discussed it. The eldest son, Meng, was more composed and reliable, making him a trustworthy choice for missions.

So the factory job was left to Meng Lao Er, who hadn't even finished junior high school and whose rebellious phase had dragged on until now, so that Grandma Meng wouldn't have to worry about him getting into trouble outside every day.

Meng Lao Er inserted the chip card into the points card, feeling happy even though he would never experience the thrilling life of a hunting team again.

But the factory offers good benefits, and once he makes a name for himself there, he can get his older brother a job there too.

Compared to Zhao Gang's indifferent expression, Zhao Xiaoxiu's happiness was obvious.

Holding his father's points card, he looked at the small chip engraved with Zhao Gang's name over and over again, as if he could see a bright future life through those two words.

The little guy's lips curled up, and his eyes sparkled.

Grandma Meng noticed that the little girl had gotten quite chubby after not seeing her much for a month.

Her smile is like that of a chubby baby in a New Year's painting; it's so delightful that I couldn't help but pick Zhao Xiaoxiu up and gently bounce her around for a while.

The Meng brothers have been mainly recovering from their injuries these past few days, while also helping their mother with some chores.

Zhao Gang arranged to meet the two at the factory the next morning, then took Zhao Xiaoxiu from Granny Meng's arms and went home first.

Granny Meng felt a sudden emptiness in her arms, and a piece of her heart felt empty as well.

Looking back at her two sons, if they were of normal marriageable and childbearing age, the eldest son should have been married and given her a big, healthy granddaughter long ago.

But in this day and age, having a child is not only difficult, but having a healthy child like Kosode is an even greater luxury.

"Sigh~" Granny Meng sighed deeply. Children these days suffer after birth, and it breaks my heart to think about it.

However, watching Zhao Gang and his daughter walk away, Grandma Meng felt a little comforted.

Now that Gangzi has a job in the factory, Xiaoxiu's life will definitely get better and better.

On the way back.

Zhao Gang, who had remained largely calm, muttered to himself:

“Meng Xia said that outstanding employees working in the factory have the opportunity to earn contribution points for the base. Once they accumulate enough contribution points, they can rent or buy a house in the core area and send you to kindergarten.”

Zhao Xiaoxiu immediately looked up at Zhao Gang and asked in surprise, "Can I go to kindergarten?"

Zhao Gang was momentarily blinded by the joy emanating from her, and nodded with a smile:

"Yes, after finishing kindergarten, you can go to primary school, just like other children in the core area."

Zhao Xiaoxiu originally thought that the days when she could no longer leave the base would be very boring.

She instantly perked up and exclaimed happily, "Dad is awesome!"

Zhao Gang scratched the back of his head and laughed along, his mouth stretched to its widest extent.

A person walking in front of the father and daughter glanced at them and their expression changed slightly; they were startled by the exaggerated smile.

Zhao Xiaoxiu didn't care about other people's eyes at all. She used her two small hands to push the corners of her mouth to the sides, and imitated Zhao Gang, stretching her mouth as wide as possible and laughing.

Passerby: "Are you crazy?"

Father and daughter: "Hehehe..."

That evening, Zhao Gang cut off half of a tentacle and fried it for Zhao Xiaoxiu.

With a full bowl of stewed pumpkin and half a bowl of tomato and cabbage salad, Zhao Xiaoxiu ate it all up.

It's a good thing Granny Meng wasn't here, otherwise she would have been shocked to see Zhao Xiaoxiu's current appetite.

Every time Zhao Xiaoxiu ate her father's tentacles, she would quickly become drowsy.

This time was no exception. Half asleep, Zhao Gang wiped her face and feet, and she climbed onto the bed covered with a soft quilt. Abeibei held her in her arms, pulled a corner of the quilt over her lower abdomen, and closed her eyes.

I can't fall asleep!

She gets incredibly excited just thinking about tomorrow.

"Dad, where's the phone?" Zhao Xiaoxiu asked lazily as she turned to face outwards.

After finishing his housework, Zhao Gang brought in the dry clothes that were hanging out to dry in the hallway, closed the bedroom door, folded the clothes, and then took out the satellite phone and brought it to his bedside.

Zhao Xiaoxiu moved further into the bed, her eyes darting around, her little hands patting the empty space expectantly, inviting her living father to lie down next to her.

Without hesitation, Zhao Gang jumped onto the bed, causing it to dent and almost bounce off Zhao Xiaoxiu.

The father and daughter were both stunned for a moment, staring at each other in disbelief, and burst out laughing at each other's blank expressions.

After laughing enough, Zhao Xiaoxiu turned on her phone, and the screen lit up.

The wallpaper is unremarkable, and the software has only a few basic functions.

Click on the music, and you'll find over forty cached music tracks, all of which were once popular hits.

Zhao Xiaoxiu randomly selected a song, and soft music filled the small room.

Zhao Xiaoxiu immediately turned her head to look at her living father.

Zhao Gang did not react in any particular way to the beautiful music.

Never mind, she can enjoy it herself!

Listening to the soft music, Zhao Xiaoxiu felt even less inclined to sleep. The fact that her cell phone represented modern technology and civilization made her realize for the first time that she was truly living in the apocalypse.

With no games on her phone, Zhao Xiaoxiu turned on the phone's flashlight out of boredom. The light shone on the ceiling, making her outstretched small hand appear as a large one.

"Dad, look at me." Zhao Xiaoxiu held her phone in one hand and made various hand gestures under the light with the other.

Zhao Gang followed her hand and looked up at the ceiling, where the shadows of various small animals kept changing.

The cubs beside her were having a great time, occasionally letting out a laugh.

The laughter faded away.

The shadow of the puppy on the ceiling suddenly twisted, and the phone slipped from the little hand, about to hit that tender little face.

A tentacle swiftly caught the phone and gently transported it to the pillow.

Before she completely lost consciousness, Zhao Xiaoxiu thought to herself, "Tomorrow is the first, I can collect the relief nutrition solution!"

Night was falling.

The area outside the base was quiet, with only the patrolling lighthouses occasionally sweeping across the area.

Rain started falling again, and the wind blew into the house through the cracks in the doors and windows. In the unfinished building, the coughs of people awakened by the cold wind in the middle of the night rose and fell.

Unbeknownst to the sleeping people, above the ruins, amidst the lightning and thunder in the clouds, a gigantic vortex was condensing, expanding, and taking shape!
