Zhao Gang, a tall and strong man with connections, jumped into the car, his long legs stepping over a pile of tattered luggage, and came to his cub's side.
He put down what he was holding, picked up the cub, and sat down.
A quick glance revealed a fierce glint in his eyes, and no one dared to covet the spot where the father and daughter sat.
After about ten minutes, the truck was full.
The guard in charge of driving was a soldier from Hope Base. He told everyone to sit tight and then started the truck.
The car drove off the paved road at Taoyuan Base and onto the newly opened dirt road.
Zhao Xiaoxiu and Zhao Gang had traveled this road once with the hunting team before, and only two days later, the road surface had been widened and repaired again.
Without hardening treatment, given the growth rate of the mutant plant, it would need to be pruned at least once a day.
There were two soldiers in the truck's passenger seat, one sitting inside and the other standing on the steps outside the door, holding onto the door with one hand, mainly responsible for guarding.
Looking at the bumpy dirt road, someone asked worriedly, "Is this road only for going there and never coming back?"
The soldier brushed aside the newly sprouted grass on the road and replied, "Once the cleared area is completely cleared and all the lords have moved in, the base will pave the road surface."
“Winter is coming soon, and the plants will enter a period of stagnation. As long as you don’t leave the safe zone of the territory, you should be fine,” the guard added, noticing the distrust and suspicion in the crowd.
The people on the truck breathed a sigh of relief.
Someone then asked, "So, once we get to the territory, how do we report any issues to the patrol team?"
The guard said, "Those with telephones can contact us by phone, or walkie-talkies will also work. The patrol teams take turns patrolling 24 hours a day, so there will always be someone on duty. If there is any situation, just shout, and the patrol team will come immediately."
That's what they say, but a single territory can be two or three hundred acres in size. Can the patrol team really hear you just by shouting?
Thinking about all the unknowns that lay ahead, the lords, who had just been happy after receiving their subsidies, gradually lost their spirits.
In contrast, Zhao Gang and his daughter, who were reading storybooks to their daughter to pass the time in the car, seemed as relaxed as if they were going on a picnic in the countryside.
The father and daughter chatted and laughed, answering each other's questions. Their good attitude only reinforced the speculation that they were related by connections and had someone protecting them.
"Hey!" The person next to them raised his hand, smiled, and greeted the father and daughter.
The father and daughter looked up and saw a sunny and cheerful young man who looked to be in his early twenties. His youthful eyes revealed a kind of optimistic naiveté.
Seeing the father and daughter looking over, he quickly introduced himself, "My name is Hao Ran, the lord of territory number 11 in area B. And you are?"
Zhao Gang stared at him for two seconds, making the young man feel uneasy, thinking he was about to explode, before suddenly speaking:
"Zhao Gang, this is my daughter, Zhao Xiaoxiu, apartment 13 in Block B. Do you need something?"
"You're from Zone B too!" Hao Ran clapped his hands excitedly. "We're from the same zone, so let's look out for each other in the future!"
The entire bus was drawn to his loud voice.
A burly man with yellow teeth rolled his eyes and sneered as he reminded him:
"We're all going to Zone B, kid. Don't just ask those two to look after you, I can help you out too..."
As she spoke, she reached out and quickly pinched Hao Ran's arm, which was exposed outside his short-sleeved T-shirt. "Look at how thin and flabby you are. You've never suffered any hardship, have you?"
Hao Ran felt uncomfortable with this person, but since the other person's attitude was quite good, he didn't want to be cold, so he nodded awkwardly.
Seeing that everyone was looking over, Hao Ran had a sudden inspiration and suggested:
"Since we're all from the same district, let's all call on each other if we need anything. Let's help each other out if we can, okay?"
There were seventeen people on the bus: six women and eleven men.
Most people agreed, since agreeing first would leave a good impression on everyone and wouldn't hurt.
There was only one young girl with a ponytail, sitting alone in the corner at the back of the car, holding a hunting rifle, her lips curling into a mocking smirk, without offering any response.
No one seemed to mind, and once the atmosphere broke down, they began to chat enthusiastically.
The burly man with yellow teeth introduced himself as Zhang Lijun, thirty-five years old, who had just retired from the army before the disaster struck.
From the moment the people on the bus introduced themselves to each other, he displayed the demeanor of a righteous elder brother, in control of the entire situation.
Now that everyone else had finished introducing themselves, Zhang Lijun turned his attention to Zhao Gang and his daughter, and asked them with a smile what they did for a living.
After several rounds of introductions, everyone on the bus revealed a bit about their skills.
Some people know how to repair cars and use heavy machinery.
Some people understand traditional Chinese medicine. Although plants have mutated now, techniques such as bandaging and bone setting are still sufficient for daily use.
Some people even claimed to be evolved humans, but they didn't show their specific abilities.
Zhang Lijun is a typical, power-type evolved human. However, he has a military background, and his strength is indeed outstanding.
There was a man and a woman in the car who were his friends; the three of them came together.
Of course, Zhang Lijun and the other two did not tell anyone this.
Zhao Xiaoxiu knew this because Zhao Gang told her in a low voice.
His sensory organs are different from those of humans; they are highly developed, capable of detecting even the smallest insects in the ground. Moreover, the secret flirtations between Zhang Lijun and the other two could not escape Zhao Gang's keen eye.
Under the probing gazes of Zhang Lijun and others, Zhao Gang raised his right hand, and the tip of his little finger transformed into a bloody streak.
"Brother Zhao, what evolutionary direction are you taking?"
Hao Ran watched in astonishment as the tentacles in Zhao Gang's hand stretched and shortened like small snakes, realizing that he was still too ignorant.
I've never seen such an evolved human before.
